How director Danny Boyle knew "straight away" that Himesh Patel should be the star of "Yesterday"

- The Beatles had 20 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Chart, and they remain one of the most influential bands of all time -- but a new movie, "Yesterday," is set in a world where an aspiring singer named Jack is the only musician who remembers them. Jack becomes famous by pretending the songs are his. Himesh Patel, who plays Jack, joins "CBS This Morning" along with the film's director, Danny Boyle.

With the ending of the movie, I want a sequel where Jack [the protagonist] writes the Harry Potter books.
How would he remember every word in the books
Nah mate. Some good movies dont need sequels. This one for example
Hilmy Asari fair point. “Yesterday” is a great song.0
Oasis is his second act
That would be a good sequel. Including him going and visiting JK Rowling
Why is his ethnicity even a question? He's a great actor. End of story.
American pop culture is a decade behind the UK, they see everyday normality as some kind of raceless paradise
Exactly. Gail and her friend Oprah need to stop worrying about everyone’s ethnicity. That is extremely divisive as we’ve seen. We are all humans and Himish Patel is just extremely talented. He did an amazing job!
@@margaritam.9118 you fail to acknowledge the historical nuance of race relations in the US. In case you'd forgotten, slavery was still a thing here less than two hundred years ago, whereas you lot abolished it while you were simultaneously trying to keep us under your thumb. Gain some awareness.
@@Katia-jj4cd None of the people in the US alive today had slaves. It is time for the black community to stop making everything about race.
Its the news, anything to create divisiveness. Bottom line, its great for business.
Saw the film and enjoyed it immensely.
Are there Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr?
@@hart.6230 Unfortunately, no. But, if you have not yet seen the movie, I would highly recommend it. There is a particular scene that will leave you in tears; you will know the one that I am speaking of, believe me.
@@robertbrauer6718 I'm sure a lot of people, like myself, had that reaction. When that door opened late in the movie I swear I had tears rolling down my face for two or three minutes.
So many things they could have done differently to make it an epic film. It was fun, but not memorable

This is absolutely the best tribute to The Beatles wonderful music!
I loved both the concept and the execution.
Fantastic movie!
johnnybgoodeish it was INCREDIBLE!
I feel like The Beatles not existing would have utterly changed the music industry. Maybe jazz becomes the symbol of counter-culture in the 60s. I reckon they could have gone a lot more interesting with their alternate timeline.
@@andrewtucker94 They did kind of put a joke in about that, like how Oasis was never formed, and he jokes, makes sense. But you are right there would be tons of bands and singers not to have made it because they didn't get influrnced by the Beatles.
@@davelanger It's not just that though - I think without The Beatles pop/rock music and albums wouldn't have reached such heralded status. The industry itself & its evolution might be totally different.
@@andrewtucker94 disagree because you still had the stones.

Himish was perfectly cast in the film.
@@bwebb90 pretty sure this is just racist
the character is supposed to be distressed x confused cos his trapped in a time warp where no one knows the Beatles. I felt him to be amusing and likeable.
very annoying, this movie will get bigger if he isnt the main character
His voice was really good and he did the typical Brit dry humour perfect, just thought the movie was a tad long and could have cut it down a bit. still enjoyable.
@@rodaempat1223 Well according to the director he was the best, so if anyone else was on there it wouldved suffered

Enjoyed the movie. The main thing I took away from it is that The Beatles are the greatest thing to happen to music.
Fans of other genres of music (Classical, Jazz etc..) may not see it that way, but yes , regarding popular music, that idea you took from the movie, I think, cannot be disputed.
That's what I would expect one to say with a view limited by what is simple, modern, overexposed, and Western.
I took that away too and also they helped give young people a chance to voice their views.
Such a GREAT movie! Himesh was amazing, he seemed so genuine, so humble. I LOVE the music, the acting, the script, the ending!!
The Beatles had 20 #1 hits.
20!!!!! That's insane.
And that doesn't even cover all the other songs they had that were fantastic but never got to #1.
In 8 years
Most of their aongs always come to top 10, every year every day every week.
Beatles 27 #1s altogether
Like 51 with solo work added
Just read through all careers and world charts Beatles through solo, 68 #1 hits.
This everything world, not just U.K. and U.S..
Danny Boyle was right about Himesh Patel's soul. Mann that guy can sing! Loved the humour in the movie too! A nice classic.

