David & I were good friends long ago 1958 till he went to NY. to play with George Russell Quintet . He as a very kind person at the time working on his Masters Degree in music at IU plus heading a Big Band that had just won the National Big Band Contest held at Notre Dame . He also introduced me to my Idol Stan Kenton at The French Jazz Festival a plus was Ann Richards Stan’s beautiful wife . David & I never saw each other again but I heard about his accident & having to give up playing the trombone . I ask him one time what was 1 of the most challenging parts of earning a MS degree ? His answer knowing how to play all the instruments in an Orchestra good thing he started the Cello . I don’t know if everyone knew how well he played the trombone outside of the Avenue- Missle Club but his friends did . His boyhood friends being Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard , JJ Johnson can’t leave out Montgomery Bros , the Hampton Family & many others this young man I knew for a short time was going to be somebody well remembered.. he is .
Thanks for sharing. I had the fortune of crossing paths with Dave many times in Bloomington in the early 1980s. I was just a kid at the time learning saxophone with his students at IU. He was a beacon of caring, musicianship, personality, and leadership.
God's gift to the world ,Dr. David N. Baker, with his unmatched talent and legacy and history that will never die, because he put the great information and music as a gift that will always be remembered! RIP my great friend, student and my mentor! David Hardiman, Sr. www.freewebs.com/davidhardiman
