Robert Fripp: Guitar
Adrian Belew: Guitar, Drums and Lead Vocal
Tony Levin: Bass, Stick, Synth and Vocal
Bill Bruford: Acoustic and Electric Drums and Percussions
Tony Levin has the same hairstyle since 80's
Oh, you funny....you funny. :)
Which hairstyle? Under the nose? ;-))))))
If you lost your hair early, after that, there´s no problem about styling anything....You just go as you look like...A handsome man and an incredibly skilled musician (and very intellectual). This counts.
But you should have seen it in the 70's! LOL.
He was born with it.
Highlights from Neal and Jack and Me
23:45 - obviously Adrian excited
24:03 - Fripp smiling
24:14 - Tony looking geeked
25:00 - Tony obviously looking guilty like he played the wrong note
25:43 - Bruford have a hell of a time
26:12 - Adrian knowing he’s got pipes
26:18 - No Sleep
26:31 - Levingasm
27:47 - Fripp solo
28:15 - Bruford smiling because it’s a bomb ass song
28:44 - Damn this jams
"Levingasm"...

Insightful!
2023: listening to this since almost 40 years, it seems impossible to achieve anything close to this. Not as a fan, but as somebody seeking the real difference. I am endlessly happy.
Thanks man, you nailed it!
The level of talent and number of musical artists these guys have played with is off the charts.
And this is coming from someone with a Zappa avatar. Very good choice of music my friend.
Unfortunately, it's not IN the charts hihi

Wouldn't have noticed until you pointed it out. Thanks.
I made a clock face out of the album cover of "Freak Out", Zappa's first album. Ever see him play bicycle spokes on the old Steve Allen show? Trip.
Robert Fripp looking at Adrian Belew feedbacking his guitar: "So cool. How does he do that?" I love this line-up of King Crimson. I was a young 19 year old man and full of energy and optimism. Miss those days.
For some reason, this comment really got to me. I'm happy in life but I understand that feeling of losing the optimism. At some point, you realise that you're not immortal, that the people you most love are going to die and that you're never going to see them again. Tough stuff.

Adrian Belew has this very playful and joyful stage presence while at the same time appearing to be slightly crazy. Quiet rare for a rock musician. I guess he has a great sense of nonsense humour, too.
Lovesit
I missed Adrian Belew's wild and exciting presence on the stage when I saw them on September 14, 2019.
The current singer murdered a few songs that Adrian owned.
I really was disappointed that neither Belew or Bruford were on this 50th anniversary tour.
Still loved the show.

@@katherinehunter9526 same fir me except 2017, but I was lucky enough to see him in a tiny venue in Vancouver a few years before with the E3 lineup. Amazing up close experience, a truly nice guy.
Considering he played with Bowie, Zappa, and Talking Heads, helped transform King Crimson into a new wave/prog rock hybrid, released a solo album entitled "Lone Rhino", and later formed a band called The Bears, I would say your assessment of his humor and zany antics is spot on.
I mean, he WAS part of Frank Zappa's band for a while. You got to have a sense of humor to play with Frank.
Love mr Belew, always looks ridiculously happy and can't blame him for that, what an amazing band, great music!
Drumming is so hard ...
Burford doesn't miss a millisecond , amazing.
One of the coolest bands ever. I wished they had kept this lineup for good. Best KC was in early 80s.
First time I saw Robert Fripp playing (from distance) I thought he was Dan Rather the newsman lol 😆
He had the same serious look as the anchorman! 👍
I've seen him lately he's still fantastic. They all are. 👍
I agree, having seen them in 78 and 82 I think, and stunned both times with different lineups!
2 of the best performances I've ever seen 🌛
Fripp is like a maniacal genius in the background steering the controlled chaos
Indeed, a Master
definitely!
Astute observation. And only one a tuned-in musician would recognize. It's no easy feat to direct a band as skillfully as Fripp does so ostensibly effortlessly. Fripp appears to be playing mechanically, but his ears are finely tuned to listen for the slightest variation of when to play a microsecond ahead or behind the beat. Not an easy thing for even highly skilled musicians to do.
You're a perceptive man with great taste in music.
"I can't be the only sane man in this asylum"

I completely agree.
I just saw King Crimson on their 50th anniversary tour in Toronto and it was good but I found myself missing Belew and Bruford for sure.
Hard to say if Fripp will ever bring them back.
It was still a fabulous night to remember.