When the Beatles exploded on the scene, heading up the "British Invasion", it was like absolutely NOTHING before musically. Their sound, look, charisma, charm, personalities and musical influence was just mind boggling. Everyone (including yours truly) wanted to learn to play a guitar and be like them and that was just on the surface. What they CREATED was revolutionary and as a long time musician (both performing and in the studio), songwriter, I can appreciate that much more how they broke nearly every "written" rule in the music "book".
If they hadn't called themselves, "The Beatles", they could have been called, "The Pied Pipers" because that's exactly what they were. NEVER again, unfortunately, will any music group come close to the influence they had and still have to this day.
What about Buddy Holly? Such talent extinguished so early, imagine what he would have become. I'm in total agreement with you about the Beatles, their influence across the world was amazing, remember John Lennon's crass comment about being more well known than Jesus, of course he didn't mean it like it was interpreted, like coca cola the Beatles were everywhere. Then of course the Beatles sang Chuck Berry on there early albums, so even they were influenced by the American music that came to the UK, music that travelled with the USAF in the second world war, Glenn Miller for instance. Then the Black blues players, skiffle in the UK. Yes I would say the "British Invasion" as you put it would not have happened as it did without the USA "invasion" in the first place. All great stuff!
@@hulverfarm5132 Buddy Holly? What about Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, etc etc. Every generation thinks the music that imprinted them when they were young was the greatest and a revolution. The Beatles are one of the most overhyped groups in pop music history.
@@alstevens7060 All those American iconic musicians you mentioned are without a doubt great, many of them influenced the Beatles, but what you may not realize is that the Beatles came at just the right time. Kennedy was shot in late November, putting country into a depression, followed by Christmas music, then when the Beatles show up in early February, with their bubble gum, feel happy music, making the country feel that it was O.K to move on.
@@hulverfarm5132 John Lennon was right with his " Jesus " remark. he meant that more people bought their records and went to their concerts, than went to church. Of course the religious zealots in the Bible Belt took offence at that. It makes me laugh how they burned Beatles records. So what? The Beatles didn't care, people had to buy them in order to burn them, so maybe the sales went up. KERCHING!!, more money in the coffers!
John should never have apologised, it made him look guilty when all he did was make an off the cuff remark.
I'm gonna listen to every Beatles Album after I see this movie.
Enjoy the next several years
Appleholic1 they made 13 albums it would take about ten hours to listen to all of them and they were put up to UA-cam recently
It depends on how you listen to them hence the key word in my comment "enjoy".@@brendanmccabe8373
Appleholic1 I was just pointing out that it wouldn’t take that long to listen to all the albums obviously the main point was “enjoy” but still
@@brendanmccabe8373 Understood....and you are correct... 10 hours. Wow! That is a lot of music.
“I like how the movie makes a point of not addressing the character’s ethnicity”
Erm, maybe because it’s completely irrelevant to the plot?
i think thats the point they were trying to make my guy
That's the difference between the UK and America. Race isn't something people wear on their sleeve in the UK.
@AliceI mean that Americans tend to make race superficial- the phrase "wearing something on your sleeve" means using it as a token to show people you look different. E.g. a rich person wearing lots of jewlery. Race about more than how you look, which is why in this movie ( fundamentally about music) race is irrelevant.
awinbisa well said
I noticed that the movie didn't have any songs with a sitar. All good, but The Beatles turned on the West to Eastern music.

