I think this is the most excited I’ve ever been about a song after only hearing it one time. A masterpiece. Thank you Melon for bringing me here and thank you Swans for…. whatever this album is.
Fucking wild, this stuff is going to be a decade old soon and it's (of course) classic material. The whole trilogy really, but if we're being conservative, I'd say To Be Kind and The Glowing Man are stone-cold classics and must-listen records for anyone even remotely interested in what pushing the boundary of rock music sounds like, anyone into mind expanding rock, into spiritual rock, krautrock, experimental anything, NEEDS to listen to this. You owe it to yourself. Traces of genius was already present back in 2010 with "My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky", then "The Seer" blew the lid off the whole operation. 2014 was continuous mind-blowing listens and relistens of "To Be Kind". 2016, doing it all again to even more intense levels, with "The Glowing Man". The next year "Deliquesence and one of the best live albums ever, the fact that it's debatably top 2 just in Swans' discography is crazy". And I'm still listening ~10 years on and it's still just as mind-blowing as it was the first time around. I'll be listening to these pieces of art 10 years from now, 20 years, 30 years. Guaranteed.
Absolutely my favorite Swans song. It's absolutely powerful. I've tripped on DXM listening to this song and experienced unparalleled euphoria. Thank you, Michael Gira.
I always "got" this song but then, one day... I had taken a bunch of mushrooms and I actually needed to drive someone somewhere in a bit of a pinch. I had To Be Kind on while driving to my destination and it was a totally different experience. I paused in a parking lot to be safe and appreciate what was happening and this track came up and I don't know what to say except it was like flying in an airplane that knew exactly where it was going. Soaring, sublime. Natalaaaaaaaaaaaayy. Love is strong Hate is gone Live forever In this song
I think the only band on Swans' level is Coil. Check out Love's Secret Domain, Horse Rotorvator, A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room, and The Ape of Naples.

@@R-H-B Hmmmm. I might very much disagree. It‘s great, but I don‘t think it‘s my favorite in their catalouge. Soundtracks takes the cake, followed by The Glowing Man.
hey if you are looking for new rock music and experimetal stuff, you should really check out all of the post-post-punk bands in brittain, stuff like black midi, squid and black country, new road (that's one band btw) are really refreshing to modern music.
I don’t think there’s a genre for the beginning. I also wish I could find more music like this but I feel like maybe we’d need to go to some kind of cult ritual where everyone tries to use their energy or some shit to summon a demon.
But which but-TOCK do we put our hand on Gira? Their left but-TOCK or their right but-TOCK? Or by "but-TOCK," are you referring to the plural sense of the noun i.e. both but-TOCKs? I must know this...
so i’m not trying to shit on people’s taste, but what makes u guys like the songs on this album? i saw a youtuber mention it and checked it out and personally i really don’t like it. but i’m curious as to what makes u guys like it
The atmosphere and experimentation I think. Its hard to explain, I had the exact same thoughts about it when I first heard it. It wasn't until I got really into other experimental band before I could appreciate their music. You kinda need to take in Swans songs in a different way for you to really get into it, nothing sounds quite like them and to like how dark and foreboding their melodies are in contrast with the sometimes crazy rhythms. Just approach it with an open mind and get the feel of the album. Great if you like it, but not for everyone.
Buildup, for me. It's got a lot of seething intensity before it just bursts into noise. The length of how things drag on is neat for me too, it's like having a favorite part of a song playing on for longer without having to go back to it. That, and it makes the aforementioned noise eruptions more satisfying.
It’s the build up. For the first 3 entire minutes it’s slowly building up to something, we know something coming but we don’t know what it is and we are patiently waiting. It’s like calm before the storm. And then when the drumming solo finally come, the the entire track flips on its head and now it’s intense as fuck. Girl humming, then it gets darker, and darker. I don’t really like the later part to where the guys going yayaya. But yea, slowly build up to intense as Fuk.
to me personally, i think To Be Kind is loud and repetitive garbage, that is exactly why i love it. this album is not trying to be your friend. Swans can really pull of this type of sound very well, i would say the best
I'll admit, I get that you're supposed to sink this music in but I found myself bored when I listened to it, I like the end of each song when they just go nuts but the only song I have on my playlist is screen shot
yeah I'm in agreement. everyone here is raving over this album saying it's the best thing they've ever heard and I'm just here like am I missing something? lol
Stephen Barlow dude trust me it’s a slow build but it is life changing when you focus on it. When the final song hits you experience a new level of sonic potential. Think about it like this. The album is 2 hours and 1 minute long. You can split the album into three sections. The first hour, the second hour, and the final one minute. That final one minute, because of the 2 hours before it, is one of the most insane musical moments I’ve ever heard.
@@spacejazz6272 Well, OP admits that he gets the idea, he just doesn't like it that much. And that's ok. We all have different tastes and that's why the world of music is so diverse, which is a wonderful thing.