People still visiting this gem of a band in concert after almost 40 years! Loving it.
Belew always looks to be having the best time of anyone in the house - a born entertainer filled with infectious fun!
Belew seemed to have the most fun with the audience. Bruford seemed to have the most fun with his instrument.
True. He Was Like that in His Brief time with Zappa as Well. He Was Awesome! Bruford Has a Fun Spirit As Well.
Adrian is a really fun and kind guy. Fripp, on the other hand.
Belew definitely enjoys performing. I don't think you can say the same thing about Fripp.
I met him last year when he was touring with Todd Rundgren for the David Bowie TRibute. I had a meet and greet and Todd laughed at me because I bowed down to Adrian. Todd knows I have great taste in music. I have a few really good photos of that amazing night. Adrian came in the bar at the hotel and wanted a White Russian. I guess they couldn't make him one. The next time I see him, I'm bringing him a huge thermos full. 🤪

4 heavyweights in framework of music having a jolly good time...all 4 are masters in their own right. Beyond words what Fripp and the entity that is King Crimson have accomplished and given us 🙏🙏🙏
Not only is Adian Belew an amazing guitar player but he also has a great unique voice.
And a really nice guy too
What he did with kg and Bowie is top music. Very innovative but melodic
His singing and voice is very very strong.
THE King Crimson..Wow.. Fripp..Belew..what a Great band. Nobody can deny it cannot be matched ..a league of their own..Love King Crimson forever..
Listening this on the bus on the way to high school. Watching the morning sun while listening to Levin's stick part in Waiting Man is just something else
Nice memories!
It’s what I keep coming back to. 💜
Seeing Tony Levin playing his stick, is a real pleasure for me.
Robert occasionally looks like he is actually enjoying himself!
Bruford is something else.
Truly one of the greatest to ever live
I am a Rush fan but also listen to other music including king Crimson with bruford in the band. Anyways Neil Peart is my number 1 drummer but Bruford comes number 2.( yes I have listened to bruford ( solo) and earthworks too). Yes Fripp, wetton, cross, below and Levin are also great too.

I am watching this in lockdown
Effortless genius in every sense of the word. Four musical maestros of the likes you won't witness again.
I was present at the Spring '82 stop at Toad's Place (New Haven, CT, USA) and stood, leaning on the stage right in front of these artists. How I wish I could replay that performance. Each musician had their own energy to enjoy with their music. Fripp playing "scientific guitar" while making otherworldly sounds in a tux is mind-blowing. Ah, the 80s...it shall never return, but thank God for UA-cam!
Adrian Belew is a student of Frank Zappa ... and that's all. So cute and gentle. I met him in Rome in 1980 during Talking Heads tour... Tony Levin is a monster of bass... nobody compares
The Miami Vice wardrobe department brought me here.
Yes - the fabulous "T-shirt under Armani jacket" - style - and the Crims predicted this style - largely attributed to Miami Vice - by a couple of years or more. Fripp however, was having none of it.
Repo division...
You sound like the sort of person who would insist on the sleeves on your funeral suit being rolled up to the elbow. I applaud you. ;)

saw them at cmu in '81 .. their present incarnation is coming to my town this fall (2024)
Great to see Bruford!!! Awesome drummer!!! 🥁🐐🦸♀️
Indiscipline really shows off truly what a phenomenal drummer Bill Bruford is
Agree best lineup of the band. They would and could do anything they wanted. Creativity off the charts. All 4 genius level artists and that’s undeniable
you will never lock eyes with adrian belew while playing a vdrum duet
Why do you have to hurt me in this way?
This is: the perfect concert with the perfect musicians and the perfect songs and arrangements. PERIOD! My favourite KC period of all!
This sounded like music of the future in the 80s. Still does. Even if the future ain't what it used to be
The future music is much suckier.
@@revwahfair putting it mildly.
@@revwahfair nah, just the mainstream music, but there are brillant bands in this exact moment, anyway, radiohead is amazing, try listening to their 3th and 4th albums and their last album who was made in 2016 "burn the witch" remembers me to this mention of king crimson
@@revwahfair I think if you think that you’re not paying much attention.
I've always admired the intense cooperation (and stamina) for playing rhythmic meshes like this. Fripp is very precise at playing patterns over a long period, as is Bruford.
I saw this act live, in Seattle during 1984. It was a wonderful night with many friends, great music, and so much playfulness and interconnection between performers and audience.
Tony Levin - half man, half bass
Can't agree.. He is half bass, quarter mustache and just a quarter of a man :)
Question is...do you mind NOT...being a Bass-Tor....(I do)
You could say he's a Stick Man
Banana fingers
Brilliant.
I freaking love this KC line up. What incredible musicians.
I recall seeing/hearing this version of KC at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. Me and my friend Bob got their early and got spots standing right in front of the electric drums. We were both SO blown away...we must have looked totally googley-eyed...one amazing moment after another trying to take as much in as possible...sometimes not being sure who to watch even though familiar with material. What a great band, what a great evening. The SOUND on this video is REALLY GOOD too, which is so NICE, for a CHANGE. Thanks ALL!!
Belew: Sweating to death, bouncing around and giving his all.
Fripp: Cool as a cucumber, not moving with that menacing grin, giving his all.
Levin/ Bruford: The pillars.
Fripp does a very bad job at pretending he is not into and loving it

