- Portland / Old Town Chinatown
Sometime in 2008, a 13 year younger Jack was off to an adventure to the Pacific Northwest and actually had dinner in Portland's Chinatown. As a much more enthusiastic Chinatown enthusiast, he makes his way back to see what Portland's Chinatown is like nowadays!
After arriving to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, the Chinese were also attracted to the opportunities in the Pacific Northwest, as there were also gold mines in Oregon, and a demand in general labor. Portland's Chinatown used to be thriving with local businesses, as well as underground tunnels that provided illegal services as well.
Today, Portland's Chinatown still has local markets and restaurants operating, along with a few attractions such as the Lan Su Chinese Garden, but it's slowly becoming a homeless haven.
*Upon further research, Portland also used to have a Japantown in the same area.
A great article about the history of Portland's Chinatown:

What do you think about this Chinatown??
I've been to both the museum and the gardens and enjoyed both. We went to the museum abut three years ago and had to step over people sleeping on the sidewalks in the middle of the day. That vacant lot near the gate was a sanctioned homeless camp and I'm not sure why it was closed. The streets were cleaner when the tent city was permitted.
@@jeffkanlee3794 Our Lyft driver told us the drugs and homeless are mainly in the Chinatown/Downtown area. Kinda curious how it got so out of hand
@@jacks_off_to The city has not done well with the homeless and it is getting worse. They really have to addressed the problem.
NEVER EVER GO DOWNTOWN AT NIGHT !!. ITS A VERY DANGEROUS PLACE !. 🔥👹☠👿
@@trailhopper883 I agree. After 6 years of leadership talking about homelessness, we have to choose reality: ua-cam.com/video/xmXMF4mzGEw/v-deo.html
The area you were walking through is usually designated as “Old Town /Chinatown,” and it is a historical marker. There was indeed a Chinatown with a Chinese community at one point. A Chinese man who grew up in Portland Chinatown told me that most of the Chinese eventually integrated into Portland and became professionals, and they now live in the suburbs. The Chinese population has a way of doing that: becoming professionals within one or two generations. Once you are affluent enough to live in the suburbs, you move out of your cultural enclaves in the inner city.
Hey Jack, I been watching your videos and enjoying all your travels. I grew up in Portland and went to that Chinese language school every Saturday when I was a kid unfortunately it did me no good as my Cantonese is terrible. Sadly the Portland Chinatown is a shell of what it used to be, all the Chinese moved out to the suburbs and if you're looking for restaurants, grocery and other sundries you'll have to go to the "Jade District" in SE Portland along 82nd Ave. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more content.
it's not too late to pick up Cantonese again!
They had a place called "Rickshaw Charlie's" back in the day that had a huge animated neon sign that really let you know you were in Chinatown. That was about 40 years ago and the wrecking ball has wiped out most of those places since then.
I went there in July and only thing left there was the lonely Chinese restaurant. Other than that, it's a bum town. I applaud you for ability to read Chinese.
Good show
Thanks
I'm sorry that Portland has changed so much for the worst
Portland still has working a Chinatown, it just moved east to 82nd Ave. The Chinese and larger Portland Asian community is very vibrant, its just not downtown.
At the start of the video the police car turned left in front of Jack while he's on the crosswalk then the homeless guy sleeping under the Chinatown gate trying to give him a warning sign 😅
Thanks for the video.....looks like I can take China town off my to do list. That is not what I was expecting.
You can take pictures and some videos in Chinese Garden.
Is it still overrun by tents and homeless people?
Don’t forget the murder of a group of Chinese during gold rush period, they were thrown in the river
Do you know if that's in Portland? I know it happened in other mining towns of Oregon, but I wonder if it happened in Portland too. Also I think there's an underground tour for Portland we didn't research enough
@@jacks_off_to you’re right, it was a mining town in Oregon that it happen. Lynchings were legal or the law did not defend minorities
@@thainguyen3216 I just checked Google Maps for the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site which is in John Day Oregon and that area might be it but I'll have to double check
we need to get our people out of there. its spiraling out of control now
You should go to Chinatown in the UK
This is a year ago but it is a lot worse now
You are right man...i was there last week and most of the stores were closed...so efn sad
Nah. Not got overran. Not all the other Chinatowns. Not all the other Chinatown. Not more like a active homeless community. Not more lie a active homeless community. Not more lie a active homeleh community. Not more lie a active homeleh communie. /
its a damn shame what the city govt in portland has done to china town
They burned many chinatowns down in calif. Only small remnants many, Probably jealous of how creative and industrious the chinese were. Did you make it up to sierras chinatowns camps yet
