Adding a metal top to a wood table, for welding

    I built this table years ago as an out-feed table for my table saw, but it was the only big work surface I had so I ended up using for everything, including welding. It's gotten really beat up, which has made not usable for other tasks. I decided I need dedicated tables for specific purposes. So I added some sheets of 12-gauge steel to turn this table into a full-time welding table. Later on I'll build additional tables for other purposes.

    Nice table conversion. It might surprise you what a handheld belt sander with a metal grinding belt would do for your weld seams. In my experience, just one little high spot can cause lots of cussing, when you're trying to slide your heavy, flat metal project around on the table. Nice work though, and thanks for the ideas.

    I like a couple of the build details (like the welder-clam stud underneath), but I would not build a metal plated welding table on top of wood without a suitable fire barrier first. I bet if you pulled the top of and inspected you would find all sorts of burn scars underneath. I am actually worried that one day you will find your table on fire. I hope that I am wrong though.

      btw I want to put a sheet of steel on top of my wooden table, have you had any problems with the heat on the wood so far?

      If you put a single sided hard board overlay you can do whatever you need and if you mess up the top surface, just replace the SSHB. cheaper, quick to replace and a solid surface to work on. Just a thought.

    I've been thinking about building a similar wood-based welding table .. since you posted this vid a couple of years ago, anything you'd do differently? thanks for the ideas

    I saw Colin Furze do something similar, where he made a small portion of his wooden work bench grounded steel, for welding. I want to do the same my only concern is having the plate get to hot and be a fire hazzard for the wood below. Have you had any problems with this?

      I’m not worried about it. When I was welding the plates together that did singe the wood underneath, because I was pumping heat directly into the metal touching the wood. But when I’m welding something sitting on top of the plate not as much heat transfers to the plate or the wood underneath. And I think it would be hard to set a large piece of wood on fire directly. Like starting a campfire you need kindling. I’d be more worried about splatter catching cardboard or sawdust in the area on fire. I’m always careful to clean that up. What surprises me the most about Furze is that he doesn’t set his carpet on fire… I suppose carpet is designed not to be easily flammable.

    Hey what would you advise to be the minimum thickness of the metal sheet foe a construction like this?

    • @eusonicmakes
      @eusonicmakes  8 місяців тому

      I used 1/8" thick sheet metal and I wouldn't go any thinner.

    I don't have a big shop but my centerpiece is a big flat workbench, half of which is an mft. If i were to buy steel sheet and put the same holes in it, i could just lay it on top, align the holes and use the as a welding table right?

      Sure, if you're planning to use it as a welding table permanently. If the plan is to take the sheet off when you need to use the table for woodworking I'd advise against it. It will be very heavy and will stain the wood underneath with grease, and possibly scorch marks.

      @@eusonicmakesI see. Not such a cunning plan then. 👍
