Pan by "Storm"?! This is Pan by "Tornado"!!! Every time I hear this tune I have to stop what I doing and let the force hit me. Classic, never to be repeated again and definitely up there as one of the greatest playing performances ever produced by a steel band.
I was there. Before they were halfway through I was in tears and some people began to undress. The crowd was screaming and it was a long time after before they could settle down. From the moment they started; for the full 10 minutes we all breathed as one... Amazing!!!!!!!!! It was absolutely orgasmic.!!!!!!!!!!!
This was no ordinary storm.This was a category 6 ,a Major Storm. How fortunate was I to be there to hear it and see its effects . It was pleasantly devastating and created such a storm surge that has not been repeated since by any band.That Panorama belonged to the Professor and his Elite group of Pannist.
This is by far one of the very best Panorama arrangements ever written. Melody is clear, ensemble figures/punches make sense, and every phrase climaxes to the next. This is the first time I've heard the recording from Finals. I can only imagine that the judges heard alignment problems in the performance. Jit's arrangement of Ironman is very complex and so much inner line gets lost. My personal opinion is that this was a better arrangement and will never be forgotten.

I LOVE STEELPAN MUSIC....I played steelpan music for 6 years....and i want to confess...that from the day this tune was played in the Panorama Finals in 1990....I swear that I've played it everyday since then...until they broke into my car and stole all of my CDs.....i believe that I am very qualified to make this statement because I LOVE PAN MUSIC.....THIS IS THE BEST ARRANGEMENT AND THE BEST PIECE OF PAN MUSIC EVERY PLAYED ON THE STEELPAN......Long Live KEN "PROFESSOR" PHILMORE...Long Live Fonclaire.....imagine coming 2nd by half of a point.....i know for a fact that at the end of the judging...Fonclaire was 1st...but by the time the judges got home..they were 2nd by half of a point...THIS IS THE BEST AND WILL REMAIN THE BEST PAN MUSIC EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have heard this composition thousands of times and it still gives me the chills. I think Jit won that year on rep....both bands played extremely well, but like championship boxing, the champ (jit and renegades) were rocked but were not knocked down for the count, and came back with a flurry of their own, thus the champs retained the title...it still bugs me but here's the thing...it's 2008 a full 18 years later and we're still talking about Fonclaire...now that is what I call RESPECT!!!
By half point they were beaten, when they fairly won this panorama.. and that is when I knew no south or central band could ever win in town... Those judges wanted licks😢😢
Looking forward to hearing what they have come next year for their 50th....Blessing to all past and present players...and of course the arrangers....Rudin, Wire, Professor..

I lived right down the street from them i use to love to listen to them practice. I even use to go outside, and play the drums for them, when the drummer was not their, now i am in the U S A. I must say that that year i thought they were going to win, They will never let a South ban come and win there. They took their crown, they never had another chance.
As a well rounded musician, the answer is very simple... Ask the average layman to sing or whistle a piece of both tunes today and you will know your winner... I have.. Trust me, music is bigger than the musicians who play. A classic is a song that stands the test of time, so the classic will reveal itself... The real shame of this is that another maestro was so hurt that we now have fewer masterpieces to hear from him.. That hurts me more than anything. Now we regurgitate old classics. I remember the years when a panorama tune was from the current year.. Please, somebody, everyone put a stop to this folly!!!
we need calypsonians to produce kaiso fo pan like how it used to b...caylpsonians fukn up...cro cro n dem kill calypso wit all dem bullshit dem used to sing....pan n calypso go hand in hand..bring bak d kaiso fo pan plzz
they lost because they were from south everyone knew this sad though that such things do exist= the same happened when they played ''fire down below''.
I'm very biased to this arrangement because I have been a Fonclaire fan since I was 5 years old plus Professor was my neighbour in Pleasantville and it hurts me to admit it but after listening to both Fonclaire and Renegades ..........the judges got it right Renegades just had more music in their arrangement .
time to overs this results thing its all about maths, not even judging example 90+90+90+90+90= 450 winner right 95+94+96+80+82=447 loser look at the big picture even if it is popular with the judges it still may not win depends on the maths, an actual score in a band i played with was as follows 97, 96 97, 95 ,94, 63, 66 they took off one of the highest points and one of the lowest points but with a drop of 30 points by just one judge we fell low in the results even though we were popular
If only there was a modulation in the arrangement, I strongly suspect that that may have been the deciding factor. Pro played ten minutes of music in one key,there may have been some a slight change in tonic or tonal center, not sure, but i suspect the key signature remained the same. and after all, if you listen to 'Pan By Storm" and "Iron man" back to back, it's really difficult to separate them.
dis is nice....too much effort I believe...which resulted in dem jus making noise....n too much lingering on the same melodies....n dragging it....mayb dis y dem lost...tryn to decipher btwn dem both. ...but I tink jits was better. .he varied his melodies well n paced it very very nice.......

There were actually 2 modulations in the arrangement. It went up to C# at 3:39 and then it up again to D at 6:04
