  • In this Plant Something Sunday episode, it's a beginner's guide and tips on how to plant a Ginkgo Tree (with a subtle by-product of engaging in some horticultural therapy).
Mental health awareness of the self can easily be found in your garden spaces while you work on planting. Gardening helps to ground you in the present moment with yourself and loved ones, offer body movement to fluctuate all those feel-good hormones, offers immediate sensory distractions from stress, and bathing in green natural landscapes (shinrin yoku) helps one to heal in many dynamics; mentally physically. It's basically Green Witchcraft for the Anxious Gardener.
Gardening has always been a part of my life in one form or another. In recent years, it has bloomed in my life as a way to help bring health, wellness, and balance for myself and into our family's home. We can learn a lot about what plants can do to benefit us, from the air and nutrition we need to the sensory escapism it can bring. I hope by offering a few basic tips here and there and a little music to add levity to the process, the perception to find less intimidation and more ease to start growing your first botanical project.
Remember: the best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago, the second-best time is to plant one right now.

Sometimes one habit can be resetting enough for better productivity, yet sometimes it is hard to admit the overall structure needs to be revisited when 'it's just not working' feels like the heaviest part of depression and anxiety related aspects in life. I struggle with ptsd in my life, and I am actively in pursuit to look for a better formula for what can work well for me. How to get your life together through simple living, wellness, self care routines, healthy habits are keywords for those looking for self betterment in their personal growth journey. Currently, I am applying myself to approach looking at things more in pursuit of addressing systems vs goals, or is it goals vs systems? Anyway, I hope that with my little lgbtq vlog, friendly conversations can be shared or inspiration brought to help those who are looking for it to have a do-able healthier lifestyle with habits that are good for you, within reach for you, and overall good habits for mental health and personal growth.

If you watch real close, in the beginning, Prudence and Rupert just go strolling down the road, knowing that I am too distracted by planting something to yell at them. :-/

I hope this makes the process seem less intimidating! Let me know how it gets through the season and if you have any questions as it establishes itself!

Some say to add dolomite lime to aid the growth of the Gingko. Do you have any thoughts on that?

I think the reason why male species are preferred due to the odor of it's female counterpart. I remember watching a KDrama and a doctor opposed the idea of planting a ginkgo tree in the hospital since they smell bad.

Actually female trees of a number of species are "preferred " due to their fruiting habits which need to be cleaned up. Female ginkgoes drop a lot of fruit and create a sticky stinky mess. Quite a few other species produce a mess as well without the smell. Nyc usually plants male ginkgoes some of which transition into females, in whole or in part. Not a good place to park your car.

Ginkos have a wide environmental setting range! Check with your local ag center if you are unsure for the subspecies you plan to plant
