Steven Wilson - Collapse The Light Into Earth (The Future Bites Sessions)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- The second in The Future Bites Sessions series is a version of Collapse The Light Into Earth. This song was originally released as the closing track on Porcupine Tree's 2002 album In Absentia. That version was written and mostly recorded in my home studio in 2001 during the immediate aftermath of 9/11, with Richard Barbieri adding to it later during the album sessions in New York. To date the song has never been performed live by either PT or my solo band, so I thought it would be a great choice to do in this format. I really hope you enjoy it, and please feel free to make suggestions of other songs you'd like to hear me do as part of the series.
PS - thanks for all the comments about the new studio, yes I'm very happy with it! I'm grateful to my wife Rotem and her friend interior designer Michal Strassburg for planning and designing it. Most of the new equipment came from Funky Junk, and the acoustic treatments were designed and fitted by Sound Zero Acoustics. The vocal microphone I use is an MS47 condenser tube (a clone of the classic Telefunken U47), the piano microphones are Soyuz, and the room mics are Austrian Audio. The M4000 mellotron was custom made for me a few years ago by Streetly Electronics in the UK, who have been making these wonderful beasts since 1963. The organ is a plug in (don't own a real one of those....yet!)

Lyrics:
I won't shiver in the cold
I won't let the shadows take their toll
I won't cover my head in the dark
And I won't forget you when we part
Collapse The Light Into Earth
I won't heal given time
I won't try to change your mind
I won't feel better in the cold light of day
But I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to stay
Collapse The Light Into Earth
Great work yet again Steven 🎶 my lifes stresses don't exist when I play your music 🎶
I love it
Thanks for this, Steven. Lovely song. During lockdown v1 I bought myself a midi controller and have started to record using 'Studio One'. I'm tempted to see if I can get a version of this done, though it'll probably never be publicly aired ;-)
❤️
Bold of you to assume we don't know the lyrics by heart
"She's Moved On" would be fantastic to listen to and watch. Playing it just with your acoustic guitar. Thanks!
She changes every time you look
By summer it was all gone - now she's moved on
Thank you so much for this Song! This Album! This whole music! This song is so beatiful!
I get shivers at the thought of it!
Acoustic would be okay. But the version they did in the Deadwing sessions is so good. Gavin Harrison completes it in that version.
oooooh! I couldn't agree more, good call!
I remember years ago, you were playing live in Krakow. You said, there is a song you are not doing live too often, as it requires really good sound from the concert hall. Than you simply clapped your hands and said: 'oh yes, this room has it'. Next six minutes or so, was one of these moments in live I will never forget. Smart kid it was....
That song was played on an organ on my wedding :)
Cool! Congratulations and Good Luck!
That's quite bold, having a break-up song played at your wedding :)
It will be played at my funeral...
Nice one
Heartattak in a layby would be awesome!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Steven once mentioned that Heartattack in a Layby is one of his favorite songs. PLS, Steven, do it!
100% Ab-so-f*#king-lutley agree with you Fer. That would be an ear-gasm.
He did that in Auckland 2018. Was sublime.
I love that song, it touches every fiber of my being. The sadness of that song is cathartic.
YES
"Collapse the light into earth" is quite possibly my favourite SW/PT song of all time. Always tears me up, I don't know why.
Same here ;)
Same, it makes no sense but it HITS that spot
Yes, remember first hearing it and getting all emotional and still do.
"You don't know why" bro it's straight up depressing
Yes it makes me tear up too, especially the second verse. The: "I wouldn't stop you, if you wanted to stay".
I would love to see 'Deform To Form a Star' or 'Insurgentes'!
YES
Yass
Yes!!
Steven Wilson, "Deadwing" too wasn't never recorded live. Please do it

Huh? ua-cam.com/video/dgVuEqRz0kc/v-deo.html
"Collapse" is a beautiful song.
One of the most beautiful he's ever written.
Love it...❤
"Happiness III" would be interesting, as well as
"Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled"
"Nine Cats"
"Song Of Unborn"
"I Find That I'm Not There" (section from The Sky Moves Sideways - Phase I)
"Deform To Form A Star"
"I Drive The Hearse", and so on...
Oh yeah, give us Happiness III
You forgot phantoms.
@@HenryClavo that could be awesome, as well! Nice choice.
