Supernatural is one of the most unhinged and yet innovative shows of all time. This show is a horror, drama, tragedy, and comedy all in one package. Tell me a show that can pull this stuff with a straight face and get away with it?! We haven't even gotten to the most meta it will ever get.
Gabriel's reveal was so amazing. It was not planned out at all with his other appearances but if you look back at Mystery Spot with allt he knowledge dropped in this episode it works out SO WELL. They had to do the Grey's Anatomy parody because JDM was huge on Grey's and his 'ghost' storyline was what was playing out at the time LOL. Dean's face when he spots Dr. Sexy is one my fav Dean expressions.
Honestly Dean is more like Gabriel than Michael. Both are the funny ones in the family, cracking jokes to lighten the mood even if it's with dark humor. Both have a sweet tooth. And both of them, despite loving their families so much, are often overlooked by their family members. Despite Gabriel clearly hating God, he didn't go against him when he was around, just like Dean never went against John or even tried to have a life of his own. And even if Sam did so full dark side it's clear Dean would never kill him or try to fight him, just like with Gabriel, he knows both his brothers are in the wrong but he can't bring himself to stop either of them, which is why he goes after human who remind him of them. All the Tricksters victims were men who were arrogant, thought themselves above the rest and tortured people mentally or physically. That's why what Dean said to him at the end was so powerful. He wants Gabriel to do what he never could, stand up to his family and choose his own path.
I kinda love your reaction here of irritation when they reveal the Trickster element right away - but it's really kind of ingenius, isn't it? Because that is not the big reveal for this episode. That's not the twist. They make that clear from the very beginning - and it makes the ACTUAL reveal so much more effective
How to tell a classic Supernatural episode. It starts off with laughs and humor than doves straight into the dark and serious towards the end Mystery Spot, Yellow Fever just to name a few
Finally! One of the best episodes of the show. I can now say that my sister met Richard Speight Jr. (Gabriel) and he was the sweetest human. She got to tell him that she named my nephew Gabriel because of his character. He was so touched. He said nobody had ever done that before. Literally an angel. Just not the evil murderous type from the show😂
9:07 the ghost character on Dr Sexy is a parody of an actual Grey’s Anatomy character… played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan! 26:00 there was a running joke that they wanted to end TVD with a single shot of the impala rolling into town 😂
2nd trickster episode that just blew me away! What a twist. You can take what Gabriel says about the boys’ roles, and apply it directly to the pilot episode. You think they’re just setting up surface level conflict between the brothers, and then you get this huge payoff in season 5. I love it.
I comment in the “Mystery Spot” reaction that their was major foreshadowing, and now we know what the Trickster meant and how he knew it. Makes you wish the brothers would’ve heeded his words more
YES, we have arrived at THE episode! Changing Channels is such a fan favorite, they rated it the second-highest on the IMDB for the series. Some additional tidbits: - CSI and Grey’s Anatomy (GA) were chosen because they are Supernatural’s timeslot competitions. They are such monster hits and SPN is the Japanese businessman cowering beneath Godzilla and Mothra, Eric Kripke said. “We're just trying to dodge debris. So it felt right to take out a slingshot and take a few shots at those shows.” Knight Rider was chosen as he loved the show as a kid in which cars were characters. - The music in Grey’s Anatomy’s portion was done by the same person who worked on GA, that was why the mood music was so on point. They share the same music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas. - Johnny Drake is parodying Jeffrey Dean Morgan aka Denny Duquette, who was also a “ghost” in Izzy’s mind. Sam’s “This show has ghost? Why?” is forever funny as he is referring to his father as the ghost lol. - Also another SPN/GA connection, Jensen had played the boyfriend of Patrick Dempsey, aka McDreamy, in another movie, Blonde. - By the way, I think the sandwich in the sitcom is referencing Scooby Doo, and I do hope Dean able to have a bigger mouth to enjoy it offscreen, it looked delicious. - In the CSI Miami portion, I so enjoyed that they threw shade at David Caruso, his one-liners, and then exited the screen/camera lens because that was the reason I cannot get into that series, it was so fake and cringy. - In the game show portion and the commercial, Jensen had talked about how he was so happy that this time, Sam is the one getting all the hits because in prior episodes normally Dean was the one they are poking fun at. Also, Jared talked about being so nervous about the giant pin that is the nutcracker, he put a cup on there. I so loved the Trickster reveal as Gabriel, that is how you do a retcon, it doesn't conflict with any previous canon. In fact, I find that it only enhances the story, makes it even more interesting. Previous questions of why is he so personally invested in the Winchesters? Why does he care? This helps fill in that gap. Why he wants Sam to accept Dean’s death in Mystery Spot, and not be consumed with revenge as it will lead to the apocalypse.
Sam has no room to talk about Dean loving a hospital show, when he was all into a real life popular tv drama show called All My Children (similar to General Hospital) with Madison in season 2 😂 In the show All My Children, Kendall (real character) really did get with Ethan's father Zach.
not only did Grey's Anatomy have the JDM connection it was also in the same time slot as Supernatural for years. CSI Miami was I think too. I loved this one sooo much, it helped I am a big Lou Ferringo(as the Hulk) fan and Knight Rider as well. . The trickster is always fun and I really like the broadening his character.
The movie style my family calls movies that Lou Ferrigno is in, meat cloud movies. The kind that when someone throws someone else out a window, first they put a grenade inside their shirt and when it goes off, the camera angle is from below.. meat cloud! Was this when Grey's Anatomy was on? Yes, yes it was and in seasons 1 & 2 of SPN, Jeffery Dean Morgan was on both shows.. filming in different countries.. he was one sleepy actor those years. I really dig the one-offs.. both boys really play into the comedy well.
Not sure if someone said it but the shows they choose to be on this episode were all on the same night supernatural was, they were mocking the other shows, lol.
Top 3 episode imo. Hilarious from start to (almost) finish. “I… have genital herpes…” lol. Then it gets serious with the awesome Gabriel twist! So great.
Richard Speight Jr. directs several episodes of this show and 'Lucifer', including the pentultimate. As a native born NE Ohioan though, I have to complain about the line "high country". My uncle & aunt lived in Wellington OH for a number of years. It's all farmland. Everything west of Cleveland is basically flatland.
Def a fav ep of mine that I can always circle back to on a bad day. Also Sam's side burns get even crazier later on I can't wait for u to see them lmao.
This is one of the ones I was excited for as soon as you started your SPN reactions! Definitely this is one of the episodes that really shows what Supernatural is.
Jeremy, there was this fantastic Teen Wolf and Supernatural crossover fic I read that had Stiles Stilinski as the vessel of Gabriel … so much sass and snark.
1:29 that brand of beer was the same brand that sam pranked dean with in season 1 by putting glue on the bottle. It's a fake brand but still it is nice to see it being used consistently.
I love how they keep blaming Sam and dean for letting Lucifer out but then saying other times that god is the one making everything happen like they all knew it'll end with them always ends with this battle lol so is it really their fault or is it gods cause HR could have not had this happened especially how many times have they done this do something different lol
The shows they're parodying is the shows that are competing against them on same time as them lol why is he asking why there's ghosts on this hospital show don't he remember in my time of dying lol Madison the werewolf lol heart episode lol
You won't like me when I'm hungry you won't like me when I'm hungry lol Norton one had good moments like the newer one better they both better than banna lol

