    Who need snow when you have that feast! I find it amazing every time I watch a video or read something how you bring a new piece of culture, history, nature and life about American Samoa. The guys at the culture center seemed to have this all down, unless those were a private family. It was most awesome.

    • @AmSamFam

      Thanks. Some of the people actually work at the cultural center, but they brought the whole family along to help us out 😃

    What a beautiful video! I could smell it way over here in Washington!
    Ya know, it's kinda funny... I only spent two years of my life there, a lifetime ago now, and more than any of the many places I have lived before and since, I only ever feel genuine homesickness for Samoa. A video like this is excruciatingly nostalgic for me. I will be delightfully distracted by this for days now. Thank you, AmSamFam!~

    I love how much you guys embrace the culture and everything. All I can say about last years umu was Melinda’s palusami. It was properly wrapped and it looked as good as this one. When the wraps (kauvela) were taken off the umu, I felt so nostalgic with the steam and I could smell the food that was prepared. Everything looked so tasty. Aside from the palusami which is always the best to have…I miss the miki (coconut milk w onions) Thank you again for another great video. Have a Merry Christmas AmSamFam🤎

    As a teenager in the 80s, visited Am Samoa from Hawaii. Our chores was to help with umu. Bad idea, i was trying to help but I was only getting in there way. Best thing to do is watch and learn. They are quick and fast.

    Just a suggestion, and may be a different way, but the wood that is used in the video are treated lumber. Treated with different kinds of chemicals that can be absorbed in the food being cooked in the umu. Thats why your eyes were tearing up because of the chemicals. Natural firewood from local trees can used instead of treated lumber. Thats just my two cents...GREAT VIDEO!!!

    Not being able to communicate fluently in Samoan will not help you. Try your best to watch them perform making the umu. It is not an easy tasks but it is just like farming. After a while, you and your kids will make the best umu❤️😍. Taamu is a relative to the taro, however, if not prepared right, for example, if you do not peel the Taamu right, when cooked you might have an allergic reaction of itchiness. You can put garlic if you want. It will go good with Palusami or any food being cooked. You know it’s like no explaining just watch and follow.

    • @AmSamFam
      @AmSamFam  2 роки тому +1

      That’s what we’ve heard about the taamu, glad he’s the one who did the peeling 😊

    The Samoan UMU has no right way of baking your food. Just make sure its hot then the covers should be completely right over the Umu sealing all the heat inside so no leaks on the sides and you'll be OK. If you over cook it it becomes AFULU meaning AWFUL !!!

    Hello I'm Matthew I lived in tonga 1968 to 1971. Now I'm married to a Samoan woman. Will be coming down next year would love to see ya. Been watching you posts for over a year.
    I'm also from Idaho. Pocatello to be exact. My wife has a house there. And we will be retiring there in about 3 years.

    Good effort of trying to learn to make the umu, which is a very difficult thing for a Samoan to do if you are not trained. My suggestion for you is to learn the food preparations first.
    Learn the taro skin removal method, the breadfruit skin removal, the banana peeling, the coconut scraping and extracting of its milk or cream.(and practice it so you can be good at it).. After you get the handle of those. Then learn to prepare the umu's base. The foundation of it. 4 logs or banana stumps for the 4 sides, laying down of the little rocks at the bottom, build the firewood like a frame to the fire to keep the fire burning long. Because if you don't know how to build the fire, your rocks won't get hot.
    This won't take overnight, you need to practice it over and over again. your hands need to get used to the heat as well. You will be exposed to a lot of heat, especially your hands and fingers. And don't forget the smoke lol. You can do it, but it takes a lot of practice. God bless.

    The hard part is scrapes the coconut. So you should do that first, but don't make a fire. Do the palusami first then you should do the fire. If you are the only one who do the umu. Or not enough people.
