BJJ Flow Rolling for White Belts and Rep Techniques

  • What is BJJ Flow Rolling? Is it a good way to rep Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques?
    Defining Flow Rolling is a tricky thing because people go about differently. I have a basic two part definition which is
    - You’re rolling without any intention of winning the match.
    - You’re rolling with no resistance while giving your partner a good look.
    It's an exchange of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques.
    Also, along with this, I go about rolling on a turn based system. Meaning, you go, then I go, then you go, then I go.
    So if I catch a submission. I will get to the point where I know I have it secured and could finish it. Then I release and let my partner move. This allows a back and forth exchange of techniques.
    For Spazzy white belts in BJJ. A couple of benefits for flow rolling is that it allows people to let go an over competitive nature. Because you're rolling without the intent of winning. It allows someone to learn to roll at an easier pace at times and at the same time come to grips with not winning every time.
    Another benefit is that it helps people learn the positions better because of the passive more calm nature of the training. During a full on rolling session in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The environment is intense and isn't forgiving. During a flow roll. Someone is in a much easier situation which allows them to make mistakes and tinker with the position which allows them to become more educated with the positions.
    Flow rolling has a number of different benefits to more experience grapplers as well. I focused on BJJ White Belts in the video since the question was asked from a White Belt. Again, every stage of Brazilian Jiujitsu presents unique challenges and oppurtunities. The challenge for most White Belts is learning how to relax in training and be more technical.
    So if you train Brazilian Jiu jitsu and you're wondering what the heck Flow Rolling in BJJ is. I hope this video is helpful to you.
    Also, thanks to Chris for the question!

    When you flow roll it is imperative that you and your partner keep the same slow and light pace. If one goes quicker and stronger and ends up competition rolling while the other guy is still in light mode then it gets really dangerous for the light guy.
    A brown belt who is 70 at my gym asked me to go light once because his joints were feeling extra stiff that day and I did. He smashed me but because he had great technique and knew what to do. No one got hurt or even broke much of a sweat.
    He was so grateful of this, after everyone bowed and shook hands he adresses the class that they should give me a round of applause because I showed him the level of respect that is needed for slow rolling and he barely sees that, people usually go faster if losing and it discourages him from training at his later age

    i was rolling with this purple belt and he was basically letting me flow roll. he was walking me thru techniques and it helped me a lot. it's always appreciated when the higher belts take time to work with the white belts instead of smashing us lol.

    I'm a fresh white belt and rolled on my second class. I was muscling things way to much and trying hard to just win without a single technique in my repertoire. Thanks for the video, I'll keep this in mind for next time.

    In my experience (blue belt in my 3rd year of training), we keep it at 10% strength and just catch/release submissions, never apply them. To make it really fun, close your eyes the entire time.
    And as Chewy said, it's a good way to cure spaziness.

    As usual I found this really helpful. I've found I improve a lot faster when I'm willing to try things and concede good position. I'm a white belt with about 6 months experience and I am fine with losing occasionally by putting myself into bad positions and working my way out of them.

    until seeing this video i had no idea what "flow rolling" was, Thank you!
    at very rare times i hv ignorantly gone into a state of flow rolling mindset. A mindset where domination is not the purpose, but transitions becomes the focal point. And, it's at those rare moments where I feel my opponent and I are rolling at our best.
    thank you again!

    It's great to make some of your rolls flow rolls IMO. I never used to do it - always sparred super hard. It made me a tough competitor but technically poor. Now I do some flow rolling and I get to try out my new moves and stuff I want to work on and see what others are working on that I never got chance to before and it's definitely improved my skills.

    Man this is a great substitute for one on one time with someone with a lot of valuable experience and insight. I'm glad you do these breakdowns. Really respect your approach to building a healthy sense of how to put our natural tendency to comfort our egos to good use by improving ourselves and the ones around us that we feel some sense of community with. I really think that's an important part of a good martial philosophy because if our egos are validated completely by self interest, in a martial sense, we will be isolated and vulnerable. I think that's a big reason most of us are social animals. Good martial philosophy should prioritize defending the flanks of the tribe over self esteem, because the tribe is the reason we wake up in the morning.

    I just had my first lesson today, had a blast, signed up, and all that. There was another white belt there today. He's my size more or less, but was half my age, and (surprise!) in much better shape. I could tell immediately that he was trying to roll pretty hard. It was excellent experience, but I think I would have gotten more out of it at a less aggressive pace. I'm sore from the waist up. Lol.

