- Congratulations to Petty Officer 1st Class Vince Bucaneg on being nominated for, and earning, Company Commander of the Quarter!
Bucaneg assumed the duties of a Recruit Company Commander at Training Center Cape May on July 9, 2018. As part of the Training Division at Training Center Cape May, he is a member of a more than 50-person corps of highly trained company commanders that develop recruits into Coast Guard service members.
Earning the honor of being the CCOQ isn’t a walk in the park. In fact, you are competing against the best people the service has to offer, and your peers are the ones that nominate you for that title.
Chief Petty Officer Gus Casey, the Company Commander School chief, has worked with Bucaneg for the past year and a half and has seen his positive attitude and professional skill first-hand and was the one who nominated him.
“Vince represents the best of us, but most importantly he represents what our Company Commander Creed stands for, on and off duty,” Casey said. "He demonstrates by his own example, the highest standards of personal conduct and professional skill."
Bucaneg, a native of Honolulu, wasn’t always a company commander. Before he was drawn to the blustery winters of Cape May last year, he is was stationed around the country. He started his career in the Coast Guard in August of 2005, and since then he has served at Aids to Navigation Team Astoria, Station Bodega Bay, Coast Guard Cutter Ahi, Base Honolulu, and the Coast Guard Cutter Chase.
Not only was Bucaneg motivated to perform at his job, but he decided to take his career further. He volunteered to attend Boat Forces Command Cadre School, Engineering Petty Officer Ashore course, Leadership Facilitator Course, MTU Engine Maintainer course, and ATON Structure Climber course.
While serving at those duty stations, Bucaneg earned a Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and other personal and service awards. He has held qualifications on a 37-foot Medium Endurance Cutter, 87-foot Patrol Boat, 47-foot Motor Lifeboat, 29 and 25-foot Response Boat-Small, 26-foot Trailerable Aids to Navigation Boat, and a 20-foot ATON Boat-Small.
Bucaneg spends his free time being a father to his first newborn son. He is currently serving as the President of the Company Commander Association and he also spends his time working on his 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, woodworking and working out - a lot.
