    That cemetery reminds me of some of the old cemeteries I slept in when I was in my teens living on the streets! I'd always spend the next morning picking wildflowers for the grave I slept near to thank them for sharing their space & watching over me overnight!

    Some cold weather camping tips we've found helpful: 1.Take a hot water bottle to bed with you 2. Go to bed "warm" (drink a hot drink, do some squats before hopping into bed) 3. Wear fresh dry clothes to bed (new pair of socks too)4. If sleeping on an airbed, put a warm blanket over it (to insulate between you and your sleeping bag/bedding) 4. Wear a warm/comfy hat, I like to pull mine over my eyes in the morning to block light . Good luck, hope the nights warm up for you!

      Those are great tips. I learned early in my backpacking career to fill a Nalgene bottle with hot water and place it in the bottom of the sleeping bag. Be sure to put a sock on the bottle, though.

      Sounds about right. When it's cold I'm glad I live in the deep south. When it's blazing hot with humidity at or near full saturation I wish I lived up north. All I ask of anyone who comes here from up north is that they don't try to force people to change their ways on their account. We're generally good people until the bear gets poked.

    As someone who has spent a massive amount of time outdoors (SAR Field Leader) to stay warm at night, there are a few simple tricks. First of all, blankets are key, cotton is horrendous for any kind of warm retention, even layers. In an unheated van (therefore damp) there going to get damp feeling and draw all the heat right out of you. Wool blankets are the way to go, Pendleton Oregon woolen mills has great ones that are seconds that are cheaper. Hudson bay blankets are great to. Woolrich is pretty decent as well. Second of all pajamas that are warm really help, something like stanfields union suit can be used as both pajamas and base layers. A few luxuries include a wool mattress topper (frankenmuth woolen mills) and duvet. A hot water bottle at night is also a wonderful thing.

    The cemetery is in the woods like that because you used to bury your dead on the land you owned and nature grows. Long after the homes have fallen the cemetery remains. Scared history for sure.

    • @zophielparker
      @zophielparker 3 роки тому +2

    Look into getting a Camco Wave 3 or a Wave 6 heater. It's a catalytic heater. It runs off of propane, but produces less condensation than a Mr. Buddy. Plus, if I remember correctly it doesn't run with an open flame. Always want to have a carbon monoxide detector for safety measure. They are def on the pricier side of things, but it seems worth it.

    Just wanted to suggest you travel with a sleeping bag or quilt, so on those really cold nights you can bundle up better! The quilts are amazing because you can use them as a quilt OR a sleeping bag and boy are they comfy for any style of sleeper.

    I worked on the Shawnee NF in IL. Unlike public lands west of the Mississippi, those in the east had been in private hands. Many small homesteads with family cemeteries. Land proved poor for farming, so sold to the federal government. We had to be careful when coming across old homesteads to watch for old wells.

    Pretty cool seeing you so near where my family comes from (we're from ~40 miles northwest of Pikeville), deep in those "hollers," as they're called locally. Yes, hiking in that country without a body of water is very worthwhile in the winter, as the view from those mountain tops is so beautiful.
    Those lonely cemeteries are what's left of tiny communities and families that existed back in there 2-3-4 generations ago; basically they're all that's left, with recent graves being for people who wanted to be buried next to ancestors. LOTS of lost history in there! You'd be surprised, there's even graves on top of some of those mountains. Or so it is near where I come from.

    Short of an actual van heater, an auto-start for your van would take the pain out of getting out of bed to a cold interior. I had no permanent heat source in my ford camping van. I would set the van heater on high before going to bed. Before getting up, I would turn on the van with the remote starter. A simple start system can be installed for under $200. There are remote starters that are temperature activated and will periodically start your van during the night according to a set interior temperature.

    I'd love to start traveling in Europe again in my motorhome but all borders are closed with no end in sight as the politicians go bonkers with lockdowns and quarantining here. The best I can do is watch Hannah doing her thing. She should serve as an inspiration to all women, unattached to conventional social expectations.

    Have you thought about using a hot water bottle at night when it's cold? if you have access to a fire to heat it, the water stays hot for several hours. Here in Canada it is often used when camping.

    I used to work at Fort Knox as a contractor and I remember a story about Red River Gorge. There was a fire there, and someone, not sure where I got this story, he said he was in a tent and heard someone say please come you. Come out right away, and it was a ranger or officer. So he was scared at first but it turns out the guy was warning about the fire. He went back to that same spot the next day, and it was all burned out. That officer saved his life!
    Daniel Boone is a great national park. I have bitter sweet memories of Kentucky much like I have about all the places I have been. :)

    They have heated blankets/throws that plug into a small battery to at least get your bed warmed up. Or, try to get a wool blanket. Be safe.