@@GodZefir Would definitely like to hear Happiness III too!
Every single one of those.
So he's really reading us. That's so nice, Steven!!
Lol I doubt it. I am sure he just picked it as well.
@@sallysimpson7 have you read the description?
For someone who used to say he couldn't sing your voice comes over bloody well in these sessions. Having a ball on this musical journey.
My funeral song...ever since I first heard it in 2003 on 5.1...
Never ever denigrate this man for the music he does...He's never stood still with music; a truly great musician too.
Mine too...
Was anyone else singing along adding those high harmonies, "Cooolllllaaaapse! The light! Into eaaaarrrrth..."?
Oh absolutely
@@SpaztikBeef couldnt resist
i wouldnt call it singing. but yea
Yep :O)))))
I was literally doing this while I came across this comment. Made me smile! ❤️
Up to this point it had never been performed live, but yesterday's concert in Montreal, it was performed in the encore! What a treat!
I would love to hear the Deadwing song, that song was my introduction to your music.
Love that song Kyle!!!
It was Lazarus for me
Same for me
@@SC-xy7cn arriving somewhere but not here for me!!!
This song is testament to the full album experience. We all get shivers with it because it reminds us of the emotional rollercoaster of the album, almost as a reward after the heaviness and the doom of Strip the Soul and Creator. It's always been one of the most perfect "end credits" album moments for me. I know Steven had regrets about Drown With Me not being on the album, but In Absentia couldn't be any other way as a whole
Half Light! Now there’s a song I’d love to hear on these Sessions!
its been done and its awesome
It's amazing how much this song means to me, 20 years after its release.
what a track this is. i feel it's somewhat overlooked because of how good in absentia is, but it might just be steven's great piano ballad
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I have loved it since I first heard it.
Hey steven, is 'feel so low' too much to ask for? it sounds too personal and heartbreaking but omg great track
"Thanks..."
I love that song tooo
Absolutely hits u in the guts!!! Nice song choice..
omg lol. *steven looks to camera* 'Thanks'. lol. I'll be crying all over again if he does it.
AAAAAAACESS DENIEEEEED
My suggestions:
Russia on ice
Deadwing
Sentimental
Heartattack in a Layby
ty Steven!
YES
YESSS
If he took suggestions, he'd end up redoing all PT
@@adrian5b You're not wrong😂
Heartattack in a Layby, uff...
One of the best songs ever written (by anyone).
This is my ultimate favorite from Porcupine Tree. Listened to this when I was 13-14 years old, in my room with the disc man, shutting out the entire world. So much of my songwriting is kind of wrapped up in these lyrics and the vibe the music gives off. “Stemning” as we say in Norwegian, which is the abstract void and atmosphere that fills the room. The “stemning” in this song is so unique. Thank you.
“Waiting”, “Stranger by the Minute”, “Perfect Life”.
Lots of love, Steven. Had the pleasure of watching you live 3 times in Canada. Thank you for your music.
This is one of my favorite songs from PT, and frankly one of the best tracks I've ever heard. So freakin epic. Thank you for doing this Steven! 6:45AM eastern time is so early for me here on ET, but I'll do my best to catch it as it airs.
I'm in the same boat, will be listening on my way to work 😊
"Lazarus", "Mellotron Scratch", or "Shesmovedon" would be nice. This series is great!
Shesmovedon would be amazing ❤
2nd this
Both this and Last chance would be awesome
Resurrection of Porcupine Tree would be the best!
@@rishabhsinghsolanki8375 I disagree. Steven doing whatever he wants will be best. He had done PT for 23 years before it went on hold. Shouldn't we just appreciate the great music and experiences we already have and the quality works we're still getting from his solo career?
@@friendofpelicantown I indeed appreciate his solo career and I love it a lot. Everything about Steven is too good. I just want porcupine tree to reunite.
OMG the piano keys' sound made it so much more organic! Lots of love to you Steven!
Yeah, and the Mellotron too.
I love this series. Truly lucky Steven is doing these. Thank you, Steven. Long time fan
Steven Wilson.. never old🙌🔥
Steven this Is beautiful. I love the change that has happened to your career and what you share of your personal life to the public. It's an inspiring transformation.
Steven I am a fan from Philippines. This is something! I can't stop listening to this song, thanks for this. We recently were hit by typhoon, watching this vid gives hope. Thank you so much Steven Wilson.
