Thank you so much for showing this. When I was in nursing school we spend a day at Dorothy’s kitchen that is also the Green Gold in mentioned in Joh Steinbeck’s writings. There was a tiny medical clinic in the back of Dorothy’s kitchen and we helped out there and had lunch with the homeless and listened to their stories. I’ll never forget that day. I’ve revisited a couple of more times with a Christian group. There is also an incredibly beautiful Buddhist Temple in Chinatown. They put on one hell of an Obon Festival. Thanks again for posting this.
I really do have a lot of respect for people like that guy you were talking to early on that have love for their community, and where they live. We need more of that.

My family has some deep roots in the Suey Sing Tong starting with my Great-Grandfather. I've been to the Suey Sing Tong Building in Salinas a few times when I was a kid. We would walk from the Suey Sing to the Republic Cafe for our Tong Banquets.
Same old story, the older generation died off in their community and the newer generation moved out seeking for a better opportunity leaving the old generation behind. What sacrifices they had to make to give us at opportunity living in America. I think that’s why our parents push us so hard in our studies, so we can have a better life in America. It is the “ONLY” law in American history that target one group of people in America, talk the murdering of “Vincent Chan” and the injustices in our court system for not serving the Chinese American Community. Make us be aware of the past so hopefully we will fight for our freedom and not let this happen again.. Teach the next generation to be proud of their past history and how we contribution in making America.great. Jack you have already started to educate our young generation about our history past and where they settled and why? I am very grateful for you for your educational program. We have a lot to be proud of, yes, we help build the continental railroads, the official photograph, did not have any Chinese worker representative in the photo only the Irish’s worker. Why where so many Asian settled in the Central Valley? Because they help build the farm lands in California. Most of California land were deserts , they help build the water way to irrigate the land. How else did California became one of the world largest producer of crop. There are much more story of the Asian American heritage in America but I will end writing an novel on the subject. This was interesting! I lived in Marina and worked in Salinas. I never made it out to Chinatown, although I saw it on maps, because folks told me that there wasn’t much to see. Now I wish I had at least taken a drive out there. A question: is there any Chinese presence still there (does the Confucian church/temple still have services)-or is what’s left just building names and the street named after Tom Wong? I do recall a YMBA-Young Men’s Buddhist Association-in Salinas, although I don’t know if it included a gym, etc., like the YMCAs do or if it was just a social organization. A suggestion for another video: a glimpse of what remains of nearby Fort Ord and its history.

Thanks so much for the video. My dad and his family lived on Lake Street before World War II. My grandfather had a barber shop in Salinas Japantown/Chinatown. I'm so glad to see that things were cleaned up. I visited Lake Street around 2017 and shocked by the condition of the neighborhood.

I was born and raised in Salinas. Salinas has always exploited all immigrants because of agriculture. I visited a couple of years ago. It has only gotten worse! I grew up on the east side, was not surprised at what I saw. People living in third world conditions. Just like thousands of American cities good paying jobs are non- existent. Salinas is another example of extreme hidden poverty. I do have fond memories of Salinas, it was really sad to see it like this.
Back in the late 80s, early 90s the storage facility (known as The Warehouse) in China Town was where the Salinas music scene thrived. Many of us rented out storage rooms and created "band row." Mostly Metal bands, but it was definitely a huge scene for many local bands and groupies. Unfortunately, some started renting out space to sell drugs and stolen vehicles and it became the mess that you saw on your first trip.
my goal is to become someone big in salinas and rebuild chinatown, id love to see it boom again, id have a place for all the homeless to move to as they’d need to get help too, imagine salinas being the town w mixed agriculture making it a active community w all the people, that’d be cool to have like back in the years 2013-2017
I know visiting Grandfather, when I was younger, in his small cafe on El Dorado St. . The Filipino community would come in and give Grandfather something to cook for them, (deer meat, snail, fish, frog, etc, etc …) and he would cook it for them. That was how it where in those days, we need to get back into those Asian Culture qualities. The Asian community in Stockton was very close knit community, they had to be, to protect each other from racism.