Dean's face when he spots Dr. Sexy is one my fav Dean expressions.
The Dean/Dr. Sexy scene I'm pretty sure was a nod to the tv movie Blonde. And the fact that Jensen and Patrick Dempsey have worked together before.

Gabriel with a serious face glaring at the brothers was certainly a chilling moment.
16:01 I've seen this episode so many times, and this is the first time I've realized this was Jensen's voice reading out the side effects lmaooo
This is one of my all time favorite supernatural episodes! I'm so happy we're finally here!

Oh Jeremy, you think you know but you’re still in for a surprise.
This episode was a real channel changer!

Yeah, yeah. I'll see myself out.

LOL
Sam has no room to talk about Dean loving a hospital show, when he was all into a real life popular tv drama show called All My Children (similar to General Hospital) with Madison in season 2 😂
In the show All My Children, Kendall (real character) really did get with Ethan's father Zach.
Thank you! Finally a reactor that doesn't like Sam's sideburns 😂. They're a pet peeve of mine.
Why are they like that lol
@@JerBearReacts he did it himself

They got everything in this show so many formats supernatural sitcom supernatural musical there's no limits lol
This is one of the funniest episodes of the series in my opinion. I also loved the Gabriel reveal and explaining more about the brothers destinies.

Awesome episode, acted out masterfully by Jared and Jensen. Sam and Dean rule! :)
Love this episode! But just saying the video you watch is always lower than you but that could also be my phone.
