    That was a great era of pan. All the big bands were very impressive. When you go back and listen to the intricate arrangements they stand the test of time as classics of simply good creative music.

    Melody, counter melody with the cellos, tenor and double tenor runs, breaks, flair...this has it all! What a beautiful arrangement and flawlessly executed! There was some great pan from the greats that year! But this to me is the real winner!

    The development of a Musical genius like Jit Samaroo may never happen again in the Steelband Movement because the bands today lack the foresight, discipline and patience needed.
    The Renegades Steel Orchestra stuck with Jit Samaroo from 1971 to 1981without a Panorama title. Jit was given the tools and the platform by Renegades to experiment, develop and polish his musical craft without interruption until he created a brilliant formula. Then the band was rewarded with 9 Panorama titles between 1982 & 1997. They would have gotten a few more had his health not decline.
    The bands today, like society as a whole, want instant success. Just like Professional sports teams remove head coaches that don’t get them to the Promised Land within a few years, Steelbands change Head Arrangers if they don’t achieve immediate success.
    Steel Pan’s “Golden Era” is truly over. Pan’s appeal to me has diminished significantly since Kitchener’s death. I listen and watch these vintage audio/video clips of Steelband Panorama Perfomances regularly to bring back the vibes of the Glory Days…….when PAN was KING!!!

    Musically speaking renegades WON the panorama, it got some of us that just listen, & the rest of us who take notes while listening, pays attention to every musical movement in the arrangement, that’s how JIT just took the professor to SCHOOL, on a MUSICAL journey.

    • @HansumTrini
      @HansumTrini 5 років тому +3

      Renegades indeed had more changes and depth in their arrangement, giving various moods--- while Fonclaire did BLOW us away with that storm it still lacked variation and mood. That's probably why they lost but by a small margin.

    Can't be mad that Renegades won. But if they gave it to Fonclaire, wouldn't be mad about that neither :-)
    Both bands gave winning performances and it could've gone either way.

      @Curtis Betaudier Yeah, but just barely....I have to admit, Philmore createded a great arrangement of his own in that Panorama. I really enjoyed Pan by Storm very much, very creative.

    It was a toss up between Pan By Storm and Fonclair and Renegades Iron Man that year … Iron Man prevailed by half of a point and deservedly so … a brilliant piece indeed …

    A wonderful tune but no Pan By Storm , how could they win by a point, come on!

  • @acoqueran
    @acoqueran 14 років тому +5

    yeah man..the only composition to beat out Pan by Storm....hate to admit it (cause I is a south boi), but they played better, and won only by a fraction....Renegades had more changes in their compostion and the correct energy and pace...two materpieces of pan music played that year...Renegades and Fonclaire...

    The only reason Renegades won is because they stuck to the time frame of 10 minutes. Pro and Fonclaire went over the allotted 10 minutes but were far better.

    • @panfan623
      @panfan623 8 років тому +6

      +Lincoln Maitland Lincoln While I enjoyed Philmore's arrangement, it just can't compare to Jit's wonderful rendition here. The entire band is playing nonstop with intricate counter melody's throughout. So much back and forth between the sections, at a blistering controlled pace. Philmore's "Storm" doesn't come close to matching this. The steelband & music world lost a great one this month. RIP Jit Samaroo. What you & Renegades did during the 80's & 90's will live on in posterity.

      If this was a rendition of mystery band I would definitely say yes they had it without a doubt

    • @acoqueran
      @acoqueran 7 років тому +6

      Although I liked this arrangement very much and can see how they won. I am a south boy at heart and your statement "can't compare" lacks solid footing in that Pan By Storm was a pure PASSION PLAY. I argue that they compare very well...And although not as "complex" as this piece...(Renegades had maybe one or two more changes in melody and rhythm), with Prof Filmore, you must give Jack he Jacket when listening to the Fonclaire piece. Both bands played great...like Ali vs Frasier, Hagler vs Leonard....in this case Renegades won by a nose (which still irks me to this day), but understandable.

      I was there . At that Panorama, Renegades put down the most cohesive performance of the night whilst the Storm was indeed coherent. However being louder and repetitive does not necessarily mean better.
