Love his music. Never in my 46 yrs have I been so addicted and awestruck by any musician as I am by jordan. His humor, sense of timing, songwriting, vocals and velvety sax sounds have knocked.me for an unexpected loop. I think I should lived in 40s.
Joe is a great musician n many levels. Jordan is very underrated, not as a musician, but as a pivotal character as the big bands died and rock n roll was inspired by combos like his.
5 guys named Moe - the best theatre experience I have had in 77 years. Forget t6he name of the guy who produced this musical, but he also did "Unforgetable" a solo tribute to Nat King Cole - another masterpiece !
Jordan started in swing, then created his own style called jump and jive, which is what he's playing in this song. You can hear elements of rock and roll, which was not to explode for another 10 years. Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, James Brown, Little Richard and many other legends all copped a lot of their sound from Jordan. He is remembered as the Father of Rock and Roll (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame).
Things I love about Louis Jordan, He was way ahead of his time and his music can always put a smile on my face. Too bad he's not here in 2016 because I'd vote for JORDAN FOR PRESIDENT!
And six guys named Larry, and 1½ guys named Curly. "Why 1½?" "The guy said 'Pick a number.' 1½'s a number, ain't it? He didn't say nothin' about what kind of number."
@mannyzload Your Dad sure had good taset in music. You know, Mr. Jordan is credied by some music authorities to be the father of Rock N Roll. Whether you believe that or not, he was a most extraordinary musician. You will never forget that song...It heartens me to know that you have passed it on to your daughter. It's people like you, that make the internet fun. Thank you very much for your post. R>
Joe Jackson covered this song. He did a great homage to Louis Jordan & friends. No denying that this was the original and absolutely wonderful, however.
No their impact CANNOt be denied and you are right, most people are not even aware of their important contributions to music and rock n roll and thythm and blues and jazz! . Take Nat King Cole..most people know him for Mona Lisa or Unforgettable. Not that those tunes were anything to criticize. But Nat and his trio were innovators, Just like Louis
Let me tell you a story from way back, Truck on down and dig me, Jack, There's Big Moe, little biddy Moe, four eyed Moe, No Moe, Look at brother, look at brother, look at brother, Eat Moe! Who's the greatest band around, Makes the cats jump up and down, Who's the talk of rhythm town, Five guy's named Moe, that's us! When they start to beat it out, Everybody jumps and shouts, Tell me who the critics all rave about, Five guys named Moe. We came out of nowhere, And that don't mean a thing, We rate high and you'll know why, When you hear us sing, sing, sing, sing, sing. High brow, low brow, they all agree, We're the best in harmony, I'm telling you folks, you really ought to see, Five guys named Moe We came out of nowhere, And that don't mean a thing, We rate high
First you have to acknowledge that Mr. Jordans group was created because the big bands were hurting cause of the war and recordning restrictions...unions...and more....so out of financial necessity..the smaller bands came into being. Big Joe turned was one name that had the jump thing going...with the Count Basie band.. nothing starts in a vacuum. Some people say that Elvis created RnR. Many experts question that...thank you for the question.
This is a tune I want to perform as well. I'll won't get to it for awhile yet. I guess in my head I hear a I VI II V basic progression but I haven't attempted it yet. Drop me line now and then and share your experience with it. Not necessarily what the chords are...but any snags you come upon. Do you plan to learn this for your own pleasure or perform it with a band??

I might consider throwing Cab Calloway's name in there too

Just a note that the Tympany Five, Jordan's group, was first recorded in 1938, well before the war, as far as the US being involved.
Just Groovy :-)

Why do I love this?

What a shame we don't have another Six guys named Moe for the alto, clarinet and trombone sections!
Lyrics were written by Larry Wynn (1909-1999) and the music was written by Jerry Bresler (1914-2000)

You have to be careful making broad statements ...its not as simple as that.