The 1st Filipino immigrants arrived in Stockton in the late 1800s and became the largest Filipino community outside of the Philippines until the Fair Housing Act was passed. Filipinos started moving to Daly City in the 70s because of the affordability. Thank you again for your videos! My family and I really love them.
Very good video! I went to the elementary right next to the Chinese school and never knew what the building was there for. Very good info and I'll check it out this weekend. China town in salinas unfortunately will be lost in time. I heard in the 50s and 60s it was the place to be as far as clubs and good restaurants back in the day.
Castroville was my home town mid 80s till mid 90 I remembered that school always abandoned there was also a continuation school whit a tennis cord park now it’s no longer there now it has been replace whit new park…so much memories the school across the street was castroville elementary…the school I attend to….😕
I have distant cousins (Gin's) who grow up there with Japanese backgrounds. The family had a grocery store I believe in. 1940's - 60's. It looks like the many of these places are like what New Zealand regional places look like in 1940's - 70's.
Salinas is great. It’s part Chicano, Pisa Mexicans, Okie whites, regular whites, some Filipinos, some Tongans, and a little smattering of other Asians. There aren’t a lot of black folks from Salinas, not to say there are none, but a lot of them come in from other areas for short-term “economic opportunities.” Some are pimps, some are looking to cash in on the Chinatown drug trade. It had to be tough for this guy thinking he was going to an actual Chinese community and finding Salinas 😅
I grew up in the Marina just a few miles west of Salinas and lived there until 2020. I never really liked going into Salinas because of the gang and murder problem. Even if I did go into Salinas, I avoided Chinatown and the east side like the plague
Did you even know the History in the 80's and 90's there.. Tops was on the corner I believe it burned down...Then there was all the Mexican bars.. Sailors..Farm workers was all there for Entertainment.Im part of that History..lol

Where the homeless had a place to sit and watch tv. Next door was the mission where the homeless could sleep in two man bunks and get a evening meal. How do I know all this? 40 years ago I was homeless there
It's pretty much the same everywhere nowadays with homelessness. More people less resources. Less people want to work for minimum wage doing hard labor work. better to get welfare and free housing and free healthcare. Everything expensive. more crimes. law of supply and demand. Also for the most part, Asian people are not into vandalizing/graffiti. We into being good neighbors/citizens/working hard and family/community.
I grew up in that area back in the early early 80's when it was all pimp's and prostitutes but our Asian community was still well represented on the other side of where you were walking. I'm not trying to romanticize anything but I try to only remember the good. A lot of lost people but good people but you have to remember that it had been there since cannery row days
I worked on that new building with all the glass storefronts. We'd watch junkies shoot up right outside the windows. There was only enough room on the street for one car to pass because of all the tents and heaps of garbage. Every so often the city will clean it all out, but it always returns. It's a perpetual shit hole.

Yeah I go there a few times a month. Not a very diverse community there, it is overpopulated . I am sure back in the day it was like an Atascadero type of town where you retire and enjoy the weather, not anymore.

I was there today and seen alot of lively characters. They need love/self love, rehab, housing, medical care, counseling. Many things hopefully sooner than later. Dorothy's place is a good start for a new path for them and others.
If streets could talk. So much history on that block, underneath those streets are tunnels that lead to former opium dens, bootleg whiskey storage rooms, and Chinese gambling casinos, the prostitution was conducted above ground. Fort Ord soldiers would patronize the bars every weekend as well as the prostitutes. The street used to have 6 or 7 bars, saloons, cantina's or honkey tonks. Thanks to unending illegal immigration, heroin was everywhere on that street as early as 15 years ago. There use to be an awesome Mexican restaurant around the corner on Lake street called "The Ravancha" . Best damn food in the whole valley 😋
Hey you can't say our Chinatown isn't a cultural experience. You will learn something from it. I lived there when there was no wall blocking it off and an actual barber on the corner. And Chin Brothers actually owned Chins Brothers. Daddy had quick access to product 😂

I've lived in Salinas since 2000. Been to Chinatown once! Homelessness is all over this town, not just Chinatown!

Yeah I go there a few times a month. Not a very diverse community there, it is overpopulated . I am sure back in the day it was like an Atascadero type of town where you retire and enjoy the weather, not anymore.

If streets could talk. So much history on that block, underneath those streets are tunnels that lead to former opium dens, bootleg whiskey storage rooms, and Chinese gambling casinos, the prostitution was conducted above ground. Fort Ord soldiers would patronize the bars every weekend as well as the prostitutes. The street used to have 6 or 7 bars, saloons, cantina's or honkey tonks. Thanks to unending illegal immigration, heroin was everywhere on that street as early as 15 years ago.
There use to be an awesome Mexican restaurant around the corner on Lake street called "The Ravancha" . Best damn food in the whole valley 😋
