- Jelly Roll Quilt Tutorial - This is a great beginners quilt because there is no measuring, the strips are already cut for you and the quilt top comes together really fast.
In this video, we show you how to create a jelly roll race quilt top but it doesn't have to be a race. You can still get this done in a day quite easily even if you are a beginner. This is a super easy quilting pattern so give it a go.

I can not tell you just how much I appreciate this video. Others that I have watched didn't explain the "twisting" of the fabric although I was thinking it in my mind. I am very new to quilting and sewing. I just finished my first quilt that I made for my first granddaughter born 4 weeks ago. I was very proud of myself. Although it was an easy 5" sq blocks, I put a binding on it and I also free hand stipple quitted it. The size came out to be 44-1/4"x45-1/2". Now I want to make my son a twin size jelly roll quilt to take to college with me this fall. With the help of your video I now know I can do it. Again thank you for explaining the important tidbits right to the end. :)

Honestly this is such a wonderful tutorial - I have ordered a jelly roll to make my first quilt, and have seen so many tutorials that make no sense at all to a beginner quilter like myself. Good Morning from Texas, ( 8-21-15/9:00am cst). Wanda I have 2, 20 strip jelly rolls to make a top. Is the top done after 32 rows have been stitched? Loved, loved, loved the video. So glad I don't have to stitch at a 45* angle. I like the effect even better.

Yes Patricia, your quilt top is complete once your 32 rows are done, unless you want to add borders as we have done on the autumn toned quilt. But if you are happy with the size then you can just add your batting and backing and finish the quilt. Again you can just use our easy quilt method (without binding) or you can bind the quilt and finish using your favourite quilting method. - free motion quilting or stitch in the ditch. We prefer the straight joins as well.

Happy we were able to clear that up for you. Don't beat yourself up, things are not always obvious, and that's why it's important to mention what we are doing so everyone understands the process. I love making jelly roll quilts, you never quite know what they are going to turn out like. 🙂

Love your videos! I am brand new to quilting and you explain everything so well. If you wanted a queen size quilt would you use 2 jelly rolls? I also like that you use the straight stitch. The 45 degree one seemed very daunting!

The quilt top with just the jelly roll strips will be approx 54 1/2" x 62". You can add to the size by adding borders. The brown quilt top in the video, with borders measures 72" x 80".

Happy New Year to you too!! We made a few of these. Not all are quilted yet but for two of them we had them professionally quilted. If I were to quilt this myself, I would probably either stitch in the ditch along each row or stitch on either side of each seamline although that may be a bit of overkill. I'm not sure what you mean when you say 'how do you know it's the last row?'
I love this tutorial. So easy to follow. I am going to attempt my very first one soon. My question is do you think it would be alright to quilt the top, batting, and back together using the 'stitch in the ditch' method? I have never made a quilt and that looks like something I could do. What do you think?
+Alex Smith Hi Alex. Thank you for your comment. I can't see any reason why you can't use the stitch in the ditch method to put your three layers together, once the top is finished. Make sure you pin everything well to keep it stable or use an adhesive spray. I love this! Without any additional border do you think this would make a quilt large enough for a queen size bed?
No, it's a bit small for a queen size. It barely covers the top.
Alanda Craft if you remove less than 18inches at the start would that help it be larger in the end?
I am wondering, if I wanted the quilt bigger could I just add more strips?

It wouldn't be possible to add a panel using this technique. To add a panel to a quilt is a whole different method. You would have to sew your strips together and then cut them to sew them around the panel.
Thank You for this amazing tutorial!!! --- I have done a tiny bit of quilting and I really love the fact that this is so easy and looks so beautiful. I read where you said the finished quilt top is approx. 53" x 63"--- that is larger than the fabric that you buy, so when your doing the backing and batting how do you get enough fabric to be this size? Do you have to sew pieces together to get it large enough? I looked for a video you might have on this and could not find one. If so then you will have a seam on the back instead of a solid piece of fabric? I'm thinking of using cotton fabric for the front and flannel for the back -- do you think this is a good idea and do you think the flannel will shrink when washed and make the quilt uneven? Also, do you think a batting would be necessary if I use flannel for the back? I'm sorry for so many questions but I do appreciate your time and help --- Love watching your videos --- so very easy to understand and follow --- Thanks again ---- Blessings
Backing can be purchased in wider widths than most quilting fabric, but if you only have narrow quilting fabric you will need to join the pieces together. So yes you will have a seam on the back. We have a number of quilts like this and you will need to decide if you want the seam to run across the quilt or down the quilt. Once it's quilted you probably won't see the seam anyway. You aren't restricted to using just one fabric for the back either. Take a look at what we did for the backing for one of our quilts, here www.alandacraft.com/quick-tip-how-to-use-up-those-spare-quilt-blocks/. We used a number of different fabrics to get the right width. Batting generally comes in wide widths but if yours doesn't then you can get a fusible tape to join the batting. If you have any doubts about your flannel shrinking then just wash a piece before you use it and measure it for shrinkage. As for the batting, it depends on how warm you want the quilt to be. I would personally use batting but it's not essential. Without batting you will have more of a blanket feel than a quilt. Can I use anti-pill fleece as backing and turn it inside out like you did on the easy quilt and stitch in the ditch with a straight stitch or stretch stitch?
Yes, you can definitely put it together using that method.
I just made my first top... now if only I knew how to complete it...
Perhaps add a border. Maybe a 2" plain border and a 4" patterned border. Depends how big you want it to be. Add some batting and backing and quilt it or have it quilted. Would love to see photos of your quilt top or finished quilt. www.alandacraft.com/submit-your-project/