Thank you Mr Steven for all that beautiful music.
👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋. Steven Wilson is a true artist. Always reinventing himself, while reaching to keep the same astonishing and timeless talent.
what i wouldn't give to hear In formaldehyde .that solo is amongs the tastier melodies of yours Steven Wilson!or taste my dream from no mans catalogue!
"In Formaldehyde" and "Collapse The Light Into Earth" are a whole, separate, untouchable tier of songs. So simple, tragic, and clean. You're right about the guitar solo - it's absolutely my favorite ending in any PT song!
I'd just like to comment that I'm doing a study in design art technology in the Netherlands (originally I'm from Finland and I've seen a bunch of your shows in Helsinki) and I think it's a testament to your unique approach to art that I can share different sides of your music to anyone and there's something that captures the attention of anyone I share it to and it's always different things that people focus on. I personally love all of it but that's just me.
It's not just you Aleksi, Welcome in Holland!
Ha, even barefoot in the studio. Keep on keepin on Mr. Wilson! Love all your music. Thanks for putting out these sessions!
One of my most favourite songs ever.....got tears in my eyes. Thank you Steven.
Sir, "Sentimental" please
YESSSSSSSSSS
He did it in tilburg
Oh Lord, I wasn't expecting that! I've got tears in my eyes. So beautiful and heartbreaking.
If I had a wish I'd like to hear "A door marked summer" or "Stars die". Both are very important to me. Thank you for your music.
SUPERLATIVE MR WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favorite PT songs. They have some great closing songs on their albums:
Up The Downstair - Fadeaway
Signify - Dark Matter (also great drum pattern by Chris Maitland)
Stupid Dream - Stop Swimming (another great drum pattern by Chris)
Lightbulb Sun - Feel So Low
In Absentia - Collapse The Light Into Earth
Deadwing - Glass Arm Shattering (I consider She's Moved On as a bonus track).
The Incident - I Drive The Hearse
I would love to see "I drive the hearse" in this format. Another one could be "Half Light" or "Feel so low" ...
Amazing idea to make these sessions. Thank you for making our days better :)
My suggestions are:
From 44 to 48
Remember Me Lover
Nowhere Now
Absolute marvelous album. Genius is too mild a description regarding his work in composition, recording and producing.... the best ears in the business and such a beautiful singer as well
as all his other incredible talents.
Long live Steven Wilson
Tino
Thanks Steven, I know you want to explore new areas, your past music is very important to me, it has given me strength when I needed it, please keep popping back to the past for us! Of so many of your songs, "Trains" has to be one of my favourites.
One song I'd love to see you do both in the studio and on tour is "Happiness III". As much as I love your intense progressive works, there's something about that short and upbeat song that I really love!
Wonderful Steven. Thank you for your masterpieces. You have inspired me to create music, more than than you will ever know. Love this track.
Great
Woa. You are magnetic. Superb. Well done. 🎶I won’t heal given time. 🎶 Story of my sad life. 😖
Amazing :) as usual. StevenGOAT
Would love him to play Nine Cats from On the Sunday of Life
That's a fun one!
Used to always cover that at an open mic' I had regularly attended... Didn't know it was so popular, as everyone always seemed to just assume I wrote it.
I'm gonna keep saying "Buying new soul" until it happens
Sir you are the greatest musician to walk the face of the earth. Thank you.
I LOVE THIS MUSIC
Beautiful song and outstanding version! I think My Ashes, Sentimental or Happy Returns would sound incredible in that format! :) Cheers Steven!
"Stars Die" or perhaps "Ambulance Chasing" would be nice, but I'll take anything really... 😁💜
The catharsis we Americans needed today. Thanks Steven!
My favorite album of porcupine is In Absentia. I remember listened the whole álbum and what amzing end with this song. Porcupine tree and the work of Steven Wilson has become a sign of a time. I begun to listen Porcupine tree because of the algorim of youtube, and in a Covid19 pandemic. Besides, a few weeks later I lost my desr cat Michin, who had lived with my family and I for a 8 years. This music have become a complete experience. Thanks Steven, and thanks Purcupine Tree for being company and those moments.
In these times we need an uplifting song and there is nothing more uplifting than Permanating 😎👍.
