I bought my Russian tortoise from Petsmart about 6-7 weeks ago. She came from the breeder and she is super healthy! They only had her for 24 hours when I came in and got her. And even if she was there longer and did not look good, I would spend the money to get her to a vet quick! I also have her in a 40g open aquarium for her to be able to dig and play and eat. I take her outside to roam and play as well almost daily. She is definitely a happy girl!

I bought my tortoise, Taz, from Petsmart because he was in a small enclosure and was scratching like hell to get out of it. We bought him to keep outside in the back yard and have provided a big area for him to roam and have a small garden of greens and flowers for him to forage on. I don't think Petsmart was even feeding him greens, just the tortoise pellets that they sell in their store. He seems really heathy and happy and is in the most natural environment he can be in. In my opinion, I feel that we rescued him from Petsmart.

Now I do understand what this guy is getting at however I am planning on getting a Russian tortoise from Petco. Now that being said I will only buy one from a totally clean tank (suitable living conditions) and if there are sick tortoises in with it I will not be buying one from there. I have my standards I have a whole checklist that must be met before I purchase. When I do get a tortoise they will be going to the vet almost immediately after I purchase them I have the money to pay for that :) once I get the guy nice and evaluated by a vet they will come home and live the best life I can give them! I have done a shit load of research and I believe I will give the little guy a great home! 🤗😊

If y'all are looking for a good place to get a Tortoise check out SoCal Reptiles. I got mine there and she hasn't had any problems. They are super nice and helpful. You can get your Tortoise as soon as they are ready to go. I got Tipsy as a little baby and she's growing big and strong. They make sure to only ship on weather permitting days and all.

suckycrap They usually send them back to the animal mill that they came from so they can have a replacement sent back to them. The animal mill will usually kill the sick animal because they won't be able to sell it and it will cost money to help it.

I heard bad things how Pet store treated their reptiles before it go out for sale. But I don’t know how we define bad or good. I considered a bad thing when people buy reptile and years later the owner decided to rehome their reptile for more money. People don’t take a life time responsibility. I bought Russian tortoise from Petsmart and Petco and they turn out great pet. Just like buying cars and sometimes you get a lemon. I’m glad you have good luck.

I got my first two tortoises from PetSmart. But the first one I owned already was.sick and he died at the age of 2. Vets didn't know what to do. We had two different cages at each 4 foot 8 foot cage. They didn't overheat. Then there's my other tortoise had him for 5 years until he got sick and died at age 10. Then I went to a store only in my state and it was farm raised and to this day he is still healthy.

Honestly pet smart isn't the best place to buy them, however, the reason they got sick is most likely because you kept them together. Yeah they get parasites, but the parasites don't affect them. What affects them is being kept with other parasite ridden tortoises. Thats why the one you have now is fine, because it's by itself. So you can get them from petco, but just get one or keep them separate.

+frank & bianca I've just done a lot of research on them, and I got one from Petco less than a week ago and it's healthy. Just saying that its not really a chance kinda thing. Its not like some are healthy and some arent. You just have to keep them right, which it looks like you are doing with yours.

I've had a Thee Toed Box turtle for 13 years (they are similar to a tortious). I got him at a local store that specialized in reptiles. but anyways I would NEVER buy an animal online or that specialized type of animal in pet stores. the issues with online is that 1. you cant see it to make sure its healthy ( people can fake pictures to make a quick buck. 2. the shipping and living environments can be terrible and you are never really sure when that package arrives. 3 the travel.... I would recommend going to a licensed breeder or if there's a pet store that SPECAILIXE in the type of animal you want to go there and of course do all lot of research!!! (this goes to all animals, not just turtles!) .

Trent Fitzgerald how long have you had your tortoise? maybe he's not eating enough how often do you feed him and how often does it get water it can be dehydrated. how long has it been acting this way? you know its getting cold and he can be trying to hibernate...aslo look for red flags, wave your hand in front of his face see if he reacts if he doesn't move when you do it it's a bad sign.also check for discoloration on his shell and foaming from the eyes and mouth.also look at his poop if its real watery that's bad or if it comes out hard and yellow looking it's bad.those are all bad sgins

I bought my russian tortoise from petsmart. They told me that when he first arrived, the container he was in was wet so it caused an infection all over his shell. They took him to a local reptile vet who helped them get him well again. After he was cleared by the vet, they put him back on the sales floor. I followed up with that vet and he said you could lift each part of his shell up and see underneath. I've had him for 5 years now and he is thriving. He is very affectionate. I think he is pretty grateful.

