- ST. PETER’S SEMINARY, located in Bangalore, traces its origins to the “Grand Séminaire” of Pondicherry, founded in 1778 by the Paris Foreign Mission Society (MEP) to foster indigenous vocations to the priesthood in India. The seminary was moved to Bangalore in 1934, due to the milder climate, and was named St. Peter's Seminary in gratitude for the support of the Pontifical Society of St. Peter the Apostle. It was officially recognized as a regional seminary by Rome in 1942. In 1962, it became a Pontifical Seminary, affiliated with the Pontifical Urban University of Rome, and began offering the Baccalaureate in Theology (B.Th) to its final-year students.
The seminary, which has produced over 1,945 priests, offers theological education and formation to seminarians from various dioceses. It was upgraded to a faculty in theology, now known as St. Peter's Pontifical Institute of Theology, in 1976. The motto of the seminary is “To Serve God and His People” with a focus on the holistic formation of priests.
“Radicati in Caritate” (Latin) means “Rooted in Charity”, with “radicati” meaning “rooted” and “caritate” meaning “charity” or “love”.
