I know Fortunate Son was anti war. Most of Fogerty's writing was about social and a lot of his songs were just good feel songs. Down On The Corner, Looking Out My Back Door, Born on The Bayou. A lot of people thought Run Through The Jungle was a war protest song , but actually was written about too many guns and violence in the US.
@@richardnelson2895 I don't think they had any "anti- war" songs. One verse in Fortunate Son? Just great music. Great voice. Feel good stuff is correct. I have all there albums. Their music gets put in some anti-war movies, because they were popular at the time Vietnam was going on. I think thats the association.
@Richard Nelson I did not interpret Fortunate Son as anti war (disclosure: I was a young boy in the 1970s in the US Midwest), didn’t know quite what to make of the lyrics, but over several decades I have come to interpret the song as pure, visceral, farm town street patriotism: a refutation of false political binaries “i ain’t no military son…I ain’t no fortunate son”, both of which can be viewed as polar extremes, and so the central theme of the song is “it ain’t me” (16x) that expresses the full color of the spectrum of US citizenry, as if to say “don’t put me in your easy boxes, I’ll be exactly who I want to be” - it’s a protest against winner-take-all, two-party dominance (on whatever issue you want to contemplate it)
As a kid listening to this on my Dad’s 8-track I thought he was singing “There’s a bathroom on the right “. I remember my Dad laughing so hard when he heard me singing it that way. I was around 5.
Nice to hear an old classic through the perspective of someone hearing it for the first time. Someone with a knowledge of music to boot. Nice analysis.
They have over 50 songs that range from great to awesome, all well worth reacting to. Be sure to find the full, longer versions because some were cut short for radio play and you always want to get the most CCR you can.
Congratulations on the wonderful news You really have alot going on. Stay focused Dani. God has his hands on you I sore you were a special person when I started watching you. Never stress. You don't need too. That's important for artists.. John Fogerty still rocking. When you get a chance, I know the list is long. I heard it through the grapevine is a great one, There version is long but it's so amazing. they have so many good ones. Born on the Bayou. His influences are similar to me. I know your very similar to me as an artist. Buck Owens, Elvis, Chuck Berry,, Hank Williams. Great reaction. You nailed it. I love Buck Owens. He was such amazing performer, singer, guitar player. An important inspiration that Fogerty saw in Buck Owenswas how he created a sound that paved the way for so many more... He met his kindred spirit who became his guitar player Don Rich. They knew what the other one was thinking at all times. Like he knew him his whole life they are so amazing together. Watch Buck and his band play Waiting in your welfare line and loves gonna live here. That's how you know what John Fogerty saw that blew his mind. He references Buck in the song looking out my back door in such a touching tribute. As an artist you will know what John saw.when you see them together you will understand. The sun came out in NYC earlier today.i wonder why..hmmm I got to think about that.🙄
Congratulations mate, on your engagement and a very Happy Birthday. That is such great news. This song is one of my favourite. John Fogarty has such a unique voice. No other band could’ve done it justice.Mighty song.Next time mate.👍🇦🇺🤪😁☮️❤️
Awesome! You've opened up a great new rabbit hole. I can name at least a dozen great CCR songs. Most of them are under 3 minutes long and in a similar style to this one (some are a bit different). I'd recommend "Up Around the Bend", "Green River", "Proud Mary" and "Suzie Q".
Like the Doors, CCR is the iconic music of the Vietnam war. You are right about the contrast between the upbeat music and the graveyard lyrics and that is why this is my favorite song of theirs. To get a clue to the madness of the context watch the Suzie Q scene out of Apocalypse Now which takes place just before a Bad Moon Rises. Susie Q is another big favorite of theirs and popular at Karaoke.Nice review. Congratulations!
CCR is one of the greatest bands of all time. They had the highest slugging percentage of any band, as nearly all of their songs are great/awesome/classic. You should react to all of them.