  • @kylozact3412

I know this video is old, but I would like to tell my story. I bought a Russian named Willie who was from Petco. A year after I brought him home, we took him to the vet because he was not eating. When we went to the vet, they told us not to have dirt in his aside from in a small area, not to have a glass cage, and to not feed him kale (which the person at Petco told us to get), and they had to medicate him for parasites. Do not trust Petco employees, they have no idea what the hell they are doing. Six months later, we had to take him back again for worms, and we cleaned his eyes cage for four hours, medicated him, and tried our best. Now my loveable guy is sick again. I love him so much and it pains me to see him not eating. I learned my lesson the hard way, and a lesson I did not think I would learn when I wad 13 three years ago. Do not buy pet store tortoises. I am trying to give my little guy the life he deserves. Learn from my story; don't make my mistake, and don't fund the pet trade.

I took Tes to the veterinarian and found the she was healthy but they suggested that she may have been neglected. I’ve had her for 6 months now and she is thriving and super active. She cost $130.00 but all the money I spent getting her healthy and into an enclosure was pretty expensive. So you’re right about PetSmart and tortoises. I now have 10 torts in total all bought from reputable farms that were breed in captivity. These poor little tortoises were so sick. And instead of trying to help them you RETURNED them. And said that they were a waste of time, money and effort. You are so ignorant I can't believe it. Yes, you shouldn't buy any pets from pet stores. To not continue the torture for these animals. Not because they are a waste of anything. This made me cry and I hope that someday every future owner of a pet will be tested before being allowed to adopt any animal. And until that day comes, PLEASE get your pets from a shelter and never from pet stores... Thanks.

Susie Danner hey I will admit at the time I was ignorant I knew nothing about reptiles are tortoises in general at all so that's why I returned the sick tortoises I didn't know any better. to me at the time it was a waste of money and effort nobody wants to go buy a sick animal especially if they know nothing about the animal itself that's why I suggest in all my videos to do your research first, and you know some people just don't have the money to better the animal especially if they don't know what they're getting themselves into now if I was prepared at the time I would have kept the tortoises and brought him back to health but I knew nothing. now is a different story.

Beautiful setup. When I was younger, nearing 20, I bought reptiles and small animals from PetCo unknowingly. Years later, after witnessing sickness and cancer in nearly half my animals, I smartened up.
Now, all of my reptiles I've had for years and they're super healthy- all from reptile stores (that double as rescues.) My rabbit was adopted and she's nearing 6 and is as healthy as can be. Never again will I buy from mega pet stores. I even go to rallies against them.

He is a terrible tortoise owner I feel so bad for that tortoise when it flipped over he just started yelling at it to flip back over! I have a pet tortoise I am so outraged! I hate you person who made this video! He didn’t call a vet when it had parasites and the mouth was foaming!?! I am outraged! I HATE YOU PERSON WHO MADE THIS!!! You are a terrible person I started crying when I watched this video my Russian tortoise is amazing and a LOT BETTER cared for then your tortoise you are a TERRIBLE PET owner and the WORST PET OWNER EVER! And you should help these tortoises instead of calling it a “waste” you are a terrible tortoise owner, you should sell it or give it to a better more loving owner and I don’t think he was scratched up when u bought him I think he has just gotten scratched up living with you. Look at how hungry he is. That tortoise is so mal nourished you are a terrible pet owner I feel so bad for that tortoise, like I said, YOU ARE TERRIBLE and u don’t know what your talking about, people and pets aren’t going to get sick from tortoises (except for salmanila)

I got my beautiful Redfoot tortoise from PetsMart 9 years ago. She’s still doing alright, but the ppl at petsmart weren’t able to help me correctly when I had questions.
I’d recommend new owners to buying a tortoise from a reptile show , like Repti-con.

reptile shows are the same as pet stores except reptile shows have captive bred turtles and torts, but same bottom line, they are in it for the money, they really don't care for the turtle or torts well being,I bought a baby sulcata from repticon and it died 3 months later,,she was doing really good and then died one day,I did everything right, but I have a beautiful 7 yro sulcata now,but yes at least reptile shows have captive bred turtles and torts!

