My Grandpa was wounded at Vimy Ridge. He was in the front lines. He never talked about his war experiences.

My grandfather fought with Canadian Army infantry in northern France throughout WWI. He survived four gas attacks and was wounded twice by shellfire, each time being hospitalized then returning to the front lines. He was a Company Sergeant Major by the time the months of preparations began for the battle that pushed the Germans off of Vimy Ridge and the battles that followed. He survived the war, returned to Canada and married his teenage sweetheart. They raised six children, in Winnipeg and Edmonton, from the end of WWI through the terrible years of the "Dirty Thirties." He died a few days before his 99th birthday. A slight, quiet man, he rarely mentioned his own wartime experiences, but always had high praise for the bravery, tenacity and skill of his comrades, the soldiers he led and fought beside. He would be pleased and honoured to know that Canadian soldiers, both those who died and those who survived, are remembered in this way more than 100 years later. Thank you - Merci - to these citizens of France.

I thank the residents for remembering those who fought and died at Vimy Ridge. My 3rd cousin is remembered at a nearby war memorial called Zivy Crater.

what a honour for you to have your piece of music and lyrics be chosen to be performed at The Vimy Ridge memorial, you have only to listen to it to immediately know why it was selected. Congratulations

It's chilling to visit this region. I wish everyone went there and really absorbed the evil that is war. 😐

I wonder If I would be welcome. I served in the Canadian armed forces but was born in Germany to German parents. Just wondering.

I have German ancestry along with almost the entire British Isles and the Netherlands. I wonder what the Germans would have thought had they captured my Great Uncle Private Zimmerman of the CEF. It's you and your service that counts.

My friend. It matters not where you come from or what those before you may or may nor have done. They accept all Canadians. And to be Canadian is to live not by the trying to be the past or recreating it. But by embracing it and having the ability to move on without forgetting.
So long as you can do that. You are Canadian. And that all that's relevant.
