I say calmly: XG GROUP OF THE YEAR! They may not have numbers or a large fan base (because quantity does not mean quality), but in terms of perfection they were IMPECCABLE! They simply released SHOOTING STARS, LEFT RIGHT, GRL GVNG, TGIF, NEW DANCE AND PUPPET SHOW >only< in 2023. This is very surreal! This year they delivered aesthetics, concept, marketing, photography, EVERYTHING! How can they not have ONE bad song?! Note: I'm not part of the fandom, but it's NECESSARY to recognize that they were giants this year.

If XG keep getting attention in Japan and US, that's a massive music market (2nd & 1st in market size) they have amazing potential among the 4th generation.

What you said about XG experimenting is so true. Harvey's "toothless" look was being discussed and netizens were saying it didn't look good and what not. I commend Simon and XG for not being afraid of "not looking pretty/aesthetic" if it means their message gets across. In a sense they remind me of Sunmi and how she is also going the extra mile to deliver a message. Their outfits, make up, hairstyles, etc... are not for everyone but no one else could pull it off like them.

For me.. XG has that coolness, swag, confidence and vibe that 2NE1 had! They are that 2023/4th gen version of them that why I have really really liked them because they are sooo different from other girl groups. They are soooo unique and never miss!! I agree with you, sometimes we forgot that kpop is a very limited space artistically. It doesnt mean a bad thing tho, the high standard that kpop have is definitely the reason that made kpop unique to other "genre". But inside kpop itself, they dont display that much personality. Really, we need to give props to the production teams. I think the team are all from korea. But you can see that they use a different guidelines than usual kpop groups have. Like they dont have many full-face shots, the make up are more elaborate, the NAILS, and the outfits are all outstandings. I think they do try to incorporate japanese fashion trends into this, like there are no place in the world that would be as crazy as japanese when it comes to mixing, layering colors and textures. Its not for everyone, but they definitely having fun making all of the looks. Stragely, futuristic/sci-fi concept is actually pretty popular within jpop, but ofc not as elaborate as XG. There are FEMM, a performers duo that is also under Avex (XG's main company). FEMM labeled themselves as a real-life mannequin, so when they performing they always have robotic choreo and their mv are also very futuristic, and they sings in english too. And as an old pop fan, I do think that they gain a lot of ideas from old-school jpop, in 90's and early 2000's jpop is heavily inspired by american music, hence there are a lot of rnb and hip-hop performers. And I'm pretty sure japanese diva like Namie Amuro or Koda Kumi had a very futuristic mv, I cant remember which one tho.
I feel that's why I'm Red Velvet stan because of how unique of their concepts and sounds. Definitely loving what they are doing with XG. BTW they just released a multiverse version of "New Dance". 😊
XG have been my favorite artist this year I think. When I make my top 10 songs of the year in December there are going to multiple XG songs on the list for sure. The music is good, the girls are fun, the fashion is bold and fearless and breaks away from the boring “aesthetic pretty” that has been dominating lately. It’s just been so much fun to watch them kill it this year and I’m excited to see what they bring next!
28:10 I think I get you. There are a set of kpop tropes that have worked for over a decade now so they aren’t testing the boundaries of those tropes as much. It’s creative, but a limited creativity. It’s creative within some fairly rigid boundaries. I mean, I love NCT but making a song about Baggy Jeans? It’s visually and aurally appealing but…it’s about pants. It’s a song about pants. The pants could be a metaphor but it’s still pants and they are taking their pants seriously. The girl groups don’t seem to move boundaries even as much as the boy groups do, with some exceptions. (G)IDLE for instance. The music is generally safe and predictable and not quite as weird or fun. In my opinion, that is. I’m loving XG. The music is good and it’s fun. I like the fun girl power vibe. They’re a bizarre mix of EXO and the Spice Girls but they manage to not sound dated at all. It sounds really fresh and interesting. And they are all so talented! OMG their voices and the charisma!

