    Nice work Neil! If I were you I would get rid of the cut off saw for a cold saw, best thing I have done in my shop. they cut straighter with a nicer finish and the part doesn't get hot.

      Cold saw changed my life cutting steel. The time saved paid for itself in two days.

    • @Bob_Adkins
      @Bob_Adkins 3 роки тому +3

      I was thinking the same thing. The abrasive saws aren't saws at all, they wear and melt their way through the metal. The only downsides to cold saws are the needle-sharp bits they make, but those are preferable to fine dust settling everywhere.

    Word of wisdom to anybody building something similar - make the dropped center section deeper than your current saw and shim the saw up to flush. There are few things more irritating than buying a new upgraded saw only to realize it has a thicker base and now you need to modify your bench.

      That’s a great idea Bradley - if I do ever change the saw and the base is higher I’ll just have to wrestle the tops off and fix them back down with shims. :)

    • @nordishkiel5985
      @nordishkiel5985 3 роки тому +4

      I was thinking along similar lines, like bolting in the center section do make later modification easier.

    • @thewolfin
      @thewolfin 3 роки тому

      I was thinking exactly this when he was putting the saw in... Bad case I guess you could build a recessed tray to make the middle section sit a bit deeper (bonus dust collector!), though that would require redoing those support welds he said he added in the plans.
      And worst case, trim the saw's base down.

    Dear Neil, I always have a chuckle when you off-handedly brush past a couple of works of absolute genius as if you think that we mortals are in the same league of creative ability that you have. Your workbench for metal fabrication is simple brilliance and your jig for welding a piece of metal precisely in the Z-axis just shows your talent. To take the cake for ideas however you can’t go past the idea of a single bolt to allow rotation of the cutoff saw. Anyone who has struggled to cut their steel @ 45˚ would appreciate the sheer simple elegance of your idea Neil. I’ve not seen neither elsewhere that you show in your incantation. Well done. Merry Christmas.

    Awesome build. I've been building all of my shop furnishings out of galvanized fence posts and Steeltek fittings. No welding required, and if I ever move, all I gotta do is unscrew the fittings and the whole thing comes apart. I've built my work bench framing out of it, and topped it with a solid core external door for the worktop. I built my shelves and other odds and ends out of it as well. Steeltek makes for an incredible metal frame system. But yours is so much better in nearly every possible way. What a beauty of a build.

    Beautiful work as always. Other commenters are saying to get a cold saw too. I highly recommend the Makita LC1230 because they’re cheap and they cut quietly and fast. I put one to work making a flat-strap on end finishing table for our shop requiring over 400 precision cuts. After that project I made another roll around drying rack requiring another ~100 cuts. The blade is still just as sharp as the day we bought it. I don’t fully understand how they work, but I’m perfectly happy believing that it’s magic ✨💫

    Great work as always.
    If I may make a suggestion for your 'plans', and anyone else that might use this idea, is to add and inch or so to the size of the steel bench top peices, and then bend down over all the edges, and weld the corners. As you have exposed screws on the side anyway from the steel flat bar, and then siliconed the top edge, my suggestion would I believe make it look a little bit better, and perhaps save some time. It might also prevent the need to glue the sheet down, just in case they require replacement.
    Just an immediate thought as I was watching your vid. Keep up inspiring us all.

    Great work as always. I also use the angle-iron method to find my saw's proper cutting distance. The only difference is that I just flip (carefully) the angle-iron, clamp it, and use it as the guide for the saw. It saves me a bit of time, & once you get used to it, it gets much faster/easier to use. When I get a place with a garage, I'm going to totally order some of your easier plans.

    Thank you for another delightful practical project that's a joy to watch with your skills. Having built many factory-setting workbenches, I have a preference for a 50mm round corner on the outside of steel tops at hip height. Just too many bumping injuries moving heavy items. I look at those very sharp outside points and think about some idiot-proofing. This is similar to the trip hazard comment I made moving the bolt down ties under the bench on your anvil when you built that. I'm so delighted you share with us. :)

    Great project! As you mounted the saw, towards the end, I said he doesn’t need that chain anymore and sure enough you had taken it off lol.

    It's inspiring to see your shop growing and growing from where it was at the very beginning.

    Merry Christmas Neil, another excellent project to round out the year. Some of the small details on this workbench are just excellent, the likes of the catches not being magnetic to avoid filings being attracted just shows how you're always thinking ahead, a real pro.
