I really like the transparency, and ability to push, pull, and remove the colors until you get what you want. Seems like a really forgiving way to practice mini painting.
Also, I just recently discovered that jetpens sells metallic and pearlescent watercolors that come in little palette sets. They are a bit spendy but might be worth trying out. I bet mica powder pigments would work nicely too, blended into a guache wash.
Great video... I've heard that mineral spirit joke before... I like the experimentation with other mediums. Good job mate
Thanks m8, I tend to need to say the same jokes over and over to get any sort of reaction... Usually it's a sigh
Also, there are metallic watercolors and gouache! I use primarily watercolors for painting and have been looking into painting minis (as I got a board game with minis in it for Christmas). There are many different brands for metallic watercolors. The brand I use is Komorebi. A lot of people like the Coliro (I think that’s how it’s spelled), but they can’t get quite as opaque as the Komorebi from my experience. Since the Komorebi metallic watercolors can be quite transparent or quite opaque, I highly recommend them. The set I have includes a silver, white gold, antique gold, copper, rose gold, and bronze.
Watercolour is my main "traditional" painting medium and i was thinking it might be interesting to use on minies. I looked it up and you seem to be the only person currently with a video on this very neach subject. Props to you 👍
Came here from Bill’s channel, and since I’m usually a watercolourist (and gouachist?) and have a gigantic stock of them, I’m glad to see someone trying them on minis. I haven’t tried since having bad luck on a first attempt over a watercolour ground, but I keep meaning to try again. I’m really enjoying the humour of your vids and really envying your paint racks. 😄
Thank you, welcome!
G) More gouache videos because they have a lot of potential
I second this^
I have had a gouache set for over 12months & this has given me ideas to try them out. Thanks for the video it was highly informative.
Glad ya liked it, best of luck with em!
This is nice man. Glad I found the Channel in your early days. Keep up the good work
Aye thanks, I appreciate the kind words =]
I'm so glad I found this channel (came here from reddit)! The production value is excellent for such a small channel, and the content is great and novel. You're gonna blow up some day! Keep it up!
Welcome! Glad to have you here =] and thanks for the kind words =D
As someone who lives in a flat with no garden and a partner with asthma I'm very excited to try the wash method at some point (white spirit and enclosed spaces do not mix well, so oil paints can't be played with until we move somewhere where I can do it outside or in a shed).
Will need to wait quite some time before I can justify purchasing yet another set of paints but I can definitely see potential :)
You can paint with oils without toxins: using just linseed oil or walnut oil or similat non-toxic thing as paint thinner. Smelly as oil, but not toxic to my knowledge. Have to sacrifice work speed and some painting durability stuff and such tho.
I'm primarily a gouache painter who wants to get into painting minis, but I hate using acrylic so I was hoping I could use something else. This is really promising, so I want to try it! All the things you described as "weird" or needing to get used to are already parts of painting that I'm used to, so perhaps it'll be fine.
same. painting only gouache. want to paint the minis of my first ever board game. would be great if this way I can avoid buying another paint type.
on a side note, the sound of the video is unfortunately horribly edited. not being a native english speaker, I miss so many things he's saying because of the loud music and very quite speech especially at lower tones
I hope you enjoy it Nefarious!
Yea, I've gotten better with sound since then gvngnr =] lots to learn when first starting a channel
When I first started a few months ago with minis. I was actually using my water colors to enhance my acrylics and loved it.. I'm so happy to see this as I never stopped with the watercolors 😅 and probably never will.
Bro your video is high quality how don’t you have 500k yet?!!!
Wish I did haha ¯\_ʘ‿ʘ_/¯
Fact. Quality is easy waaay advice YT average!
This is really cool--I never would have thought to use gouache or watercolors on a mini (or terrain, for that matter). Glad I saw your post on Reddit and ended up here--gonna subscribe for sure!
To your survey: B or D would be fun.
Glad you found the channel - welcome! And thanks for voting =]
uh wow, have to give this a try. very unique style in the end. thx for the inspiration! subed so cya^^
Don't know if I missed it, but you'll get much much better results if you use watercolor grounds for the basing. Surprised the colors stuck at all. But happy to find this video! Got tons of watercolor and guoache paints and just got into miniatures!
What are water color grounds?
@@CCMinis they are a lot like gesso in acrylic but for watercolor. They allow you to paint watercolors on non water color surfaces. For instance you can put water color grounds on glass or metal and use normal water color techniques. It's pretty cool stuff.
An example is the Daniel Smith watercolor ground, but that is so thick that I’d not want to use it on a miniature in worry that all the details would be lost. Instead, I would suggest a spray type of base, such as Mr. Super Clear (the UV cut one is especially nice), which is commonly used in painting dolls and other kinds of toys and collector’s items. The spray is quite toxic though, so it’s recommended to spray outside and to wear a good respirator mask, not a normal N95 or cloth mask.
If you want to see examples of how it works, I’d recommend checking out Dollightful’s channel. She has a great beginner’s guide which showcases it. Or you could check out any video of her’s and watch the segments where she is painting and drawing the face. (She mostly uses watercolor pencils, but will sometimes finish with acrylic paints or gouache, though I’d say gouache and watercolor work just as well).
Hope this helps!
I'm gonna have to experiment! I only ever get use out of gouache in the summer when I'm out plein air painting, the rest of the year its neglected, thanks for this!
Let me know how it goes! I haven't been plein air painting in ages. I should give that a go since it's nice out again =]
@@CCMinis Yeah I plan on doing it for my channel, add some fantasy ruins into landscapes and what not. Oh and by the way B. Steampunk Hobbits!
@@GhoblinCrafts very nice! I'll have to keep an eye out - and thanks for voting! Looks like steam punk Hobbits are going to be on the menu so far
@@CCMinis Wait, you're gonna eat them!? I thought you were gonna paint them... I change my mind, not into the eating of Hobbits...
@@GhoblinCrafts their tiny legs are scrumptious
I was pleasantly surprised by this video. I'll definitely try this out in the future.
I think chaos daemons could look really cool with this method.
Really glad you enjoyed the video. Daemons would be perfect, any organic forms really would work well - fur, skin, furry skin, ect.
It creates a look similar to pieces that are primarily done in contrast paints, but with the benefit of more easily being able to remove the layers similar to oils. You do trade off some of the color saturation and natural flow quality of a contrast paint though, and the lasting blendability of oils without removing much paint. So it could have a niche falling right in-between oil washes and contrast paints.
Absolutely! And water colors have their own special niche as removeable glazes, which is pretty neat
Man ! I just bought some gouache (mostly out of boredom in vacation). And I was looking for a fun way to use it on a mini. You did my day. Thanx !
Best of luck with it! It's really fun stuff =]
That cat was epic
I was looking at my gouache set the other day thinking about this, this is epic
As Bill might say, “worked it in….like your dad.” Another great one. I played with just water color in the past. Might have to try this.
Give it a shot m8, it's fun stuff
I inadvertently grabbed gouache at the store. Like reaching in a bag for a blue pen and pulling out a black one. I had to look up what it was at home. But I started painting a mini with it and I loved it. I'm not great with making acrylic look the way I want it to look, but I got really excited when I had made some progress with the gouache. It's good to know I can seal in the layers.
Hi! First of all your videos are a great inspiration. Usually I'm watching/listening while crafting something. I'm in love with the gouache especially washes and glad that I originally stumbled on your video related to the topic. Gouache changed my life. I have a small question how do you seal the layers if using multiple washes? In the video you used a brush and some varnish? I have used brush and some acrylic waterproof lacquer for that. But for more complicated builds I've been thinking is there any varnish/lacquer that could be applied with airbrush to seal the wash before adding a possible second layer?
Yup! I've had great luck with using army painter Matt varnish to lock in layers
Thank you for sharing this, please stay safe.
great channel, only video I could find on painting gouache on mini's as well.
Hello, I'm a newbie in this and have a question. How can you paint the whole model with watercolor, since the model's material is hydrophobic and not absorbent? I tried painting with watercolor and the paint merely beads up on the surface.
Awesome video, btw.
Make sure the undercoat is very matte, so it has enough tooth for the paint to cling onto, and make sure you do not have too much paint on your brush. If the surface is matte any beading is likely due to having the paint flow off of the brush too quickly - to combat that I dab my brush on a paper towel before application and wait for the previous layer to be completely dry
Waw this looks amazing, kind of like oils but without the faff of dealing with white spirits. I'm definitely going to have to give this a go!
There is a question - do matt varnish completely seals watercolor or not. What kind of ratio(and thinner) for airbrush you have used, mate?
Not sure if it seals all the way, but I've never had an issue with old paint coming up after sealing it in
Would you say that these differ in any other way than smell from oil washes? I mean, is there anything they actually do better? Or do they work the same, just with another medium (water instead of white spirit)?
They aren't better or worse then oil washes, just different. They flow differently if that makes sense - there is a bit more surface tension than working with oils.
Mate: absolutely loved watching this, really interesting, I had been wondering about Gouche and now I don't need to. cheers
Glad you enjoyed the video! Let me know if you give gouache a shot, I'd love to see what other people do with em =]
@@CCMinis I will mate, have a few projects to get out of the way first but then I will have a play. Likely make a video out of it and I'll send you a link :) Oh and B SteamPunk Hobbits
@@RisingApe looking forward to it, and thanks for voting!
Steampunk Hobbits sound so much fun.
Also, this video is fascinating and entertaining. I had never even heard of gouache before.
Also also, just so you know, the background music was a little loud in places, especially towards the beginning. I found it was fighting with your voice for the foreground for a while while you were introducing the paints.
Thanks for voting! And good! Glad you liked it, give gouache a try - it's very fun stuff
Just finally got to play DND about year ago now and am now going to try painting my own mini for our campaign, however the only paint I own and always use is Gouache so this video was super helpful thank you, I now don't have to buy some other paints instead and can save my money , could you just tell me the matt sealer you used in this as a lot of sealers are water based and will reactivate the paint so I'd love to know what you used?.
I used vallejo matt varnish - it is water based and may reactivate the paint a bit, but as long as it doesn't pool up or get moved around it shouldn't be an issue
@@CCMinis Okay thank you for letting me know, I'll consider this then. was looking at an acrylic varnish but saw they might be toxic and i'd need protection.
@@nicoleviper4090 Definitely wear a mask when applying a varnish via an airbrush or rattle can!

