Thank you so much!! This is the most useful video for me to enhance my drawing skill! I love how you explain each details and personally your soft voice calms my mind and relax too.
I love the way you teach and show how to draw with accuracy yet keep your artistic signature on a drawing. Yours was more expressive and has depths of emotions than the reference. Love this, thanks for the learnings and the awesome work.
I love your work. You're a brilliant artist and a brilliant teacher! I love the way you talk us though your thought processes, it's so informative and illuminating. God bless you!
May God bless you and bestow upon you his what you wish for yourself and your family. You and you teaching is brilliance itself. The young lady in the portrait of seemed combatant but in your drawing her features softened I think because your inner feelings reflected in the drawing... amazing you are 🌷
You're an awesome, teacher! In another of your videos on charcoal drawing you recommended the use of brushes to move lines around & adjust or even out a value shape. Why aren't you using brushes on this toothed watercolor paper? So grateful for your videos! Im improving bh leaps & bounds!
Wow your art is Amazing I love the way you have the reference photo on camera a lot of Artist on UTube don't do that Thank you for doing that & sharing & teaching Thank you🎨❤Take care
Beyond amazing... Thank you for the great detailed demo, I specially appreciate the section on how to tackle corrections during the process...you kept it realistic and relatable .... Thank you
+emma Al Thanks, it's always better to show the actual process, with its hits and misses, rather than pretended no mistakes were made. Thanks for the support !
Man I just love how you did this drawing and your wise counsel, please I would love to get more personal info on how to be a better charcoal artist. Thanks
Excellent tutorial, you did a great job and explained everything important here! Looking forward to see more process/tutorial videos from you. Just great!
Your artistic ability to draw this portrait is awesome! Such detail and concentration in your drawing! I really got concerned about the left eye, when you had to move a few things around, but you managed to correct the small details and the finished portrait is just beautiful 🙂🙂🙂
I agree with the likeness of a drawing, and interpreting what you perceive the drawing to be. It's sometimes hard giving an actual likeness of someone due to this reason.
Perfect facial symmetry is a indicator of beauty. Most faces are not perfectly symmetrical though. Should I strive for perfect symmetry, or make each side slightly different. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.
Good question, but I think you kinda answered it. No one is perfectly symmetrical. Loosen up a little and go with what feels right in the moment. I feel 3/4 view kinda takes some of this worry out of it too.
Great drawing Florent, thanks very much for sharing. Note: I was expecting an explanation about measurement and placement of the left eye in the shadow, a challenge yourself warned us about : ) À propos, super canal!!
Thank you ! No, I didn't use measurement for the eye. This is why I got it wrong the first time. There is no trick or measuring tool accurate enough... you have to look for mistakes and go back on forth between the model and your drawing.
imagine the pencil or charcoal dry media like this powder like substance and in order to smooth it out you use your finger to smudge this powder substance to smooth it out, use the pencil to start shading it back and forth gently till you cant see the stroke, or use a tissue to rub the area you wish to blend.
What if the whole face is shorter than it should be? Should I erase the chin? What if I have drawn all the features then I discover it? Do I have to erase every feature or draw a new one? One more question. Do you check the proportion by experience? Or you use some tools? My greatest problem is getting the proportion of the face right at the beginning!
+jieyi liang Hi ! I made a demo on how to find proportions accurately ua-cam.com/video/OxWNzQmg5Ac/v-deo.html As you can see, I spend a lot of time checking my proportions at the beginning so that I avoid to find something is wrong later on. Sometimes it can be repaired, sometimes it can't. Take a lot of time checking at the beginning : hold your pencil in front of you. If you want you can use other types of measuring tools. With times, your eyes will see proportions better.
No, you have to keep everything as geometric as possible for as long as possible. The curve is only done by polihing angles between two straight lines basically...
Great video, lots of tips(subscribes to them now), going to help me figure out my charcoal learnings. Thanks for them :) I wanted to know how different is the ink wash with a water colour wash. Have tried to wash the sheet with both earlier but the couldn't make the layer count(maybe my inexperience with the technique there).
What type of charcoal are you using? No matter how sharp I get mine, the end result looks like a 5-year-old's crayons. Also, where do you get your reference?
+Endigo Rae TV Thank you so much. Let me think... I think I increased speed x4 in the video so I would say approximately 2 hours. Maybe 3 if you count the time off camera
He pretty much said "it's not about copying exactly, though I do take issue with that a little because his interpretation is more or less copying a photo with a physical medium. The 'not copying' part ought to be expressive rather than observable inaccuracy. To my mind this is the whole issue with copying from photos or striving for photographic facsimile as is the case with this artist. - ie. he's making a rod for his own back. However, there is a lot to learn here for the aspiring artist who wants to copy from photos.
your method is like drawing in graphite.there are other methods so much less detailed into drawing.they just use shadows first values and then detail.you are faking the background with ink.it is another method, but too elaborated I do not see it as 100 percent charcoal.
Drawing is better than the photo!!!❤
Thank you so much!! This is the most useful video for me to enhance my drawing skill! I love how you explain each details and personally your soft voice calms my mind and relax too.
Love it, love it, love it so much! Beautiful they way you capture the woman! Thank you so much!

