Welcome back to the vlog. Picked up a Z900rs Cafe a couple of months ago. Loving the bike so far and everything is going along as planned with the build. Waited to get the color I wanted and for Kawasaki to work out the issues with the first few years in production.
This is an exhaust modification that costs $35. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

It’s pretty easy to drop the whole unit out and makes it vastly easier to cut pipe.
I used a diamond wheel on a 4” grinder and made it a breeze.
My cross pipe needed mods didn’t fit right but I’m a weldor so it turned out cool.
It looks great and sounds not too loud.
Drop that ugly heavy bread box out is so worth it.😊

For cutting through exhaust pipe I have a cutter that is basically plier handles with a chain on one handle and a hooked fork on the other handle. The chain has small steel cutting discs between each link of the chain. You wrap the chain around the pipe, hook on the forked end of the cutter handle to the chain, squeeze the handles and rotate the chain around the pipe. The discs cut into the pipe and in about four or five back forth movements, the discs cut right through. It makes nice clean and straight cuts. It's saved my rear many times when cutting pipe or round crap in tight places.
Sounds like an effective tool. I usually take the path of least resistance and do things correctly. To be honest I got a little stupid on this one. It was a lesson learned.

At 1st I thought " yeah never thought of keeping it on" but turns out to be more usefull as a what not to do method which in itself is excellent probably saved a lot of people a lot of time and effort,so we'll done great video .cheers from Auckland

The Z1 riders in the seventies used to switch the original exhaust into a 4 into 1. Many shops just trashed the original ones. Now they are worth a fortune.
I wanted to get a 4 into 4. They run $1500 for the one I wanted. I gotta think about that one.

I’ll be honest, I like the noise the factory OEM system makes. Not too quiet, not too loud. I know the exhaust is heavy etc etc but I didn’t buy my Z900RS for ultimate performance. I’ve done some trackdays and it didn’t shame itself. If you want real speed get a ZH2! Or hire a S1000RR at a trackday like I do!

Same could be said for the Triumph Bonneville T120 with the peashooter pipes. I had mine de catted with a Motone X pipe and some sweet British Customs Predator Pro slip ons and that bike came ALIVE! I got looks and thumbs up all the time. Yea, the Bonneville was no super sport but that low end grunt and sound sure made it fun! That's what's fun about bikes is personalizing them and doing what makes you smile!

The 900 isn't a true race bike. It's a heritage/retro that can be tracked. I would love to have one, but since I'm a poor old Man I'll settle for a Triumph speed double. As long as we are riding, that's what matters.... Just my Dumb 2 cents.....

I have a 2023 Z900 ABS (not RS version) and have been dying to do the breadbox delete. Good to see it can be done without removing the headers. I plan to do it this spring and don't want to go through the hassle of removing the headers if possible. I wonder if a sawzall with a long enough blade could get in there without hitting the engine itself. The sound after is so much better!
Honestly if I had to do it again, I'd remove the headers. It was way too much work making sure the engine doesn't get touched. It can be done but removing the headers would cut the time by a couple of hours. The sound after?, absolutely night and day. 🤙

@@russi461 that's what I did, but if you study the stock exhaust very closely you'll see Dorian did the right thing, that little diameter change gives 3-5 more hp, assuming a good flash and full airbox mod
Cheap & cheerful mod I love it. Another option is to install Delvick headers & flash the ECU, whatever fits your budget.

@speedcable if you watch the entire video, there's no difference whatsoever visually other than that big box under the bike. Everything stays the same. If anything it looks cleaner this way.
@@dorian_vlogs how much louder does it get - let‘s say at cruising speed. would you say it is screamingly loud and sticks out against most bikes. over here in europe regulations are quite strict in terms of decibel. i would want to avoid somebody pulls me over and starts measuring loudness
@speedcable oh gotcha. It's a very nice added sound under throttle. Definitely noticeable under full acceleration but cruising speed adds just enough of a growl, nothing crazy or obnoxious. Does that make sense? Go thru some if my other videos, it shows cruising sound, hard acceleration etc. Hope that helps.
Remove the header, then cat along with a proper tune to open the secondary flys. I remove them with tune , proper stacks and air box mod only, no flash. Though still heavy, I bet the stock front header section gets within 2 HP of the best header out there. DW

I left the cat in there. Eliminated the bread box and it's louder than the stock version for sure. I wouldn't go back if that makes sense. It's louder but not obnoxious. Worth doing.