I’m really hoping they will and they should. No other group or label is doing what they are doing both in the Western and Asian scenes. They made music interesting again. I started out listening to and playing alternative rock, hard rock, and so on. Then moved to producing and playing dance music. So I was getting bored. Then I heard Blackpink and it opened up my ears to K-pop. But it got boring again and I tried listening to other K-pop artists, it just didn’t interest me. Then XG popped out of nowhere. I'm like, wtf is this?. The first stuff I heard from them was their Xypher. At first, I was hesitant since it’s rap, I’m not into new hip-hop. I prefer the old-school 80's to the late 90’s. And also the fact that I didn’t want to know names or who is who since there are 7 of them, too old to know names lol. I had a hard time with BP already lol. On their Xypher, they looked really intimidating and I assumed they were just another cookie-cutter K-pop group. Then after discovering Tippy Toes and Mascara. I was so wrong. They’re different. They basically combined all the genres I vibe with. Then Shooting Star came. That’s when I realized I wanted and needed to follow this group. Left Right felt old school and it solidified my interest in them. Then they keep coming up with contents like Vox (love this), Tape, and Move. It was over. Then they showed how wholesome they are by giving us Xtra days and Xtra XG. Remember, I thought they were these cookie-cutter K-pop artists. Another wrong assumption lol. XTRA XTRA made me fall in love with them and their 3 meals a day showed their colorful, loving, and chaotic personality. You can’t help but relate. They’re just very different imho. They make you laugh, smile, and cry. And watching their MV and listening to their music makes you feel good and youthful. And you’re right, our generation really wishes we are young again and you’re not the only one that’s been saying that. As if XG discovered the fountain of youth and gave it to us. XG have been my favorite artist this year I think. When I make my top 10 songs of the year in December there are going to multiple XG songs on the list for sure. The music is good, the girls are fun, the fashion is bold and fearless and breaks away from the boring “aesthetic pretty” that has been dominating lately. It’s just been so much fun to watch them kill it this year and I’m excited to see what they bring next!
28:10 I think I get you. There are a set of kpop tropes that have worked for over a decade now so they aren’t testing the boundaries of those tropes as much. It’s creative, but a limited creativity. It’s creative within some fairly rigid boundaries. I mean, I love NCT but making a song about Baggy Jeans? It’s visually and aurally appealing but…it’s about pants. It’s a song about pants. The pants could be a metaphor but it’s still pants and they are taking their pants seriously. The girl groups don’t seem to move boundaries even as much as the boy groups do, with some exceptions. (G)IDLE for instance. The music is generally safe and predictable and not quite as weird or fun. In my opinion, that is.
I’m loving XG. The music is good and it’s fun. I like the fun girl power vibe. They’re a bizarre mix of EXO and the Spice Girls but they manage to not sound dated at all. It sounds really fresh and interesting. And they are all so talented! OMG their voices and the charisma!

Your end commentary and feedback are so powerful. Yes XG definitely broke that mold and they define their own music which makes them unique and should stand out in the industry. I’m really hoping they will and they should. No other group or label is doing what they are doing both in the Western and Asian scenes. They made music interesting again.
I started out listening to and playing alternative rock, hard rock, and so on. Then moved to producing and playing dance music. So I was getting bored. Then I heard Blackpink and it opened up my ears to K-pop. But it got boring again and I tried listening to other K-pop artists, it just didn’t interest me. Then XG popped out of nowhere. I'm like, wtf is this?. The first stuff I heard from them was their Xypher. At first, I was hesitant since it’s rap, I’m not into new hip-hop. I prefer the old-school 80's to the late 90’s. And also the fact that I didn’t want to know names or who is who since there are 7 of them, too old to know names lol. I had a hard time with BP already lol. On their Xypher, they looked really intimidating and I assumed they were just another cookie-cutter K-pop group.
Then after discovering Tippy Toes and Mascara. I was so wrong. They’re different. They basically combined all the genres I vibe with. Then Shooting Star came. That’s when I realized I wanted and needed to follow this group. Left Right felt old school and it solidified my interest in them. Then they keep coming up with contents like Vox (love this), Tape, and Move. It was over.
Then they showed how wholesome they are by giving us Xtra days and Xtra XG. Remember, I thought they were these cookie-cutter K-pop artists. Another wrong assumption lol. XTRA XTRA made me fall in love with them and their 3 meals a day showed their colorful, loving, and chaotic personality. You can’t help but relate.
They’re just very different imho. They make you laugh, smile, and cry. And watching their MV and listening to their music makes you feel good and youthful. And you’re right, our generation really wishes we are young again and you’re not the only one that’s been saying that. As if XG discovered the fountain of youth and gave it to us. They are the fountain of youth.

Yes I agree. I'm not into Kpop but I listened to some Kpop songs because of my younger siblings. But XG really took my attention and now i'm an alphaz.