Great video help! I did my first jelly roll quilt and it didn’t turn out right. I opened the roll and separated the duplicate strips so they weren’t side by side. Somehow at the end, they were literally all grouped together. I have no idea how that happened. I bought another jelly roll but it has about three strips of each pattern? Do i keep them together?
It's hard to know how this type of quilt is going to turn out beforehand. Personally I would separate the strips but there is always a chance that you will end up with two of the same pattern next to one another, and as you have three of each in your jelly roll, it is even more likely that this will happen. I'm sorry I can't be of more help Shannon.

I want to know how you iron the quilt at the end..... do you open seams or press in one direction?
+nmdan4 We ironed the seams open but you could probably get away with ironing to one side.
My first jelly roll quilt...it has only 8 fabrics with 5 of strips of each fabric. Will this still work as far as duplicates to just stagger them in stack?
You will more than likely get a number of double ups by having so few colours. Staggering them through the stack may help but because of the construction of the quilt you will have duplicates. But that will probably look awesome anyway as you may end up with blocks of colour.

I have never made a quilt before, I’ve only sewn shorts or costumes for my kids and that was 25 years ago..would this quilt be ok for me to begin with?

I want to use fleece as backing with no batting (it's more of a blanket for a 8 year old and I don't want to make it too heavy.......do you suggest pinning or spray basting?
Personally I would do both. Fleece will be a little more difficult to work with so the more you stabilize everything the better.
If I do the easy quilt with no binding (where you turn it inside out) I'm guessing I won't be able to use spray basting.
QUESTION: Have watched this several times now and have just noticed that at the beginning, when you trim the selvages off, you place all your grey colors on top, and the duplicate grey you place at the bottom of that grey pile. I've been doing that, kind of, but placing them at the bottom of all the colors. My way, I've been joining up the last grey with the first grey when I stitch.
Can you confirm that you put all like colors together for the full 160 inches, giving a better color spread. I've made several jelly roll quilt tops and always end up with same colors lumped together at 3 or 4 places.....
You are going find that regardless of how you sort the colours, you can still potentially end with the some colors lumped together. Some people mix the strips randomly, some don't sort them at all.
When we go through our jelly rolls, we only separate duplicates and we do it exactly how we showed in the video. So if we saw a duplicate grey we would place the duplicate to the bottom of the grey pile. If we saw a duplicate pink we would place the duplicate to the bottom of the pink pile.

I apologize if you answered this already, but where did you get the ruler you use...it seems like when you press down there are wood pegs that go through holes to extra hold the fabric...is that right? Where did you get that? the link you gave did not have the handle.

What size is the quilt using the 42 jelly rolls?
+Carolyn Sly Our's measured 53" x 63" without any borders Carolyn. The size may vary depending on how the seams are sewn, we used a quarter inch seam. You can add borders to make it bigger if need be.
What size quilt does one Jelly Roll make? I notice that when quilting they don't use a backstich, is there a reason for that?
+Sandi Webb The one we did for this video came to 53" x 60". You would also add a border to this if you wanted a bigger quilt. When quilting, when you are piecing the quilt top, in general you don't backstitch. This is because when you are adding sashing, a border or another block, it will cross over the seam and secure it in place.

When I attempted this quilt...I'm a beginner....I had seams on top and on bottom...not sure what I'm doing wrong. I started out 1st piece on top of 2nd piece then 2nd piece on top of 3rd piece....if that makes sense
Wish I could be looking over your shoulder to see what was happening, Jenny. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you didn't place the pieces with the right sides facing before sewing them together. Just check the video again and you will see how the pieces are placed with the right sides facing.
Just found your video. The jelly roll I have, has 2 identical strips of each fabric. The duplicate strips are moved to the end of the stack? That probably makes no sense. Do I only stitch 1 of each fabric strip, adding the duplicate strips to be sewn at the end, so that there isn't 2 identical strips sewn together? Thank you for your video.
+NG B That would be one way to do it. You could also stitch one of each of the fabric strips together then when it comes to the duplicates mix them all up and randomly and sew them on. This should give a less structured look. But honestly it is really hard to know until its done, I haven't done one with so many duplicates. But it should still look really nice by just separating the two lots of fabric into two piles and just sewing them as one pile and then the duplicate pile. Would love to see it when its completed

How many stripes do you need for a baby size quilt
I haven't made a baby quilt using this method Teri, but my research tells me that 20 strips will make a quilt that measures approx 32 1/2" x 50"
