Louis Jordan was one of the half dozen most important musicians in American history, and other musicians have always felt aggrieved on his behalf because he has been viciously cheated by an historical obscurity which he deserves the opposite of.

NICE line of thought, nice sentence. Can U continue. Not that many highbrow commentators on this lowbrow system-forum. I have several of his best albums from the 50s in NM cond. Will never sell, originals of c. Louie was a phenomenon, much alike Wynonie Harris, Roy Milton, Buddy Johnson, Lucky Millinder, Panama Francis ...what an incredible Era ...Charles Brown I interviewed in NOLA in his room @ Hyatt during 88 Jazz & Heritage. What a warm, polite gentleman. GATEMOUTH MOORE is in similar category, totally obscure & unrecognized ..4 the masses..a fabulous R&B balladeer ... So it goes - Kurt Vonnegut ... 2 bad.

@@sulevisydanmaa9981 , thank you for the kind words. I'm not sure there is much more I can say. I'm not a musicologist, and am reminded of the fact every time I read the work of musicologists. It's just that my ear tells me it was a short hop from what Louis Jordan was doing to 50s rock. But then, you can hear the beginnings of rock in Count Basie's "One O' Clock Jump" and Artie Shaw's "Summit Ridge Drive," both from circa 1940. And it is my impression, which I can't confirm with facts, that most musicians would assert that Louis Jordan has been wrongly overlooked. That happens a lot in the arts. I'll tell you someone else I've always thought has been overlooked, Kay Starr. Billie Holliday thought highly of her, calling her "the only white girl who can sing the blues."

@@khaleedabdul-azeezedwards9523 Music can't be categorized and limited like that. Musicians borrow, mix and incorporate all kinds of genres into their sound. RUN-DMC proved that when they dropped King Of Rock.

@sentry8992 Music can be categorized, and it is categorized for good reason. It's a good thing, not a bad thing. Don't take music too seriously, I definitely don't. As far as Run DMC goes, clearly Rap, clearly Hip Hop. Everyone borrows from everyone else, like you said, but they make it their own. If you were to say to anyone from the DMV where I'm from, by the way, that Chuck Brown was a rapper just because he rapped a few lines, they would argue you down. Because he was a GoGo artist. Every genre has its own distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other genres. I immediately recognize GoGo music 💯 percent. I'm also old enough and young enough to have been around when Rap/Hip Hop first started. So I grew up with Hip hop. I would never mistake the SOS band for Rap music or opera music. Smh

Now if you've ever been down to New Orleans
Then you can understand just what I mean
All through the week, it's quiet as a mouse
But on Saturday night, they go from house to house
You don't have to pay the usual admission
If you're a cook, a waiter or a good musician
So if you happen to be just passin' by
Stop in at the Saturday Night Fish Fry
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
Now my buddy and me was on the main stem
Foolin' around just me and him
We decided we could use a little something to eat
So we went to a house on Rampart Street
We knocked on the door and it opened up with ease
And a lush little miss said, "Come in, please"
And before we could even bat an eye
We were right in the middle of a big fish fry
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
Now the folks was havin' the time of their life
And Sam was jivin' Jimmie's wife
Over in the corner was a beat up grand
Being played by a big fat piano man
Some of the chicks wore expensive frocks
Some of them had on bobbie socks
But everybody was nice and high
At this particular Saturday Night Fish Fry
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
Now the women were screamin' and jumpin' and yellin'
The bottles was flyin' and the fish was smellin'
And way up above all the noise they made
Somebody hollered, "Better get out of here, this is a raid"
Now I didn't know we was breakin' the law
But somebody reached up and hit me on the jaw
They had us blocked off from the front to the back
And they was puttin' 'em in the wagon like potato sacks
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
I knew I could get away if I had a chance
But I was shakin' like I had the St. Vitus dance
Now I tried to crawl under a bathtub
When the policeman said, "Where you goin' there, bub?"
Now they got us out of there like a house afire
Put us all in that Black Maria
Now, they might have missed a pitiful few
But they got poor me and my buddy too
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
We headed for jail in a dazed condition
They booked each one of us on suspicion
Now my chick came down and went for my bail
And finally got me out of that rotten jail
Now if you ever want to get a fist in your eye
Just mention a Saturday night fish fry
I don't care how many fish in the sea
But don't ever mention a fish to me
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
It was rockin', it was rockin'
    You never seen such scufflin'
And shufflin' 'til the break of dawn
Give me one of them, their fish sandwiches
Get away from there, boy, yowza