I watched this movie a 2nd time. It's really a fantastic movie and Patel did a superb job.
Great film Yesterday and the Cast shined especially Mr. Patel put a lot of heart & Soul into his character.
Shone* not " shined ".
Clive Bindley It’s “shined”; “shone” is past-participle.
@@punkyagogo Exactly right. The had already performed so the performance was in the past. Therefore they " shone". Thanks for proving my point.👍😁
shined / shone. The transitive form of the verb “shine” is ”shined.” ... If the verb is intransitive (lacks an object) and the context merely speaks of the act of shining, the past tense is definitely “shone”: “The sun shone all afternoon” (note that nothing is said here about the sun shining on anything).
Love this film and Himesh has such a wonderful voice.
Himesh was extraordinary. Superb actor. Superb film.
Beautiful film...feel good...loved it. Makes u wanna listen to all their wonderful songs over and over.
i am so glad my dad exposed me to the beatles when i was little, i am a hardcore beatles fan
This was one of the most entertaining and heartfelt movies I have ever seen. The music, the acting, the production was wonderful.
Every time an American sees an opportunity to turn something into a race issue... That alone throws shade on the performances and end product, and is disrespectful.
I'm sure Himesh wasn't pining for this job because he's of Indian ancestry and I'm sure Danny wasn't praying for a minority to get this role for points, but rather this came down to pure talent, and just leave it at that. It's a great film, and I had the pleasure of watching it with a group of women who were of age at the time of the Beatles. We laughed, cried, gasped, and enjoyed every minute of the journey.
if you're making that statement in regards to the question being asked in this interview and to her asking it, i personally find it'd be more appropriate to redirect towards the industry execs who purposefully steer stories into racial pandering and to the audiences who buy into it- rather than the tv interviewer who's merely bringing up the fact that it's refreshing such WASN'T the case this time around

One of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time. I mean I like action films, Avengers, Star Wars etc. but the emotion that this film elicited it was phenomenal!! And you could feel that the people who made it were huge Beatles fans. Most especially felt in the words moving across the screen at the end credits ( and at other points throughout the film ) . It Truly had a Beatles feel to it. Anyone who’s a fan knows what I’m talking about.

What i liked so much about Himesh was not only his singing but also his face expression with these unbelieving, amazed eyes.

Himesh is so beautiful and so wonderfully talented.

Cool tribute to a band who shook the world. How? More number one hits than any band before or since. Set the standard for fashion and loved by everyone from ages 8 to 80, even in the 60s. Revolutionized how songs were actually recorded. As the Rock Encyclopedia states, "They were the greatest rock band the world has ever seen, probably always will be."
In any parallel world, there would be nothing as great as The Beatles.

The best movie I have ever seen...Brilliant
Just wait until you discover Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick and Quentin Tarantino. Yesterday was not very good.
So many things that I just LOVE about this movie. It has some things that most Hollywood movies today lack, like a plot and character development and I woman with high enough self esteem that she won't be reduced to a one night stand, palpable chemistry between the actors and a representative of the music industry that is just as unabashedly horrible as the industry itself. The casting was really well done and I can't say enough about Himesh Patel's talent. Just thoroughly enjoyable. "It's not Cold Play, it's not Fix You" THANK GOODNESS!

Really decent Danny Boyle mentioned Jack Barth here
Very enjoyable film. Brief episode near the end where Jack goes to visit 'Lennon' living by himself by the sea; what would John's life have been like without the fame and wealth? But then we wouldn't have the Beatles' music. Just to correct what is written above: the Beatles were not 'one of the most influential bands'. They were the GREATEST rock/pop band ever by a large margin!

Queen were great but Beatles weren't just music. They changed Western culture, fashion, and the whole planet which is why you can make a fun film about a world without them. You would never be able to make a film about a world without Queen, Rolling Stones, Grateful Death, Fleetwood Mac, Beach Boys, Eagles, The Clash.