OMG they're THE GODS OF MUSIC!
Tony Levin is my favorite bass player.
I absolutely adore this concert. Belew is mesmerizing here
Now, I am completely covered in goosebumps!
The year that this was recorded was when a wonderful drummer friend sat me down in his bedroom, a bedroom full of worn out drum heads, cracked sticks, and milk creates filled with albums. They played me In the Court of the Crimson King. I had only been listening to bands like Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Rush, and Led Zep before this moment. What an awakening it was to hear these exceptionally creative musical artists. 🌸🎶
Fripp's guitar playing in Sheltering Sky is seriously humbling. That's some magical badassery.
Agreed friend! Just blows me away, every time I hear it!
On fire. Another level of from the album - which was already seemed perfect.
Sean Landis totally agree with you
Incredible! Sounds like a Miles Davis and Mozart channeled through the guitar

Cant wait to get my Robert Fripp action Figure
Would you actually purchase one if they were available at, say £50 ? 😂
That includes a guitar 🎸 so don’t fret. 🙄😷😂
The only moving parts are the fingers.
With the Kung-Fu grip?
Now that was funny!!! 😂
Bruford is amazing in this lineup. Like thunder behind the kit
This is so awesome. It deserves to be in schools,so young people will have the opportunity to see how music is really made
If you feel this way, make it happen. I think it's a brilliant idea.
Pound for pound, this is the best Crimson lineup. Fripp put together a dream team in Bruford, Belew and Levin. I enjoy the other lineups for different reasons. But this lineup is perfect. there isn't anything they can't do.
+Kirk Slater Pound for pound? There's a lot of weight being thrown around up on that stage in this era, sure. But truly pound for pound has to go to Red-era trio.
I guess it's a hard call. Every lineup is rather substantial. But for me, this lineup is the most distinct tone while providing a wildly adventurous attitude. I'm a pretty big Crimson fan, so I couldn't really take a firm stance against any other opinion. I love the Red era too. I've got and enjoy all the albums. Haha
+Kirk Slater I think every era had good things to offer? The very start for me is unsurpassed but I like stuff from every album
exactly. this is the best Crimson

Wow. Sheltering Sky is on a whole nother level live. It never really spoke to me until seeing this amazing video. What a great upload. This album and Discipline have a special place for me. Musicianship in spades.
Got Adrian's autograph at a club a few months after this date. The man just lives and breathes music!
This lineup was so amazing. Exuding creativity, talent, and class. Each piece is a paradigm of musical unstable equilibrium. Pure genius.
Adrian set the tone for this version: bouncy, complex, and yet often goofy. And the members, including Mr. F seemed to be having actual fun. Takes three drummers to copy Bill Bruford.
Took a lot from David Byrne persona.
@@enkibumbu Yeah, possibly. But Adrian's an approachable guy, and is genuine in conversation. He played the club I worked at a few times in the 80s, and had the chance to speak with him then. Byrne, on the other hand, just seems like an actor to me.
You said: "Takes three drummers to copy Bill Bruford." I think this other performance with 3 drummers (and Belew not present, for worse) was ridiculous.
@@Romany1111 I think you're both right. Seems like Adrian expanded on what could be done after meeting Byrne - but he was also young so it could be growing more confident. Byrne was acting 100%. When you see videos of him before he was famous or in the last 10 years as his fame dimmed you see a man different from the "autistic and low self monitoring" man he played to the hilt.
These guys are unmatched in the class category. Outstanding.

Adrian Belew is reminiscent of David Byrne in his vocal style and sound. I almost expected to hear "Once In A Lifetime".