The thing I find most interesting about them is their music and lyrics make you they were originating from somewhere in the south when actually they were based in California. Since you're from NY you might be interested to know that the band performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival and was the first major act signed to appear there.
Their sound is swamp rock. Born on the Bayou, I heard it through the Grapevine and I put a Spell on You really shows John Fogertys grit. Been a huge fan of them since 68 with Suzie Q. Their in R & R Hall of Fame and sure deserve it. I hope you react to more of their great songs.
CONGRATS Dani on your engagement. I wish you all the very best. The first album I purchased as a teen (after many 45's) was the last album released by CCR. I always though this band was from Louisiana with their swamp rock but actually they were a jam band from California. Many of CCR songs were influenced by the Vietnam War and the current politics. I got to see John Fogerty in concert around 15 years ago. Always a pleasure to be able to sing along with every song during a concert, so Dani that tells you there are many other songs to listen to by CCR or John Fogerty after they split up. One of my faves is Have You Ever Seen the Rain and I just found an official music video from 2018 with 83M views.
Oh and happy birthday to a fellow Aquarian. Kinda not surprised, there are a number of youtubers born around now and if you put their channels together you'd see lots of interesting things and opinions.
What’s funny is that when many people thought the third to last “There’s a bad moon on the rise” sounds like “There’s a bathroom on the right” and John Fogerty heard about that misheard lyric, he decided to include that into the song whenever he’s performing it live
My favorite song is Bad Moon rising. I used to listen to in college me my friend would get off work. We'd always drive by graveyard at midnight going home from work and bad moon rising would always play in my cassette player. My best friend told me said you time it for that song to play when we drive by this graveyard. I told him no I just like the song. One evening he borrowed my car to take a girl on a date. He went by that graveyard. his favorite band was the police. He had put his cassette into the player in the car. And on the way driving home passing that graveyard at night Bad Moon rising played. He told me said my car was haunted. He said he put his cassette into the player and my damn song played at that graveyard. He inadvertently put his sit on top of mine. But the interesting part was the fact Bad Moon rising played at the graveyard at that timing. I told him I like the song that it just happens to play. To me I was depressed back then. I used to think about ending my life. I used to think about how things were. Sometimes I didn't care if I lived or died. I had stuff from people long time ago still hiding stuff today.
CCR is the biggest and most prolific group to ever come out of the US! You're about to fall into the biggest rabbit hole you could find, and they have so many amazing songs. The thing I like is that many of their best songs are their more obscure ones. They don't have any weak songs. Try 'Ramble Tamble', 'Cross Tie Walker', and 'Effigy' to start. 'Keep on Chooglin' is a real rocker, too.
Dani, I grew up listening to CCR.back in the late 60’s early 70’s they were right up there with the Beetles. John Fogerty has a very unique voice and sound. That was pretty typical of CCR. I think they are usually called "Swamp" music which as you said it's roots music and a little country, a little rock and a little blues IMO. They had loads and loads of hit in the late 60s and John Fogerty the singer is now on his own and he sounds pretty good today even in his 70s (I am guessing he is in his mid to late 70s). They are worth exploring more. They were during the Vietnam War so they have a lot of songs influenced by the war and other events of that era. Great band.
John Fogerty said he wrote his songs with two fundamental objectives to be mostly entertaining, but with thought provoking seeds planted in the song ~ part of the challenge to understand the hidden references ~ you pretty much had to have grown up in those times to catch the double meaning

Most of CCRs songs were influenced by the Vietnam War and social unrest in America. That's the key to understanding their music.

One of the best bands that ever was. Love your reactions.
Nice to hear an old classic through the perspective of someone hearing it for the first time. Someone with a knowledge of music to boot. Nice analysis.
I think CCR followed the tradition of old blues songs that sometimes had a dark theme. Like the old guy who sold his soul at the crossroads.
They have over 50 songs that range from great to awesome, all well worth reacting to. Be sure to find the full, longer versions because some were cut short for radio play and you always want to get the most CCR you can.