Yes, thank you for showing the reference photo continuously. All artists should do that. Excellent demo. Great drawing!

I love your art it’s beautiful .. If you can please mention the brand or kind of charcoal you’re using .. Thank you.
You're so talented!
Thank you so much !
I love watching likeness drawings...
Hello thanks for the video. Are you using a NITRAM Stylus as an extension for the charcoal sticks?
Wonderful!
I agree with the likeness of a drawing, and interpreting what you perceive the drawing to be. It's sometimes hard giving an actual likeness of someone due to this reason.
thank you for your videos. Can you use charcoal like this over a canvas toned with acrylic?
Wonderful thanks I will try.
hi i love your work, i was wondering what paper do you use and what do you use to tone your paper?
Perfect facial symmetry is a indicator of beauty. Most faces are not perfectly symmetrical though. Should I strive for perfect symmetry, or make each side slightly different. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Beautifull!
It looks great! How long did it actually take you to draw it?
Brilliant. Could you please tell us how long did it take you?
Great Work! by the way, it wasn't too clear what ink you used to make the paper tone brown. Thanks.
Sepia ink and water.
What was it that you used to smudge the charcoal that made a squeaky noise. I am from South Africa and some art things are not as common here...
Do you blend with your fingers/kneaded eraser at all? Or do you just put strokes over other strokes? I can never make it as smooth as yours.

It's a beautiful drawing Florent--thank you for sharing your process!
May I ask, did you use hot or cold press/smooth or rough paper for this?
great drawing !! what kind of music listen while you work?
+Klive Bertti It depends on how much energy I need, it can be death metal or classical music :)
+Florent Farges - arts Death metal? Such a nice choice :0
Haha I was gonna ask the same question. 😛
:) !!

Thanks for sharing. Btw, what do you call that ruler-like measuring tool that you have? Tia
Thanks 🙏
What is the long silver and black pencil you are using and what are the short charcoal sticks with green labels on them?
i love it😄😄
How to you avoid wrist and arm ache? I get it frequently and it prevents me from finishing a piece of work.
genia, muchas gracas👍👏👏👌
What's your favorite tool to use for blending?
Even when shading is curved do you not draw curved lines? I struggle very much with this and i never get it right, thanks
No, you have to keep everything as geometric as possible for as long as possible. The curve is only done by polihing angles between two straight lines basically...
great ill pracrice that. And thanks for replying so quickly. 😊
Is that long handled tool a regular brush or foam like for pastels?
It's what's called a "shaper brush" www.geant-beaux-arts.fr/pinceau-colour-shaper-daler-rowney.html
It's some kind of piece of foam or plastic.
thank you!!
is it had to drew peoples faces
What are those charcoals ?
Do you blend your shadows?
Why not Patreon?
Florent Farges Before drawing potrait, Do you colored the background with the brown pastel? Right?
No it's watercolor paper colored with sepia ink mixed with water.
I like how the paper complements the skin texture, great effect!
Great video, lots of tips(subscribes to them now), going to help me figure out my charcoal learnings. Thanks for them :)