+The Mystic Maestro You said It!
Tony Levin is a long-time acquaintance of mine, and he's as genuine a person as you'll ever meet. We've been on the same stage together, playing bass, and he's light-years ahead of everyone on that instrument. He's doing things that other bassists haven't even thought of. We ran into each other several years ago, and he asked me if I was still playing bass. When I told him "No", he asked why. I told him "I've seen you and that's as good as it gets."
Really? My impression was not positive when he was doing a signing and greeting fans right after a show several years ago. Gave him the booklet for Peter Gabriel's Plays Live album (my favorite Levin performance). He looked at it and arrogantly said, "I don't even know what this IS." When he realized what it was, he gave a half hearted "Oh" Quite rude and unfriendly. I wished I hadn't bothered. Very disappointing.
@@chrisknowlton9460 sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I've never known an unkind moment with Tony. I have no excuse, but I guess I'd just chalk it up to a bad day. We all have them. He's always been great to me and our paths cross on a pretty irregular basis. Frankly, I'm surprised he's remembered me. I hope you might give him another chance and for now, just enjoy his talent.
Wow- I always imagined him as just the kindest and most understated guy, and it sounds like he is. I’m jealous that you are pals with him, though I’m sure that I’d probably find it overwhelming to be on a couch sharing a convo with him as well!!
Hi@@tunguskalumberjack9987thanks for the kind words. While Tony and I are acquainted, please don't think that we're great pals, sitting around shooting the breeze. He knows me when we meet, but we don't meet very often. I did get to chat with him at a local appearance in January, but with his schedule, meetings are few and far between. What I can tell you, is that he's very down-to-earth and approachable. I've seen some people complain that he blew them off, but I don't know the circumstances of the meeting, so I can't address them. I've always found him to be friendly (and believe it or not, a bit shy) and happy. I don't have to tell you about his talent, that always shines through. I don't know where you live, but if it's in the eastern U.S., watch for Tony and his brother Pete to appear in a little quartet called "The Levin Brothers". They usually play small venues with an intimate audience. It's more jazz/new age jazz-oriented and they're great. They even throw in "Sleepless" from King Crimson. They're very wide-ranged and enjoyable. The best part is that they tour in a van, just to keep themselves in touch with their past. So I hope I didn't give the wrong impression about our friendship. He's a great guy and a great talent and I try to see him whenever he's appearing near me. Best wishes and enjoy the music.
Paul Cuff sorry, I was writing a response to this just this morning and believed that I had sent it, but I now see it isn’t there. Anyway- what I had written was- No worries! I’ve had people misunderstand a passing reference to someone before as meaning more than I had intended, so I completely understand where you’re coming from. And I appreciate your honesty about it, especially in this world, where people love to make themselves appear more important because they have some connection, however small, to someone famous! And I REALLY have to thank you for the heads-up about where he performs, as I live on the East Coast, specifically I live in the Hartford Connecticut area, so knowing that someday I can see him play gives me a lot to look forward to. Thanks a lot, my friend- I really appreciate your message- I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.

So glad Fripp decamped to NYC and hung out with the the new wavers. That move set in motion something very special: this sublime music. Turns out that the key to 'progressive rock' was to leave 'prog rock' behind. ✌️

It could be that during that period of my life, I was in the best relationship I'd ever been in.

What a band of highly sophisticated and skilled musicians! Everyone of them absolutely perfect. Sometimes like a bit of "guitar gamelan". Sometimes quite romantic. And sometimes so heavy, that any hard metal band could hide. Great! And this happened in 1982! Incredible. Nothing special has developed since, except the electronics, but what about musicianship? We are poorer today than they where then.

It's King Crimson, so therefore, it's just SMOKIN! 💖
Saw this grouping in '83 at Mesa Amphitheater, in Az. Buford on his GIANT kit w/gongs & all - Belew on a tiny kid's first set, they battled it out n then switched kits & did it again! So much fun to see'em here. God, it's good to be alive!!! Thanx for the post, suddenly I'm 14 again!!! 💗
Seems like we're about the same age. I had no idea this music was happening then. Wish I did.
Qué obra maestra Sheltering sky! Y Bill Brufford ahí qué genio! La cara de Levin!! Está volando!! Amo esta música!!
Ttvmm mm y yes nkm mmm
Por fin "alguien" que menciona la sublime "Sheltering Sky", un verdadero mantra, posiblemente la canción más elevada de todos los tiempos, Bravo Susana!
Can't imagine a better lineup for a truly revolutionary music band! Unsurpassed! Knocked me down the first time I heard them!
Ah, the soundtrack of my teenage: Discipline album of 1981. Matte Kudasai is magic.Great performance!
Oledengamle they were perfect before! Crimson is ever evolving. They always did and they always will.
My favorite record by them - love Frame By Frame
jbognap you can’t really have a favorite. I guess I liked there beginning albums the best for a while, then I jumped to the 90’s shit and now the 80’s albums and frame by frame is just hitting me so hard in the face...... I’d say disciplined (extended) is their most consistent and musical rule obedient album and I love every second of every song on there. Arguments, agreements, banter, bicker, chatter, chit chat, conversation, dialog, diatribe, excitement, ELEPHANTS!!!
