- Simple hooks made from horseshoe nails are an old idea but one we haven't talked about here at Black Bear Forge. By starting with a repeatable material it is quick and easy to make small hooks as a production item.

Another great video thank you. I make slightly heavier hooks using 10 penny square masonry nails. Grab a box at the hardware store and give them a try. Keep up the great work. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.

What's nice about these is after flattening the head, you can twist them sitting on the couch watching TV. Making a jig would make it even easier and the product will be more consistent.
Hook of the week! Nice simple hooks. I did a whole bunch of miniature pot hangers for a jewelry display using this method. I used a torch though. The hooks held earrings rather than miniature potted plants.

When I started to watch this I thought you were going to do it the opposite way leaving the iconic head shape as the end of the hook and bending the nail to form the hole for the screw!

Easy quick projects are sometimes the best. Also a good introduction to the younger generations. My nephew's (6, 7, 11 and 16 years old) love making little things...and yes they all have safety glasses and gloves!

I had no idea horse shoe nails were even a thing but now that I know I can ask my uncle if he can part with some as he's a farrier. I'd love to give this a try. As always John great video and I look forward to the next.

That's a great idea for a simple hook, i'll bet they would look great on a wood mantle or in a kitchen to hang your pot holders or towels on.
On my way to my next deployment back into East Gippsland. Have downloaded this so I can watch it while I'm doing the ol' "hurry up and wait" routine. Some areas still don't have mobile phone coverage.

I just recently picked up a cheap small anvil and have been experimenting with regular nails and making little hooks. Flatening and bending them on the horn. Working on consistency. Nice to see a nail hook of the week :)
Only using a Coleman torch at this point. I need to make a small forge.
These hooks are some of my favorites to make. They sell great and can be sold cheaply. And I have a million of them because we have horses so that’s fun. I heat them and do it all at the anvil. I use two heats. One to flatten the head. Then I do any bends or twists. I need on the second heat using pliers.

I was just working on a project with horseshoe nail hooks! I made a nice back plate and the hooks and now I'm trying to figure out how to attach them to it lol. I was hoping your video was going to be a tad longer. I am a huge fan by the way. Lol

I did this as my first completed project! I made a set for my grilling utensils!
Hi John! I wondered if you would ever do these! Most people are amazed when they see these and don't believe it unless they see them made, especially when I demonstrate hammer control by doing these with a 3lb crosspeen hammer and do it all at the anvil. I also make a few as a limber up exercise before actual smithing and save them up as the local historical society has our club demo blacksmithing for pioneer school for the kids. On average I need to make a couple hundred as give aways.

This was the first project I did without help. Simple, but lots of basic skills to use/practice for the larger projects! Made mine for hanging necklaces. (Equestrian theme rack)
Neat little hooks, I could see screwing a dozen or so to a little strip of oak or ash that was charred as a necklace hanging rack. I think most women would consider that to be a nice little present.

Love your hook if the week John. Looking forward to some hooks that are useable tools. The ornamental hooks are awesome, beautiful, and good sellers. Yet I desire to see some hooks that are useable for work. A few suggestions, 1. A drag hook. The kind you hammer into a log and hook a chain to so you can drag it out of the woods. 2. A hoist hook both the hook with just an eye to put in a clasp and one with a swivel joint. 3. A tow hook, for when you need to pull something, like your zero turn lawnmower out of the mud with you're truck. Love the information inspiring videos. And a question? Though I love traditional blacksmithing, what are your opinions on induction forges?

That was great! I have never seen this and would make a great cup hook ( I use a mugs and regular hooks from the store doesn't fit very well).
Making hooks like these was one of the first things that I learned when I started blacksmithing along with making nails. Just a quick question was that a feather made of steel on the table I would love to see you make one of those

Thank you for your videos. What brand are the round nose pliers? When I look online, the ones I'm seeing look like they're lighter and for bead work. Your pair looks more 'stout'. ;-)
The smaller pair are Knipex, the larger ones don't have a name but come from Blacksmiths Depot.
Lovely hooks you make! I just gathered some rusty nails from some old barn wood. Would this project work with them?

Quick little money maker! Rivet them to a small scrap of steel and sell them as a key hook
Where do you buy round nose pliers? I live in Canada and all I can find is 6in for $190
Do you ever dress the face of your anvil? If so aprox. how often?
I think most people would know that those round nose pliers are almost the same as snap ring/tru arc pliers. Way buy two tools when one will work.
Walmart sells a little pair in the craft section as jewelry making pliers.
They work good for a few dollars. Harbour Freight probably has them as well