I'm really sad to say my sister bought my tortoise from Petco. I absolutely love my baby and wouldn't trade her for any other tortoise, but I hate supporting Petco since they treat all of their animals horribly.
And I really, really hope my baby wasn't wild caught.. I know not all of them are, but that's really sad because a lot of people keep their tortoises in tiny enclosures all day which would drive a wild tortoise insane :-(( my tortoise currently has an entire room to herself while I build her a table, and when the weather is nice I put her in her large 8 x 4 enclosure outside. Tortoises are a lot more active and adventurous than most people think, so it makes me really sad to see so many people not giving them the proper care they need.
@ everyone looking for a tortoise: always look for tortoise rescue centers first!! They're happy and healthy, they just need new homes like dogs at animal shelters.

wow, the niavity in this video is just absurd. I don't work for the pet shop that you had constantly mentioned but I do work for one you noted a few times. I cannot speak for petsmart but I will say most of us have strict animal care standards. The housing we keep pets in is not meant to be permanent, it is just meant to be a housing until a permanent home is found. The tanks have built in circulation unlike a regular "tanks or aquariums" with heat and UVB bulbs. they are fed everyday with fresh veggies and a pellet diet. they are monitored for humidity and temp 5 times a day and cleaned once a week with a 2 per tank max (which is 30 gallons). They are captive breed and not wild caught. They are also on a length of stay timeline which means, If they are kept for longer than 3 months are discounted and after longer discounted more until they are free to a good home so that their lives are not spent in the temporary home. As far as illness, animals, like people go through it. when they are sick we take them to the vet. It is paid for by our multi million dollar business and is barely and expense they feel. Matter a fact people could lose their job if animals don't come first. It doesn't come out of my pocket so why not take them to the vet. They receive better care than what most pet parents provide. So before you go spouting untruths maybe do more research into the company you are buying from and don't support them by buying from them. Or you could even maybe not say anything at all. On a side note though you do have a great enclosure for your tortoise and I recommend something similar to people who are interested in them. I hope you provide it the 30+ years of care it requires.

Tiffany Jarzombek bless you, seriously. why aren't more people like you. :b I do agree, his tank is wonderful! and my petsmart has strict standards for pet care. it's most pet parents km my area who want to be cheap with there pets. we feed our animals (small & bird) 2 times a day, with the exclusion of reptiles and fish. we do weekly bedding changes, we always make sure everyone on the floor is happy and healthy. if an animals health KS questionable even by the slightest, we take it to the back and nurse it back to health with the help of our local area vet. not all petsmarts and petcos are horrible. it's the people some of them hire that can be horrible/questionable.

I'm guilty.. I saved 2 turtles from petsmart.. it was breaking my heart..one female and one male..they looked so sick and sounded like they had a upper respiratory infection..and from there they went to the vet and got the antibiotics and care that they needed.. now alot of people who buy turtles or tortoises dont understand the demand it takes to care for them...and I tell you its not cheap.. but I brought them back to life.. and they live in big tanks and have everything they need and are happy and spunky and love to bask and swim and just do what turtles do.. what is sad the people that worked there that was in charge of the reptiles..had like no education on them what so ever..they didnt address anything that I needed or tried to make sure someone who knows what it takes to care for them before someone tried to buy one.. and it literally blew my mind.. but yeah that's my petsmart experience..I wish I could save every single animal out there it really breaks my heart what they have to go through💔

I have a Russian tortoise that I got from Petsmart a few years ago and thankfully she was healthy when I got her, but looking back on it with what I know now and looking at the tortoises in Petco/Petsmart now (which don't seem very happy or healthy) I wish I had gotten a tortoise from a breeder. Unfortunately, I didn't know about such things at the time and would probably have been put off by it due to the fact that they ship in a tiny box and everything. ( I still don't love the thought but I suppose it's the only option) I originally thought Petsmart bred their tortoises and it's very sad that they don't. If I ever decide to get a buddy for my tortoise I will most definitely do a lot of research on where to buy. Thanks for the video.

Should I return him and try to get one online? There's only one other pet shop in town and they are dirty, nasty, and keep huge reptiles in the smallest cages so don't have a good feeling about them. Any advice would be appreciated. I loved your video, enclosure, and tort is so cool!

Their service is awful too, i asked of they were planning on getting any babies soon, and without even looking at me a worker told me no and kept walking, never going back to petco, their prices are horribly expensive compared to small buisness reptile shops.
