I love these sort of videos. To me it's much more interesting to see the thought process that goes into solving real problems in production, rather than pure technical how-to. Please don't stop :)
Our Guru 🙏
You love these... I love you.
It's so much easier to say this when you are already good at the technical part
@@ainaopeyemi339 you don't have to be good, you gotta understand it, you will be good with time, let's say you want to model a car, seeing how people model cars gives you a insight in how they are thinking so if you want you can apply to yours
@@kendarr but when you don't know the complex tools how do you want to get the insight working
This man is the embodiment of passion! Keep them coming!!
Lots of swearing while angirly googling is my standard for all my working processes
Are you a programmer, too?
5:02 oh... so the ponysmashing was literal ... cool
I am not even into blender..but i cant miss a video from ponysmasher..every min has to be watched
5:02 Okay, that caught me by surprise
Thanks for continuing to make these!
This guy is simply the best. He can literally do it all himself.
To be a hollywood director and yet still find time to share your knowledge with us aspiring directors can be described no simpler as one of the kindest things ive seen in years from someone in your position, it wont be forgotten anytime soon by me, thank you!
1:12 - looking up Philadelphia Art Museum.
Shazam's 2019 run starts in a Philadelphia museum (though it's museum of American Revolution, not Art). Adaptation of 2019 arc with Seven Magic Lands CONFIRMED.
Damn, interesting catch.
I was thinking about Dedouze as soon as you mentioned Blender, so seeing him get a shoutout made me light up like a firework!
Thanks for sharing! Blender just keeps getting better
thankssss for the outline idea i absolutely love it
I've never been this early; I really love your videos! You're one of my favorite directors, and I find it cool you still upload new content.
Blender is amazing and you‘re making great use of it!
Your way of explaining things is great I love it.
Holy macaroni, this is timely for me! Turning a 3D object into line art is exactly what I have been thinking I'll use in my next client project, and I have been pondering hiring a 3D person to do it. Looks like I can swing it myself. Thanks for all the other stuff too. Thank you so much for being so generous and sharing your process and knowledge!
Thanks for giving time for such videos for us. 🙏🙏
Wow. Thanks for sharing, as always
I just started using Grease Pencil in Blender last Month. The Tutorial with the juice box was also really helpful for me.
Everyone should keep in mind that Blender is a 3D Software in the first place and that the Grease Pencil is build around that. You are not drawing with pixels, but with points in 3D space. Every Point has information for the position, the thickness, the strength and material of the stroke. That can be a little bit difficult for people who use Blender for the first time, but for long time users of the software it is a great tool.
I'm insanely impressed with that you share so much of your process while remaining humble. Thank you so much!
Dang, great inside peak David. Much appreciated.
I like your goal of always finding the fastest way to get ideas out of your head, thanks for sharing this.
Very well done and informative video! Keep it up!
Very cool! Thank you for sharing!
I'd LOVE to see more actual animatics in the future once you are free to release them.
Also thanks for turning me to Blender and showing the awesome sides and the WTF sides in equal measure.
You are a god, thank you for these videos
Converting geo to grease pencil is such a useful tip! thanks
Exploring different option for storytelling through twitch/livestreaming and you're blowing my mind, man! So many rad tools for an an amateur filmmaker/storyteller to mess with!
Wow, the flyover of Phili actually made my travel sickness kick in lul great video
He genuinely shares the most useful film stuffs that you can't find anywhere except here
Thanks for making this content! I’m personally not creative, though I wish that I was and watching your use of these tools has been inspiring me to try things out.
Really cool; thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your videos man, They're always super informative and inspiring!
This man is one passionate artist.
I didn't expect a blender tutorial from you, your videos are so quick and practical. Anyway, great explanation!
Oh shit, i just started using Blender as well. And BTW, I suggest searching up the creator of a cartoon called A Fox in Space. He doesn’t give away much of teaching Blender, but since his switch to the software he’s been doing some cool stuff. Chill guy as well.
Aww yeah, His Blender animations have gotten a lot better since he switched over. Super excited for Fox in Space episode 2.
Found him describing and showing his process here: www.twitch.tv/videos/822026380 at the 2:12 mark.
Low poly 3D models for lighting that's blurred and put on top of grease pencil
i spent a long time learning to use blender to find out I suck at and hate modeling so this seems like a better use of this resource!
Hello David, I promise I have never realized directors do animatics, comtrol sound recording, edit sometimes and .... i just learned it by watching this channel, thank you for the informative content
You have so much passion and for me you talk very well and very clearly. It makes me think that your not an introvert at all lol. Anyway... I'm loving all your videos
this is amazing
I love this man! I'll try it out in the next project
great, these are gold tricks my friend
1:53 Sick Golf GTI! I recognize those wheels any day.
Thank you for the tips.
Your content helps inspire me to pursue my dream of filmmaking!
Love you!
so cool. Thank You 💝
I`m starting to make a storyboard for a new project. But this tool has been very useful in the past for several projects, I`ve used it to make annotations over video and "animation playblasts" helps a lot for cinematography, animation and dailies reviews.
I just started to learn Blender. Like you said, it makes me suffer a minor stroke, but days later, what was once an ordeal becomes a pleasure. It's like learning a language.
Woww this was brilliant! Just started off on Blender after years of using sketchup for my architecture degree... Will definitely give the Grease Pencil a go
I have used Solid Works, Creo, Inventor and NX for years but I'm just starting to get into Blender. It's so different. I'm excited about it though!
You can import sketchup files directly into Blender, no need to convert or use Sketchup. You’ll need to enable the SKP Imort add-on in Preferences, it comes with Blender by default.
by blender secrets
You are my idol man. Looking up to be a filmmaker like you honestly.
