    I have the entire DB series. I was fortunate enough to be in his theory class during the Jamey Aebersold clinic one year. David was SUCH a nice guy. Like Dizzy, he wanted jazz to be accessible by ALL people. He literally wanted to teach EVERYONE!!!

    Thanks Mikko - I discovered this fabulous book some while ago, and learnt some things from it, but as usual your approach and teaching style really connects with my “brain”, my style, my jazz likings, and my ability on the instrument., and has helped me rediscover - or maybe “discover what I’d missed!] Thank you so so much, you are a total inspiration for me. [loved the Coltrane stuff] I noticed that you touched on “enclosures” - A while back I started to make notes on some classic and great sounding - [according to me] enclosures [ miles etc] It occurred to me to suggest that sometime in the future, this could be a possible topic for your great presentation style? Waddya think? Live long and prosper :Dave

    just recently I have found your lessons on youtube,,IMO this is one of the best chanel when it comes to learn jazz,,please don't listen to the critics, be always specific and tecnic like you are,,Barry Harris speaks alot about this concepts and it makes sense to me,,so I'm quite familiar with this approach,,i think is the best way to learn bebop idioms(at least to me),,I ll def. check this book out

    David Baker has a nearly series of his Bebop books that were almost all lines and very little explanation. I look at Baker's Bebop books as a simpler version of the Barry Harris' bebop line approach, Barry can get into a lot of different added notes depending on starting note and rhythm.

      There are lots of Barry Harris videos of pieces of clinics he does on UA-cam. Barry is one of the last guys still around that knew Charlie Parker and the early Beboppers and his teaching is kind of like they were he'll give part of the answer but never the whole answer, let the old cats it about the student playing and listening. There are two DVD sets (very expensive) of Barry doing his seminar that have little booklets with them. Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-hur has a couple books based on his time with Barry. Guitarist Pasquale Grasso works a lot with Barry these days and has bits and pieces of Barry's material in his video. I don't know of any one source for Barry teaching materials, I'd say check out his UA-cams and also Barry's music some on UA-cam and other available for download. The early Beboppers are the foundation for learning Jazz, but to them playing was teaching. Barry talks and the pieces of materials are that foundation. Also Barry is opinionated and doesn't really like Jazz from the mid-50's on and understanding that helps understand where he's coming from. Barry is 88 now and still does clinic in NYC and goes to Europe a couple times a year. So getting Bebop from Barry is getting from someone who was there.

      I have to check out those guys you mention. Thanks for the info. Ans yes, leaving some things for the student to figure out is important and also respectful to the student.

      My favorite is from listening to lots of Barry's videos over and over about the added notes and situations to add which when, then in one video he just says you do what you want to make it work. Those old cat would point you in a direction then the rest was up to the student to listen and play. Like the old story of some guy that kept asking Monk the same question over and over. Finally Monk got mad, walked to the piano, played two chords, and said there's your answer, and walked out.

      Hi Mikko. Firstly I would like to add a link of Barry Harris's workshop books. As far as I understood one of the attendants took notes and arranged the books based on the workshop. Actually, I would like to ask you a question on that topic. ı used to focus on Barry Harris's concept ( I mean adding different passing tones based on where you start - chord tones or not and which chord tone did you start etc ) but in practice, I couldn't find it useful. Because especially on the Parker tunes or up-tempo Rhythm changes songs you couldn't have a chance to think where did I start or am I on a chord tone or not ( I don't know maybe I am wrong ). My question is what is your opinions on that and which book do you recommend the player who wants to focus on bebop language. David Baker's, Bergonzi's or Barry Harris's or any other :) Regards

    By any chance do you have a lesson on David Baker's "perpetual motion" exercise? I can play through it but I find myself making awkward jumps in places---I wonder if other guitarists have better fingerings for this than I do (so far).

    Hi Mikko. In the page one Baker says that the added chromatic note make the scale come out right. On the other pages there are lots of examples without this rule, so I do not understand the point of the book....I think Bergonzi´s Jazz Lines is better in this approach. Lots of times I come back to Bakers book to give it another try, but I does not make much sense to me (IMHO). What do you think?

    • @Mikkokosmos
      @Mikkokosmos  5 років тому

      Hi,
      I'm a bit confused. Could you give an example of where in the book he abandones the rule? 🙂

    • @rodolfoamaralguitar
      @rodolfoamaralguitar 5 років тому

      On page 4 there are lots of phrases that starts on non chord tones (another rule, maybe?). If he said thas that the added chromatic note make the scale come out right, why start on non chord tones?

    • @Mikkokosmos
      @Mikkokosmos  5 років тому +1

      @@rodolfoamaralguitar I'm sorry but I don"t understand the question. Why wouldn't you wanna start on non chord tones. We need to be able to start on any note right? So that we can connect the scales over changes. I'm looking at page for and I see different examples on how to use a C mixo bop scale. Not sure I understand what you arw asking 🤠

    • @rodolfoamaralguitar
      @rodolfoamaralguitar 5 років тому

      Page one: There are a number of reasons why the second scale (F7 bop vs F7 mixo) makes sense. First, in the second scale all of the chord
      tones are on down beats: and second, the tonic of the scale falls on beat one of each successive measure, and the fifth ( C) falls on beat 3. My question is: if the point of the bebop scale is to put the chord tones on downbeat, why practicing puting non-chord tones on downbeat? I can not understand the reason. To me it makes sense to start with non chord tones on upbeats.
