- After the success of Shrek, Dreamworks built up an entire world of movies set in the Shrek universe. Today we start with the first derivative work, Shrek 2. How deep will the lore go? Is the addition of characters like Puss In Boots warranted? And most importantly, is the movie itself still a fun watch? Keep watching to find out...

Shrek 2 - 2004
After returning from their honeymoon and showing home movies to their friends, Shrek and Fiona learn that her parents have heard that she has married her true love and wish to invite him to their kingdom, called Far Far Away. The catch is: Fiona's parents are unaware of the curse that struck their daughter and have assumed she married Prince Charming, not a 700-pound ogre with horrible hygiene and a talking donkey pal.

The fact that Puss in Boots got his own movie is proof that Shrek 2 left an undeniable impact on the franchise since he wasn’t introduced in the first Shrek movie but the sequel.
not only his own movie but TWO movies and a whole series lmao

We ALL know that the scene in Shrek 2 where Fairy Godmother is singing "Holding out for a Hero" is a SUPERIOR scene.
For the longest time, I thought they just put the actual song over this, so I was thrown off when I heard the original song 😂
@@ethanleung4091 Same, and it was even harder for me to realise that it was a cover when I was a kid cause Im a french speaking canadian who watched the movie in french with the song still in english, so to little me it sounded the same.
First time I actually heard the song and one of the only two movies I heard that song in (Other movie was the Mario movie)
That scene is a legendary climax. Pure cinematic investment.
low key uncanny tho
As Schafrillas once so eloquently put it, “illumination makes sequels for money. Pixar makes sequels for money. Dreamworks makes sequels for ART.
…and money too, but lord knows they need it.”
That's gold
**Megamind 2 walks in**
*Kung Fu Panda 4 walks in after*
@@OfficialMisterBoomore like sequels for fart *airhorn
DreamWorks has a lot of L movies tbf. For every how to train your dragon and kung fu panda, you get movies like flushed away, monsters vs aliens and trolls.
It's a finger bowl.
The idea is that you wash your hands between meals at the same dinner without leaving the table as it can be seen as rude to your guests.
It's something you do at fancy restaurants.
Sounds kinda gross lol
The food equivalent of paint water
Do people just wet their pants at fancy restaurants, or is going to the restroom the exception to leaving the table?
@@anth636 Well fancy meals like this usually have multiple courses, I think sometimes as many as twelve, so multiple people leaving to go wash their hands after every course would be a lot more inconvenient/obtrusive than a couple of people leaving once or twice to go to the bathroom.
@@PalisadePeryton Why is that so accurate lol
This movie is the perfect sequel to Shrek 1. It's funny, it has a great story, and most importantly, it has LAYERS.
So its like an ogre?🤔
Yeah I’m pretty disappointed that the Megamind sequel wasn’t same thing as this one
4:36 Those bowls are for washing your hands. They were very common during that period.
I only recently learned that
Had no idea about the history, yet I somehow still managed to figure out what they were.
No, hand soup
also fairly common in europe lmao this day

You guys should watch Over the Hedge. I think it’s right up your alley and it was made in that 2000s Dreamworks era where it had so many pop culture references.
ya do that
Over The Hedge was a great movie
But I love that cookie
The only things I remember about that movie is there's a bear and the Skunk is voiced by Wanda Sykes
“You wanna help me find my nuts?!”
“Sir, this is a fat friar’s, not a therapy session” - Apples Bee
Is that a rhetorical question? I feel like the answer here is I NEED A HERO!
12:22 Dragon, who was originally going to be with them in this movie, turned into a Pink Pegasus.
Apparently, kids in the test audiance were afraid of dragon or smth because of her "moodiness" due to her being pregnant, so they cut her out. She also could have easily gotten them out of any situation too easily so that was another reason why. Audience's still wanted to see Dragon however, so they added her in the mid-credits scene where she introduces Donkey to his 'little mutant babies'.
2:46 I remember seeing an edit where Donkey pops his lips, Shrek screams and a SpongeBob explosion plays
yes
🙏🏻
4:36 This is what I could find on the whole soup thing:
*Historical Origins*:
The use of finger bowls dates back centuries. In medieval England, sharing food was common, and having clean hands was essential. The finger bowl served as a practical way to rinse hands between courses.
In upper-class English culinary rituals, the finger bowl was common from the Middle Ages onward. It symbolized aristocratic splendor and cleanliness.
*Etiquette and Status*: During the early 1900s, the finger bowl was a sign of status at elite dinner parties and expensive restaurants. Its presence suggested that diners were too privileged to walk to the restroom to wash their hands.
Etiquette books from that era emphasized the proper use of finger bowls, especially for young women. It was considered an essential part of refined dining.
*TLDR*: It's a rich people thing.
The "KNIGHTS" scene is so hilarious.
They spray pepper on the white guy, brutally hold down the "black" guy, and plant drugs on the Spanish guy 😂
Who knew Shrek 2 would show ACCURATE cop takedowns
I like to think in an alternative timeline where the guys didnt look up Bob Barker and believed he had his nuts chopped off
I was only informed otherwise because of this video
Puss in boots saying i hate mondays was the scene of all time