I think most Steven Wilson fans are of the opinion that sad times call for sad music. And that happy times... call for sad music.
@@SplendidFellow this
ah, i missed you- my lets go into depression song.
Not alone , friend
Steven, you may never know how much happiness you're giving us sharing these studio sessions with us. I just wanna hug you
It is beautiful how a song improves the day of many people.💓
My husband will be working at this time so I'm requesting for him to please play " A smart kid" from the album "Stupid Dream", Thank you.
I just LOVE the fact that Steven shared the microphones he used!
This song is truly a masterpiece and gave me chills when I heard it for the first time in the album. This version is definitely going to be unique 😍
P.S.- Can you (or anyone else who knows) please share which organ plug in you use?
Ahhhhh so BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!
This song is one of his best. I love it because it signifies The End of something immensely significant in someone's life like a Death or a Relationship. Just like a sunset is the end of day. So beautiful yet incredibly emotional. I love this song so much.
Such a great track! Thanks Steven for all the wonderful art you have put out over the past few years and I am looking forward to the new chapter of your catalog. A suggestion for a next song could be “The sky moves sideways”, as I really liked the solo performance you did during the “FOABP” tour on guitar, but I think you could make a wonderful short version on keyboard as well.
Yes! The simple version played on "We Lost the Skyline" was fantastic
@@SplendidFellow Yes exactly, even though the full band 'long' version is awesome I think it would be awesome to hear a small version on the piano/keyboard.
My suggestions:
-Linton Samual Dawson
-Waiting (an electronic version)
-A Smart Kid
-Russia On Ice
-Buying New Soul
-Lightbulb Sun
-Storm Corrosion
-Queen Quotes Crowley (has potential for some weird home studio experiments)
SW had touched millions way before youtube and social media . And now we finally see the genius in action.
Thank you so much for including this song in your tour. One more time, I traveled from Colombia to Mexico to attend the show and seeing you performing this song was one of the sweetest moments of my life. It feels almost like a full circle. Thanks Steven. ❤
Will you please do the song- "Heart Attack in a Layby"....
+++++
Can I get "Synesthesia" plssss!!!
Please bring back Porcupine Tree again Steven. We've all been eagerly waiting for a reunion for years
I owe you a lot, Steven. Thank you for this music. ❤️
hearthattack in a layby then please!
Heartattack needs 2nd vocals. And noone beats Arriving Somewhere... version with John Wesley.
Dear Steven, why don't you perform the wonderful and little known "LONDON"? Is it a solo track or a PT one? I only remember that I downloaded it in 1997, if I'm not wrong. I really love it.
London is essentially don't hate me from lightbulb sun. Great track.
London is the scratch track name for a demo of don't hate me
@@rushxanthemtcg5607 yep.
This song means a lot to me- thanks, Steven!
You're a treat to the ears, whenever, wherever.
Bless you Mr. Wilson :)
Should Steve clean the lens of his camera? Looks really foggy. Fingerprints maybe
I'm sitting in my warehouse job getting ready for the day....thanks this is what was needed
One of my favourite songs what I heard in my life.
Man, bring back Porcupine Tree. We all long to see PTree back. It was the epitome of prog rock for me and countless others. And it always will be the best for us.
Speak only for yourself, please. I absolutely see no need for him to bring them back.
One of my favorite tunes.
#Weloveit since it was released! Best ballad for funerals!
I have loved this song since I first heard it.
My favorite PT song. So glad to hear it outside of the album for the first time. For whatever reason, I have dozens of memories frozen in that song.
This song is "everything" thanks Steven. 🙏
Thank you so much for performing and uploading this beautiful song.
A great Steven, in a great studio. A beautiful world in the world.
How much I love this song...
What a beautiful song. (From the good old porcupine tree days)❤️
My Favorit Song👍 👍👍
Thank you. In Absentia and Deadwing really spoke to me. You know it when you feel it in your core, the swelling of your soul with the music. You return to it like an old friend when you need uplifting during troubling times. Thank you.
Always giving Peace in soul .
One of my favourite songs ever!
I have always loved this song, and this rendition is beautiful.
This is beautiful. Thank you.
Discovered this FANTASTIC song yesterday and have played it non stop since (even woke up with it in me) - thank you, thank you, thank you for gracing us with such absolute pearl!!