Oh but there are metallic water colour and gouaches .. this is wonderful to see. Thank you for your video.
I'll have to check those out!
I think you just unlocked a better form of speed painting to a higher than tabletop level. Combining this with a few other traditional methods could produce some amazing results quickly. Although varnish will get more expensive 😅. I propose we refer to it as "Gouacher or Gouaching"
“They know what they did.” LOL
I really want to try this!
That sphinx is so rad 🎉
Funny and informative!
Gouache wash!
Woo wooo!
Wait its not pronounced gooch?!!
Warcry Vaporwave band sounds cool
Growing up in Portugal in the 80s, gouache was the default paint for kids... Even later on in high school it's what we used when learning colour theory in art class. It's cheap, washable and has better coverage than regular watercolour (the other paints kids used). I'm always confused when people don't know what it is...
Great video, super helpful! Is there a specific matt varnish that you'd recommend? :))
I've had a lot of luck with army painter dull coat
Great video. Have you used those Liquitex acrylic gouaches on minis? I just brought their soft body acrylic kit, excited to see how it works.
I have used them - buuut if you want to see them in action there is a great NJM video titled "How to MIX colors and SKETCH - Limited palette" where he uses them extensively
@@CCMinis awesome thanks for letting me know!
So I ended up wth some gouache weathering paint after failing to find oil paint at all three of my favorite hobby stores. Do I need to applty clear coat on an acrylic base color before weathering with water-based gouache?
Only if the acrylic paint is too glossy for the gouache to adhere to
I know this is an old video, but for the Sphinx, did you prime it with Acrylic before starting in on it with Gauche?
Yup! Acrylic primer via the airbrush
Scratch built orks sound awesome! But then again so do steampunk hobbits. Whatever you end up doing I can't wait to watch it!
Thanks for voting! Honestly there is a good chance that I would build the hobbits to count as orks lol, we'll see tho!