12:28 She turned into a Pegasus. Assuming a large one, but still.
5:08 I would argue that L.A. actually evolved into far far away, as there aren't homeless people every 2 inches smoking meth through a metal tube off the ground.
Also, according to the youtube channel called the theorizer, it is in the future and he has a rough timeline of DreamWorks
As opposed to a random dinky little town in the Midwest thats gonna disappear the moment all the old people pass away and the younger people move away, yeah.
2:06 Imagine you're playing Elden Ring with mods and your main boss is a 3d animated ogre saying "get out of my swamp" and attacking you with dark magic. XD
Shrek wearing Rennala's hat would break some law of physics
I'm not sure which one specifically, but it would
In a previous draft of the movie, Dragon was going to transform into a Pegasus because of the Happily Ever After potion, but it was scrapped cause she was pregnant at the time of filming.
I’m sorry what
Is that exactly how they worded it?
“We represent all magical industries both evil and benign” is such a good line to me idk why
Filed under jokes I appreciate much more as an adult 😂
16:28 that would be unlikely, because if you were paying attention, the potion only goes into effect after the user goes to sleep that night and wakes up, so they will probably have at minimum about 18 hours no matter when they consume the potion. Consuming at 11:59PM would still place the "deadline" in the next day's midnight.
The worst part about the Mario movie is that they didn’t use the shrek 2 version on I Need a Hero
Eh, the original version is better.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 it most certainly is no...
Random theory, fairy godmother cursed feona so chaming can "resuce" her and become king without having to actually do any real hard work in that regard, and the reason she chose feona was because of her father "owing" Fairy godmother for his Happily ever after.
I don't think that's a random theory at all, I'm pretty sure that's directly what the movie says happened.
That's literally the plot. That is exactly what happened.
When did it say Godmother turned Fiona into an ogre? I only remember from the first film her saying a witch cast a spell on her.
@@Bro-cx2jc It's not directly stated. Only directly implied.
FG cursed Fiona with the ogre curse to give an excuse for Prince charming to inherit the throne. She cursed her, told the king to lock her away until a knight comes to save her, intending for that knight to be her son. That's why when Charming gets there and he's too late, she blames the King. It's a plan years in the making, and a "fat stupid smelly ogre" ruined it.
@@greatclubsandwich5612 That theory makes sense, but then why would the first movie lie?
3:35 omg the bird is still there on the ground behind them. Goated film for continuity for a 3-second joke.
Gotta love bringing out the “Unus Annus” theme for the post apocalyptic theory discussion.
I was hoping I wasn't the only one who thought that 😊
These boys need to do the Emperor's New Groove
So, here is my headcannon: Many years ago, before Shrek was born, the US got sent to fantasy world and what replaced it in our world is the land where the main Shrek series takes place. This includes mainland United States, Alaska, Hawaii, all unincorporated territories, Minor Outlying Islands, and military bases. Meaning that all over the world, there are fantasy hotspots that we have no idea about, including the former lands of the US aside from what we see on screen.

I realized that John Cleese voiced the king. As an ESO fan, I'm like, "Hmm, that voice is familiar."

Yes this movie is how to do a Sequel CORRECTLY
This movie, Empire Strikes Back, & Spiderman 2 are my go-to for showing how a sequel can be done ✔️ correctly 👏
Actually fun behind the scenes fact: they were going to include dragon in the movie but couldn’t figure out a good way to include them. The intent was to have Dragon change into a Winged Horse (I’m not calling the species pegasus, since that’s a particular winged horse)
The movie that proved dreamworks was a movie studio that would make nostalgic masterpieces or hot garbage

This is The Greatest Animated Sequel Ever Made
Agreed
The second best animated sequel is The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. The improvement compared to the original Holiday Special was amazing! Considering The Star Wars Holiday Special from the Seventies is one of the worst pieces of media ever. Another good part about the Lego Star Wars Holiday special is that it’s set after the Sequel Trilogy, which I’m really happy with. Mainly due to the lack of Star Wars content set after The Rise of Skywalker. Despite that, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is easily a 9/10! 👍
The best sequel is megamind 2
This is the greatest animated sequel of All Time

I’ve never understood Teen Titans Go. It feels like an acid trip most of the time.
@@JONOFTHEJONS my understanding is that it was made for a "younger" audience to enjoy hence all the body gags and fart jokes/ "toilet" humor, like robin having baby hands or the 5 minute bathroom bomb thing. Plus a whole lot of other junk.
14:50 What i think is that...
During WW3 many revolts happend in the union when they were also at war with Russia, France, Yemen, China, and North Korea the united states soon separated into many various kingdoms when in Europe Russia had taken Germany and Poland and Europe was close to a Chernobyl incident and then a lot of countries separated into seperate kingdoms and thats how we got this here.
