The guy noticed it had an aftermarket card and wanted to yoink it, then buy a cheap low-end card, unless it had integrated graphics on the MB, he could always just turn it back in through the bios and not buy anything.

I'm being doing PC repairs since 1995, never ever took a dime for a obvious problems such as push back the card(ram memory, graphics card or hard disk) into the slot. Never ever take a customer part and swap it with worst one, also never ever take somebody else's components. I am charging only for my time that i spend coming and detecting the problem and its not a big fee. if i detect the real problem on the spot then i am taking the machine with me into my repair shop. If i found that only take me to move back card, ram or cable back that's fine with me and i will go home happy that i did in on the spot. But that's just me.

Shame really most people don't even know enough about their PCs to be able to fix the basic faults.
I find it hard to believe that most drivers know to replace the engine oil or do a jump start when the ignition fails , but most computer users aren't even familiar with the functions of their BIOS along with its beep codes.

to be fair, it's not possible to come to the conculision that the gfx car has been pulled out of the slot. When customer says computer just died I too would assume the bios has failed or ram has failed. Some mobos wont post without any ram.
I would not assume that the gfx has been pulled out because the gfx bracket and clip on fastener is designed so that it doesn't accidently come out once fitted. It stays in place unless someone opens the case and removes it. Obviously client does not give any indication they opened the case and meddled with it.

    • @causetheplumstasteyum7848

I am not a PC repairman but I know what is required. To fix a PC, you need to first inspect it so all you need is your eyes, no tools are required. Often, the fault lies within the software rather than hardware so again, no tools required. It makes no sense to bring a toolbox without first inspecting the PC.
If hardware is to blame, new hardware needs to be purchased, no toolbox needed for that job, not until you get the new part, then you may need a screwdriver, that's about it!

  • @Flamestar1989

@enzomaidana You're wrong, most of us aren't. When it comes to pricing, it can cost £60 for removing malware but you're forgetting that we have to make a living as well as pay for overheads and staff if we're running a shop. You'll find that trainee technicians like myself are generally more reasonable because a lot of us don't have our own place to pay for and we want to establish a customer base.

He's charging a massive amount but then he's also taking the high performance parts out of this computer, so he could've made about 500 on it. I can't believe that he actually thought he'd get away with this, eventually he was always going to get caught. Car mechanics do this all the time... they offer the most lucrative solution rather then fixing the simple things first. But you have to be sensible. And not using a wrist-strap to protect against ESD, how criminal! lol

The saddest part is, its actually very simple to build/update computers nowadays. with a little bit of basic knowledge and confidence its no more difficult than a lego set.I've only been at it for about 2 years and have already built three systems from scratch with no formal training. Arseholes like this baffle customers with tech talk. half of what he was saying was total bullshit. The chances of a graghics card frying through an electrical surge and taking a ram chip with it is very remote.

If you want, you can have a power supply tester with you as well.In my 15 years of practice I never had a problem with cables and with a right screwdriver you can check the cables as well, or carry a spare power cable with you in a car.

Tyrone Nelson A more professional manner would've been him doing his job correctly and just pushing the GPU back in place when he surely spotted it. Professional would've been doing real testing instead of telling the woman a false story in order to take the computer away so he could wantonly steal parts and replace them with cheaper, inferior ones for no reason other than greed.