    I am only 8 months into my BJJ journey. Trying to flow roll (particularly in the early days) with another white belt is difficult, I think because neither of us know enough to react 'correctly' to the attacks of our partner. I remember trying to flow with a like-minded training partner after just a few months of training and it was very stunted and awkward. I am still very far from being at a truly competent level, but it is getting more fluid. It is also difficult to maintain the same gentle pace for flow rolling. Just like with 'light sparring' in boxing/MMA, it can very quickly ramp up and just become a fight! LOL!

    I think part of the issue is that classes throw you straight in. The instructor doesn’t really fill you in about what the class is going to be like, or how mentally to act when rolling. Your statement about ‘your aim should be to get into guard’ is key.
    The instructor should give the white belts a new goal to ignore submissions - if a new white belt gets guard on you, it equals a submission. If a one stripe white gets past your guard, it counts as a sub. If a two stripe white belt gets a dominant position, it counts as a sub. It eases them into positional fighting without the complexity of submissions.

    In my experience higher belts almost always flow roll with brand new white belts, it helps the white belt develop confidence and I think it should be used more often in bjj clubs. Nothing worse for confidence than getting destroyed every time you roll.

  • @Fr.Sarducci
    @Fr.Sarducci 8 років тому +1

    Chewy, nice explanation. I am that spazzy white belt. I think the biggest problem for me is knowing how hard to roll. I like rolling with the higher belts because they teach me things as we go. The problem happens when I do a move and I get resistance. So, I try harder and harder then, it devolves and I'm going like 80% which doesn't help anyone. Flow rolling sounds like a great way to teach tempo, control and sequence of moves/counters. Definitely trying this tomorrow. Thanks.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 років тому +1

      Good luck brother. Just remember if the move doesn't work during the flow roll. Either it's not going to work and you need to move on to something different, or you have a bad partner who is resisting too much.

    So I joined a new gym today as a blue belt 2 years removed. I was taught to roll by not using force for anything. If someone got your sleeves locked down, roll your wrists to break it (stuff like that). Anyway, I rolled with about three other blue belts and one brown belt from this gym and they all just threw their weight around and strong armed grip breaks. It was so weird to me to find a gym that emphasized power and pressure AS a technique. I’m not saying it’s wrong, and I’m super interested to integrate it into my more defensive JiuJitsu, but I didn’t think there were places that advocated for hard rolling after every class. Is this common in the BJJ community?

  • @ericcollins6231
    @ericcollins6231 7 років тому +1

    Hey Chewy, I have question, perhaps it could make a good video lol. Around @4:41 you mention the idea of getting kimuraed as good being feedback to keep your arms off the mat, and rather on your opponent.
    This was something I learned in my first few weeks of starting BJJ. For this very same reason. However as I have trained, I keep hearing more and more about the idea of active posting and the importance of that. And how for me, my posting on my opponent can create vulnerability as they can better shuck me off or hip escape because I have no posting outside of them.
    And I find myself confused, should we post on our opponents body or active post on the ground? And I would love to hear your thoughts and get your feedback on that subject! Thanks for the great content man!

      joejoesr1 survive, have a clear mission when training. Brand new white belt, your mission is to survive. Do not worry about submission, that comes way later. When you start surviving your mission then becomes dominant position. Once you can establish position effectively, then your mission turns to submission. Give yourself 6mo to a year for this progress.

    I'm definitely a spazz, I've kneed almost everyone I've rolled with in the nuts trying different guard passes, and I've taken a few nasty shots in the nose from other spazzy white belts. I've tried flow rolling and it honestly just feels kinda awkward, but that may be my lack of experience.

      It takes a while, and a good partner, to find the right rhythm for flow rolling. You have to roll in a different state of mind for flow rolling.

      I'm a white belt. Learn a simple sweep or pass that goes into a submission and drill it after practice for a week with a partner. Do this every time you train because at the end of the week you've "muscle memoried" a technique. The way you can do it is 15-20 reps of the technique with no resistance and then 10 with moderate resistance. This worked for me in wrestling and has given me a few solid weapons after only a few months of bjj.

      Stick with it, it's amazing. Our stories are pretty much identical (we're pretty sure it's a PCL issue), but you've got a year on me. I found that focusing on ankle & hip mobility had more effect on the knee than the knee rehab did. It takes a while to get rid of that tentative feeling, but it so worth getting back in there.
