A WOMAN claims to be empowering people to express themselves freely, by dressing as a doll with a gothic twist. Jess Soares, known on social media as ‘Rotting Doll’, has been dressing as an alternative doll for over a year and a half. The 24-year-old from Rhode Island usually spends an hour and half getting ready each morning to fulfil her doll aesthetic. The routine consists of wearing coloured contacts, wigs and contouring her face with streaks of blue makeup.

Ugh people dont realize that this type of style and aesthetic was out before Melanie Martinez. I remember I had a book of different types of Japanese fashion from 2003 and this look was in it.
Yeah but Melanie Martinez is just a commonly known person with a doll type of aesthetic so people usually connect whatever they’re seeing with a thing they already know... I’m not sure if that makes sense but for example if you saw someone with a shirt that’s the same as your friends shirt you would automatically think “oh my friend has that shirt,” ya know?

I’ve always loved the look of these kind of styles, I love goth, pastel, Lolita, steampunk, alt and more but as a trans male it’s hard to dress how I want. However, after becoming obsessed with these videos I decided to pick out an outfit that I loved and wanted to wear for the first time and felt so much like myself :)

These lifestyles are so expensive. I can't even afford liquid eyeliner more than 2-3 times a year and she's just throwing it on her like nothing lol. These artists have enough money to pursue their self image... MOST people can't afford to be so free and artistically liberated. I love painting but can't afford to do it as much as I'd like.
you can buy decent liquid eyeliner for £1 in some places, it's not expensive to live like this. lots of people who do heavy makeup like this mostly use cheap eyeliner. i think people assume extreme fashion is expensive but you just need to know where to look.
I dress sorta like this and I’m broke. Tbh clothes like this can be super cheap on the internet and eyeliner can also be hella cheap depending on where it’s from

Can't buy cheap makeup because of eczema flare ups, unfortunately. Quality ingredients matters, which means higher price points and less makeup use. On top of that, when I say most people, I'm considering the bills and expenses of being an adult in society. For one, I have a child, student debt, and mounting bills so I have no money left over except for on rare occasions. Most people I know cannot afford a fun and fancy lifestyle (I live in Toronto Canada - the most expensive city in Canada, we all spend our money on rent/mortgages). I'm happy with my life, but watching these things makes me wonder whether these people have bills to pay or if they live perfectly comfortable (and therefore unrepresentative lives) because makeup and costumes add up. That's a fact. If she's happy, that's all the matters, but damn, if most people had the extra expenses to pursue their artistic spirit I can only imagine how incredibly colorful our society would be. She's very lucky to have the privilege to express herself.

She enjoys it, she puts a lot of effort into it, and it's not hurting anyone. She can easily put on "everyday" simple/glam makeup any day she wants, but she chooses to express herself in how she feels is necessary. If it gives her more confidence, and she's aware of what attention she will get, then let her be. Like I said, it's not like she has "Six-Nine" tattooed all over her face, her style can be changed whenever she may feel like it. Keep it up.