I'm interested, I saw that if you cut where the solder remains an inline-cat inserted, and this seems excellent to me so as not to exaggerate with smoke and noise. did you get a feeling in performance? I would like to combine this modification with an EcuFlash rapid bike with Map by Acrapovic, what do you think? Greetings
Awesome bike you're waiting for. If you do the modification and the map, I've seen 18 horsepower gained. I like it without the map because I like the current power and sounds. Not too much, just right.
I know it's tempting to spend $35 for a piece of exhuast pipe, but nothing can beat a full exhaust system and an ecu tune. Even just aftermarket headers with a tune and stock silencer work great on this particular bike. I never understood making a machine louder for no reason other than to sound "cool". For me it's about the performance of the machine...
Your opinion. Not a fact. The aftermarket headers don't make the bike any better. Check out the forums. It'll help explain what I'm talking about. The factory headers are high quality and thicker than aftermarket. As far as flow, it's the same. There's very little restrictions on factory headers. A tune? Yes that would help performance. As far your comment about just noise, you're incorrect. Removing the bread basket like we did here, helped the bike breathe better. It's not just about sound. Like I said, check the forums. Moore mafia has a good video on this bike.
@@dorian_vlogs Helping the bike "breathe better" doesn't do much for performance without a tune. If anything it will run leaner than it already does stock. I never said the oem headers were bad. They are very high quality for a bike at this price point. They are "thicker" because they are double walled. Kawasaki did this for heat dissipation. Basically to keep the engine heat away from the rider. The actual thickness of the header pipe is very similar to aftermarket headers. If you removed the catalytic converter and then didn't tune it what was the purpose other than to make it louder?

Deeper tone, much better sound, performance feels better but I haven't officially measured.

You're welcome bro. Take the header off. The link pipe is somewhere in the comments of this video. There should be a couple. As faras happy with the results? Absolutely. It sounds awesome and you can't beat it for the price. From all the research other viewers have done, the stock headers are the best. So add this mod to it and you're off to the races.

Not much. Feels faster due to the sound.

Delvick is a good brand. Your '18 is almost brand new bro. Twitchy throttle is the main issue.

Another old dude says... Keep it stock. Loud pipes were great when I was young and stupid, but the last 20 years of constant loud ringing in my ears has sucked more than the joy the loud pipe gave me, by A LOT.

Did you flash the the ECU or add a PCM?
I did not. I know it may be running a bit lean but I have no issues so haven't done it. I may in the future but not sure.

Do you have to change engine management systems?
Not at all. People say you do, but it's been over a year, and there are no issues whatsoever.

There is zero detonation. No backfire, zero issues.

You left the cat in after the cut? Easy to take out there. An exhaust pipe cutter would have been much easier.
My intention was to remove the bread box. The cat is minimal. I didn't want too much sound. It's just right as is. If I want it louder in the future, I'll take the cat out, but if you remove it and it's too loud, you can't go backward. Remove it on yours and let me know how it sounds. I might remove it then. 🤙

Why wouldn't you have taken off the headers in the first place? The whole time I'm watching up to the point you said it yourself I was scratching my head lol. This isn't a very difficult job if planned out a little more. Not removing the headers is probably the one thing that made you say at the end for people not to try this at home. I'll be doing this to my 2022 soon and I'll time myself... and make the video on it. :D Sounds great

Yeah, I took mine off, made it a lot easier... And to be honest, the bike needs new headers to get significant power gains. We picked up a paltry 2hp from the decat, ECU flash and custom tune... Headers give easily 8-10 HP with a tune. The decat just drops weight and sounds amazing.

@@dorian_vlogs Yeah, it sounds brilliant and drops weight, so its worth it. But the double walled headers are very narrow and kill top end power. We smoothed it out on the dyno, but 103hp was all it had in it, and that included a high flow filter and Ivan's airbox mod. The motor really stops pulling in higher gears when you get up in the revs... I had it out on track and hit a wall in 6th where it just stopped pulling.
@@SquireSCA good info. Good to know. I have a couple if other bikes so for me personally the power band is perfect. For track use and to reach its full potential it definitely needs more power and different gearing.

You can, I kept it in. Didn't want it to be too loud. I bet it sounds good with the other part out as well but it sounds way better than stock if you keep it in there. Let me know how it sounds if you remove it. I'd appreciate it.

This is a worthless mod, and a waste of time. Swap out the manifold for a header and gain some real quality performance and sound. Look at the inside diameter of the factory header and you'll understand.
Your opinion, that's cool.. everyone loves the sound.

I would never do this to my Z900RS. Never, in a million years. Destroys much of the awesome character of the machine for no gain. Not only no gain, but for a giant negative loss. The riding experience after removing the bread box is so much worse than stock. But, whatever floats your boat. This couldn't possibly be justified in any way.
Don't worry bud, you're not going to live a million years but I can assure you that I'd rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic like you and right. Why? I won't ride my z900rs because it's too quiet! It's dangerous riding a quiet bike. First rule of any motorcycle is get rid of stock exhaust.
