- Emily and her husband live in a hotel near St Louis with their 4 kids and another one on the way. When we walked in Emily was giving her son a "time out" by sending him to the bathroom. There is no other room. There is no privacy. My heart broke while visiting with Emily and her children. You can feel the nonstop stress this young mother must experience.
Emily's husband lost his job. They then bounced around family until their car broke down and they ended up at this hotel. That was almost a year ago.
Living in weekly rate hotels often becomes a strap. It's $1,000 a month to live there, which is often just most people's paycheck. Emily's husband is now back working and they have been lucky enough to save up some money, yet with an eviction on their record - finding a house or apartment to rent can be challenging.

To the kids its just a long vacation. The little ones are too little to even remember and they look happy, well fed and looked after. Thats more than most kids have.

Really judgemental. They have fallen on hard times. I'm a mom of 5 and one on the way and never have been in this situation until now. My husband was on between jobs to long and the cost of living caused us to get way behind. Things happen

I hope I don’t sound insensitive, she’s better off in a hotel than on the street. She is doing better than many other people in a spot that is not ideal. I pray she gets her family in a more comfortable and safe spot!

That is just what I wanted to say, then I saw your comment and decided not to repeat it. Some people just have a victim mentality. When it rains they complain, when the sun shines, the complain. There are MANY people who have to sleep outside and cannot even brush their teeth. And who is responsible for her housing?

You can claim up to 2K$ a year for child benefit in the US so they could potentially be getting 166$ a month from the government, per child . I don’t know their case so I can’t say that they do it for this purpose but a lot of homeless or poor families do . I think she’s selfish . She already HAS children that need her to be out their working ,not forcing her husband to have to work overtime bc she wants to bring yet another child into the world that she has no means whatsoever to properly take care of. Do you think she’s planning for their futures? Setting them up for success?

Such is the case, for most homeless people,Drea Drea. There's no family home to go to if you need to go home. In this Neoliberal service economy we've been subjected to for 40, years now, lots of people are forced to move back with their parents. Adults with their own lives had to back to something that maybe isn't too good. Back in the 60's and 70's, you could leave home young and get your own place and have a job, go to community college ( free)and have hope for a real future. Not anymore ! More housing that's affordable is the only answer for families like the above.Good people. I hope they escape into affordable housing soon. And the politicians had better bring back the good jobs and manufacturing,or else............

I do agree with that my ex boyfriends sister moved in with him his mom and us and they got pregnant again and this house is so freaking crowded she got pregnant again while staying here and I feel like she did it purposely she has no GED none of them have a driver's license they only income they have is her husband's disability check like I guess they are just going to keep all four of themselves in one bedroom it's insane and her first baby isn't even a year old yet
I understand the pain, especially when you get kicked out by yr family's homes. Been there... rejection is a painful experience. At the end of it all, find my experience to be a blessing. Coz when GOD put me there, I got to to know my parents, my sisters n other relatives a li'l bit 'better'. They said it's hard to find friends who will cry with you. But along my journey, it proved that it was my friends who helped me got back on my feet again.
Such a tough situation to be in. As she says, it turns into a cycle, it’s so hard to break it. I hope she’ll get out of it soon. Been there myself, and it’s not fun. Though I’m sure it’s better than being on the streets. May God bless her and her family. I pray for everyone in that situation. Especially now through Covid. I live in motel 6 for 3 years now and pay 1250.00 a month! My fiance passed away in Jan from double pneumonia, so now it's just me and my cat. It's very hard, and she's right, it is a vicious circle that u can't get out of! But some ppl need to stop doing things to pleasure themselves without protecting the situation from getting 7 times worse!! I do NOT feel sorry for those ppl!

I agree completely. The Hyde Amendment did make all things related to birth control harder. It makes Medicaid payments for abortions illegal-- one must pay about $500 for one. Do many don't even have $400 set aside for emergencies. Yet Medicaid will pay for births. Did it pay for this wife's births, or was it private insurance ?? My biggest argument in the entire debate about poverty and what should be done, is that I rarely see anyone hold themselves accountable and accept that their systemically poor choices led to their situations it seems to always be someone else's fault, bad luck etc..

Edited to add: this comment came more from pain than judgement. I lived in a hotel for 3 years when I was younger and had never considered myself homeless at the time. It was a shock to me that I had in fact been homeless not a way to down grade how difficult this woman's life was.

Her children are clean happy laughing and the father sounds like a hard working man. Families fall on hard times all you can do is make the best of them, and get back up. Amazing kids haven't driven her insane yet. Husband making just over $2000/mo with a family of 7 isn't enough support. Excepting this place being WAY small for such a large family, at least they don't have any utility bills to pay -- the one advantage of a weekly motel rental. It would be better to find one similar priced that had continental breakfast daily. Best thing for them is to keep saving. Should be able to get into a HUD house purchase after the bankruptcy has been closed a year, probably easier than renting another place.

Having unprotected sex is a poor decision, not a mistake. Clearly with 4 kids she is quite fertile n knows this. Its very irresponsible of her to have gotten pregnant. Having already lived in a motel with 4 kids for a year she was quite aware of her situation yet chose to bring another poor child into the world for my, and others tax dollars to feed, clothe n pay for medical. T C lol im not expecting anyone to pay for me but I also realize that capitalism is designed to exploit people, and that not everyone has a choice when they fall pregnant didn’t come to your mind? Like you don’t know their life or how they came about being pregnant yet again. For being so clearly a capitalist libertarian you mind other people’s business pretty hard. Isn’t the whole idea you do your own business and don’t get involved in other people’s stuff?
Now its $2000 a month for a hotel at a minimum and landlords require at least $3k a month income to rent.
Why do they keep getting pregnant when they know they dont have a place to live i dont get it but i wish them the Best.

Your Homeless and been there for 1 year, & Pregnant! Really U shouldn't have been having sex to get pregnant when your living in a small space with your children.
Everyone needs to stop judging her!! It's easy to tell her not to have kids if your not living her life! Birth control can be hard to come by if your strapped for cash and it is also not always 100% effective. Also, if they only have one vehicle because their car got repossessed it only means that she is now stuck watching the kids instead of paying for daycare for all four of them. I actually commend her for trying to keep it all together in the midst of all the turmoil. It takes a great amount of strength, courage, love, compassion and understanding to follow your husband through "Thick and Thin- for better or for worse!" Many cowardice people would have left their partner, the father of their children due to the financial struggle looking for a way out.... But not her.. she stuck it through... Being a good wifey, tending to her husband's and children's needs.. doing the best with the little they have. In those situations even applying for assistance is a hard tasks with a disconnected cell phone due to non-payment and no babysitter. Yes, it's hard but LOVE is greater! And God can supply All needs according to His riches in glory, even when your in a rut.
Gotta put a stop to the breeding when you already have too many kids and you’re homeless. The more mouths she and her husband make the more difficult this situation becomes for them.
I’m currently at the end of the eviction rope getting ready so spend my last night the apartment I’ve had since 2009. In a few hours I will be officially homeless. Fortunately I don’t have any kids.
I still have a job but with the eviction on my record it’s going to be virtually impossible to get into another apartment. On the bright side I’m going to look at room for rent tomorrow.

I've lived in a hotel during a tough time. It's a hard time while looking for housing because living in a hotel/motel is more expensive than renting. Which she is just mentioning it now.
It's hard... I know first hand,I was homeless for three years in a motel with three kids... I met my husband and because of him I now have a great home and a good life...