Sir i could watch u just talk and I would had a great time lol. U are so cool! Excellent amazing miniature painting! I want to do the same with somw miniatures of gloomhaven. I have only gouache. Some ppl say acrylics are better. What u believe. With what Medium i would have a better result! I can see with gouache u can do some amazing shadows and cheats with colour. But its not permanent and maybe will wash out! What i suggest me for better results. I have to say also i am begginer on miniature painting but on on painting general!
Ty in advance sir
Overall I think acrylics are the way to go. Water color and gouache are great, but very niche and situational - for beginner videos I highly checking out some of the content that Goobertown and Miniac have made for beginners!

I have actually been trying to find a way to do a white recess wash for a long time and have found the process generally confounding. I'm going to have to try gouache I guess?
What primer did you use for the goauche?
These were all vallejo airbrush primer, but anything matte should do the trick

Matt varnish to lock in place = Mod Podge?
Nope, that could mess with the texture. I use matte varnish through and airbursh

What if you mix acrylic medium in the water?
Acrylic medium dissolves into water much like any acrylic paint would - its basically paint with out any pigments
@@CCMinis I mean the water you're mixing with the water paints. Does it just act like acrylic paint or retain some water paint properties
@@kevinishki I actually have not tried that yet, I've always been worried that adding acrylic mediums in would cause the paint to dry permanently - but I have not tested it yet

The background music is way too loud. It’s hard to hear what you’re saying
Why would anyone use oil paints after seeing this?
So oils do what gouache does, but does a better job slipping into the cracks - gouache is just a safe, not quite as good alternative =] I use it so I have less harmful chemicals in the same house as a toddler
@@CCMinis yeah I was thinking the same thing about chemicals. I picked some gouache and Windsor Newton water paint up and yeah I see what you mean about not going to crevices very well. Was going to look up or ask you how to improve that. Flow improver didn't seem to help.
@@kevinishki yea so I basically get the gouache to go on nice and thick before letting it all dry, then reactivate it and pull the pigments off of raised surfaces, this will typically leave just the pigments in the crevasses
this is a necro. how the hell have I never known this?
I want to be completely clear and on the record that CC Minis does not, and never has, promoted the use of necromancy, or any of its subsequent magical alignments
