    The romance of the railways in the United Kingdom was arguably at its best when hundreds of minor railway lines traversed the countryside.
    In those days the locomotive drivers would have unscheduled stops along the line picking up or dropping off goods as they meandered from village to village.
    Consequently, it is not surprising that some of the local inhabitants who relied upon the railway would have called their local train 'Valley Drifter'.

    Nice, but you could do with making some more sets which use TTS pre-fitted engines and DCC select controllers

    I recently bought the Valley Drifter set. It goes perfectly with the Santa Express. They certainly stimulate the imagination and make a great less-serious side to railway modeling. I would like to suggest an expansion to these sets by the production of the Railroad four wheeled coaches in the same red livery and perhaps have individual reindeer nameplates, such as 'Rudolph' 'Blitzen' and the rest, thus making up a passenger Santa Express train. It would be interesting when trying to collect the full set of coaches. A Train pack would be even better.
    I like the 101 type locos and have most of the GWR running numbers. I would want to collect different red liveried and named locos too.

      Rock. Because the loco is named after the rock band King Crimson, and the mining company on the wagon is named after the band's guitarist and founder Robert Fripp.

    OK, I understand the reference to Robert Fripp and his prog rock band King Crimson but where does Valley Drifter fit in with that?

    I see it includes the mutated RCH 7-plank wagon with backwards sides that was originally made for the Thomas clockwork range 😛
    Looking at the GWR 101 with those colors affirms my opinion that Hornby really missed a trick by not doing Lady for their Thomas range to tie in with TatMR. Even if they didn't want to make a new tooling, the 101 could have been passably dolled up as her.
    I have to roll my eyes at the number of comments whinging about the lack of DCC fitting/readiness. DCC has its uses, but it's not the be-all end-all. And in this sort of set all it would do is drive up the price.
    Strictly speaking, that's a railer, not a *re*-railer.

    I'm glad I'm not the person who has to keep making up new names for these starter sets. Wonder what the next one will be called, Valley Rambler, Highland Drifter, Highland Flinger?

    Super starter set but they need updating to the digital age.

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 3 роки тому

      I agree if they can fit digital decoder's into small locomotives like the Peckett and Ruston Hornsby 48DS they can surely add a digital decoder port somewhere. They could even sell a kit to convert all of the existing older versions of these 0-4-0 locomotives

      @@bentullett6068 It's not just about space. It's also about the design of the chassis and the pricetag of the set.

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 10 місяців тому

      I think a more important update for this (and correspondingly, the L&YR Pug) would be retooling the chassis to have separately-fitted couplers. A lot of chassis and bogies could use that, tbh. Shouldn't up the price much if at all, and would make coupler repair and replacement much easier.

  • @HarryCrabb-j9q

    Is this licenced? Fripp is notoriously litigious. Who came up with this?

  • @bentullett6068
    @bentullett6068 3 роки тому +2

    I like these little sets but I do feel that these little 0-4-0 locomotives need to be given a digital interface. Also the old Class 0F pug need to be upgraded to the digital age. Most of the Railroad range is DCC ready and there are smaller locomotives like the Ruston 48 and Peckett that are DCC ready.

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 11 місяців тому +1

      Thing is, modifying the ancient chassis to be DCC ready would drive up the price of these sets a bit, which is contrary to their purpose.

    Who are you trying to convince that this is a quality product? The loco and the rolling stock are made from old tooling that is frankly very poor in today's market compare with the likes of Bachmann, Accurascale, Dapol etc etc. Hornby are charging huge prices for sub-standard models. Overall very poor.

    • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
      @ZeldaTheSwordsman 11 місяців тому

      Detail is not the sole measure of quality. Robustness and reliability are also important benchmarks, especially when concerning lighthearted budget sets made for children and other newcomers to get their feet wet in the hobby.
      Also, *everybody* is overcharging, both on new toolings and old. They're in a death spiral of raising prices to make up for sales shortfalls (which of course reduces sales further...). Although, losses on new toolings from rivet-counter fickleness can't help matters either.
