Who need snow when you have that feast! I find it amazing every time I watch a video or read something how you bring a new piece of culture, history, nature and life about American Samoa. The guys at the culture center seemed to have this all down, unless those were a private family. It was most awesome.
What a beautiful video! I could smell it way over here in Washington! Ya know, it's kinda funny... I only spent two years of my life there, a lifetime ago now, and more than any of the many places I have lived before and since, I only ever feel genuine homesickness for Samoa. A video like this is excruciatingly nostalgic for me. I will be delightfully distracted by this for days now. Thank you, AmSamFam!~
What an amazing video! Nothing beats authentic Samoam UMU made in the islands. Love how you and your beautiful family embrace our culture, so much respect for you. That Palusami always has a good kick to it doesnt it 😍 Sending Christmas cheers AMSAMFAM 💛
OMG! I so remember the Fail video on this cooking turkey last year but I have to say that you guys have redeemed yourselves and that food looks amazing the turkey looks like fall off the bone and juicy and what a wonderful and beautiful setting this is taking place, FANTASTIC job well done you guys WHOOP WHOOP 👏👏👏❤️😊
I love how much you guys embrace the culture and everything. All I can say about last years umu was Melinda’s palusami. It was properly wrapped and it looked as good as this one. When the wraps (kauvela) were taken off the umu, I felt so nostalgic with the steam and I could smell the food that was prepared. Everything looked so tasty. Aside from the palusami which is always the best to have…I miss the miki (coconut milk w onions) Thank you again for another great video. Have a Merry Christmas AmSamFam🤎
Thanks! Yes, nothing beats that smell that escapes as the covering is removed! Except tasting the palusami 😄 Thanks for remembering my palusami 😊 I love it so much, I make it from time to time in our oven at home 🤗
I'm impressed with how you guys pronounced the Samoan words, what an awesome job pronouncing the words just like any other Samoan person. You guys are true Samoans in my book, keep up the great work on those awesome videos and keep them coming. Alofa atu and God bless the AmSamFam🤗👍
As a teenager in the 80s, visited Am Samoa from Hawaii. Our chores was to help with umu. Bad idea, i was trying to help but I was only getting in there way. Best thing to do is watch and learn. They are quick and fast.
I miss doing umu especially every Sunday for tooga’i feast with my family back home 😞 us samoans we put God first and i appreciated you guys for loving the island and be part of the culture🥰❤️ amazing people 💯
@@AmSamFam We live in Riverside, Ca. Some of the uncles last year thought it’ll be a good idea to make a Umu since we live far out in dry farmland. It’s Dec everything is wet and cold. Wasn’t a good idea. The smoke alarm all the first responders to check it out. Luckily we didn’t get a citation but we had a good amount of people for a feast. Especially the fire department guys 🤣😂😂
I totally understand! In Anchorage Alaska we used to do umu when we have special celebration within our family, and we have to get a permit from MOA here locally to allow us to make a umu, in that case fire department will be aware of it! Great video👍 and palusami always taste better with just the coconut natural taste!(real pe’epe’e)…
We’ve been following you since your move. Thank you for embracing the culture. You’re such a beautiful Family. Samoa truly is a place filled w/happy people and y’all fit right in. We Love You, AmSamFam 💚😘
Just a suggestion, and may be a different way, but the wood that is used in the video are treated lumber. Treated with different kinds of chemicals that can be absorbed in the food being cooked in the umu. Thats why your eyes were tearing up because of the chemicals. Natural firewood from local trees can used instead of treated lumber. Thats just my two cents...GREAT VIDEO!!!
you and your wife are the sweetest palagi couple and are very teachable. Merry Christmas, all your videos make me miss home. It was a warm day here in Kansas City on Christmas Eve, remind me of home!

Not being able to communicate fluently in Samoan will not help you. Try your best to watch them perform making the umu. It is not an easy tasks but it is just like farming. After a while, you and your kids will make the best umu❤️😍. Taamu is a relative to the taro, however, if not prepared right, for example, if you do not peel the Taamu right, when cooked you might have an allergic reaction of itchiness. You can put garlic if you want. It will go good with Palusami or any food being cooked. You know it’s like no explaining just watch and follow.
That’s what we’ve heard about the taamu, glad he’s the one who did the peeling 😊 There’s so much work involved with making an umu, I can’t believe people do this every week. Yet I can understand why, the food that comes from it is incredible 🤤❤️