By the time i was drooling over the wonderful video, it was over..!!! Please smash more ponies mister. Loved your presentation. Absolutely to the point, No non sense. Thanks
Enjoyed this was so informative.
Didn’t expect to see dédouze, he’s rad
There are also plugins for bringing Google Earth models into Blender. If you ever need that workflow.
Didn’t know about that. I knew there are ways to capture google maps data but it seemed really complicated last time I looked.
@@ponysmasher There’re several steps, but it's not too bad. And of course the models are extremely low poly. I grabbed the Queen Mary from LBC and it's not good for too much more than a flyover. Still, it's nice to know it's there if you need it.
Directors of real movies reaching down from the seemingly mythical land of Hollywood to make UA-cam videos periodically is most enjoyable. Very excited for the next Shazam.
I must know what thrilling motion picture features this man bobbing up and down adjacent to his friend while an onlooker observes from his car.
currently studying blender from blender guru. I will check out Dedouze after. Thanks!
so great knowing a hollywood director uses blender!!!
You're the one guy in hollywood I'd like to work with given the opportunity, such a chill, cool smart dude.
It is amazing!
Dedouze does great tutorials on this
I had no idea you used blender for your movies. This is really fascinating and a little inspiring.
Love these videos. Keep them coming :D
I only played around with Blender a few years ago but damn Blender has come a long way.
Looks way better I just wished the way you interact with it to be more like the other 3D programs Blender is too different, I would need to search every basic function again
Blenderkit is what you need! Free assets, directly as an add-on for blender!
I'm making my first studio short film and also decided to make some animatics in Blender. It's amazing!
Great video! When it comes to making fast, accurate animatics, I strongly recommend you to try the app ShotPro (the desktop version in particular). Once you try it it's hard to look back (and I'm one of those who loved drawing my own storyboards combined with 3D SketchUp made backgrounds).
We, the people, hereby demand a feature-length shazam movie of just the animatics
Thank you for your awesome videos, this one hyped me up to try animating 2d as well in blender. But mainly I wanted to say: I just watched Shazam and holy shit its awesome!
LMAO!! I am trying to make my first ever animation. Honestly, the Onion skin part actuallllyyyy, it felt like you stalked me to see how I struggled to see it. I was all over the place, NO ONION SKIN, again NO ONION SKIN. I was so frustrated, until I found Dedouze do it.
It's great seeing Blender become more and more mainstream in use, especially in Hollywood. Couple of things: there's no need to do so many steps when converting objects to Grease Pencil. Just select the edges you want as line art and mark them as (UV) seams. Then in the little black menu that pops up in the bottom left hand corner when you convert, check "Only Seam Edges". You can also uncheck "Export Faces" if you only want the outline.
Quick tip: for more complex objects, select the whole object in edit mode and hit "Clear Seam" in the edge menu (in case there are any), do a cube projection (or smart project with the angle limit cranked to max, either's pretty good) from the UV menu, go to the UV editor, select all UV's, and hit "Seams from Islands" in the UV menu. The result can be a little rough when you convert to GP, but you can always manually adjust the seams before conversion.
Other thing, you should check out the GIS addon. It's free and allows you to kitbash, so to speak, anything from Google Earth straight into the 3D scene.
Thanks for the tips!
Riktigt fräsigt
I'm so glad to see someone who had all the same problems as me lol
...so THAT'S what happened to my onion skin! Thank you for the awesome tips and expletive reduction.
Thanks so much for the link share in the description. I also keep my duplicated of geo that I convert to gp , so I can still get shadows. Would be good to chat sometime. Google earth thing looks great.
I'd like to see you make an animated horror film one of these days. I think that would be awesome.
Animation is super complex and time consuming, especially 3d, i would love to see it too, but idk of he has the time for it
I’m not even good at drawing but still enjoy watching these lol
good vid
Thanks, dad
After Shazam 2 are you thinking about stepping back into horror? I'd love to see another feature-length horror of yours! (Horror sci-fi?) Keep up the good work!!
This is amazing! Now all I want is to see what you can do with CineTracer!
2:55 is the most accurate thing that I did while doing my animation project
sketchfab has a blender plugin that you could browse and import free models :) i usually use it if i need a quick city backdrop or some kind of room area.
JÖNKÖPING!
Tq for sharing. I want to one day make a movie too
Can we get an update lol, grease pen got even better recently!
tha ending lol
Yeah yeah this is all good but I want to know why that old man is doing that dance... Can we have a video on that? Keep up the good work Ponysmasher
Lapiz grasoso 😁
I'd probably use Blender's Grease Pencil animation in 3D space thing for more complex camera movements. Such as a lot of Anime nowadays.
Are we getting 12 days of Christmas with awesome blender tutorials, right now?! :D
I'll be honest, I find Blender ultra intimidating. Maybe I'll come around to it some day. But I've been using a new program called CineTracer. It's still in beta, and it costs a bit, but it is so easy to use!
Can you do a video giving tips and pointers how to communicate better with the production. I'm a film student and everytime I'm with actors/production team, I just can't seem to express myself to them and how to direct them. I seem to lack enough confidence to enforce my vision. I'm such a shy person and I have constant fear of upsetting people.
00:27 the guy have some balls 😂
Clicking like for the Philly references
you can also extract 3d models from google earth and import them into blender! it's a while ago i did it so i need to search for the tutorial again, but just wanted to drop the info, that this is possible!
I hope it’s changed since I looked into it, but AFAIK sadly, google earth studio is not available for commercial use, so keep that in mind. Only educational and personal use right now I believe.

Welcome to the Hydraulic Ponysmashing Channel...
3:00 just imagine you helped the guy Who directed Shazam in a way you helped shazam
