- This has been one of the most enjoyable covers I've ever had to learn. A personal favourite of mine ever since I left my old iPod Mini play on shuffle and it came on randomly and I fell in love with it immediately. I always had it in my head to do but always felt it would be a nightmare to decipher with all the riff fill variations that Steve Vai would do. However, after going out jogging a couple of times with it on repeat to ingrain it in my head, I had so much fun trying to pick out all the different parts. Even getting joy from being as pedantic as thinking 'I hear an open string here, I therefore need to completely change the way I play that riff to incorporate it' haha.
Recording it and getting it all together was a challenge but again I think I find it fun when there's always something going on to keep you on your toes. I certainly think there's a few notes here and there I have either missed or don't quite play the same way as Steve would, however, this is the best way for my style I feel. The solo shape for the tapping part took forever to find a comfortable way and after a few sessions of sticking the UA-cam video on 50% playback speed, I got into the groove of how I think it goes.

I use a Jackson Dk2 Dinky (I took out the tone knob and moved the volume over), into a Boss Me50 for all my tones, into a Palmer Pdi-09 speaker sim (to simulate an amp), into a Focusrite Scarlet interface, into Logic Pro X where I mix it with the track using some reverb and EQ.

I love the fact that Steve Vai took a small but significant part in Whitesnake history. Especially in this track.

Played with passion and a heart
I dont understand how you can be so accurate. It is a mystery to me. When I try to extract a song by ear, I always miss lot of nuances, and everything becomes a simple power chord. If you could teach how to extract all notes and weird chords, I suspect people would pay to learn that. I would.
Thanks! I think I’ve benefited from initially learning Def Leppard. Steve Clark used a lot of different chords that helped build my ‘vocabulary’. But also, the more you learn songs, the more experience you get in hearing certain things and that makes it easier over time.

This is absolutely great since most of the folks playing this aren't playing very accurate versions of solo. Heck, the underlying melody under the taping portion @ the 16 fret in the solo is executed very nicely! A bit cleaner and more articulate that even Vai's version on the album when you slow them down to compare. Well done!

This is one of the songs where all these Steve Vai "decorations" really adds something. I can imagine it if Vandenberg would have played all the parts, it would probably not be as interesting.

A difficult song, great job! All this Steve Vai work! Though my fav Whitesnake album is s/t 1987 with Johnny Sykes on the guitar (from Blue Murder and Tygers of Pan Tang) this song is the best and my fav from Slip of the Tongue album with Vai on the guitar.

Very cool. I have a reverse headstock 90 or 91 Charvel preditor with a crackle finish I love. It has a schaller trem from the factory that I am considering replacing because the small E won't stay in tune. I need to check some other things first, but may replace it with a gotoh 1996T floyd. If it will fit, otherwise I'll have to break down and buy an original german floyd I guess, but it's worth it. Those necks are the best to me. Just love them.
