It's just that my ear tells me it was a short hop from what Louis Jordan was doing to 50s rock. But then, you can hear the beginnings of rock in Count Basie's "One O' Clock Jump" and Artie Shaw's "Summit Ridge Drive," both from circa 1940. And it is my impression, which I can't confirm with facts, that most musicians would assert that Louis Jordan has been wrongly overlooked. That happens a lot in the arts. I'll tell you someone else I've always thought has been overlooked, Kay Starr. Billie Holliday thought highly of her, calling her "the only white girl who can sing the blues."
I would have never known about him if A man who was A family friend told me about A saxophonist I should listen to, I was deeply into John Coltrane ,and came to find out many of the greats such as Trane ,Rollins all dug Louis Jordan. As A Saxophonist I went back there ,and still digging LJ .
