In this video we show you how to wire a doorbell. This doorbell wiring diagram will work for all doorbells including smart doorbells like the Ring Doorbell: amzn.to/3534ixe and the Nest Hello smart doorbells.
Wiring a smart doorbell is easy. The most important things to do are get a compatible chime: amzn.to/2LHvOZH and a doorbell transformer with enough power like this one: amzn.to/31H6Uit
My favorite smart doorbells are the Ring Pro: amzn.to/2M9HZxb , Nest Hello and Ring 2 Doorbell: amzn.to/30J8NJY
It's important to make good contact with the doorbell wiring terminals and to make sure you turn the power off before you begin work.

After switching out my transformer, I forgot which wires go where, I spent over 45 minutes fiddling with that thing and saw several videos that did not help. This was exactly what I needed! I wish I would've ran into this video first! Thank you so much!
Great video! Wired my doorbell in minutes with your help!
Thanks James
Haven’t wired one up in a while.
Quick and easy refresher ty!
Thanks! I know for my class, white needs to be the return wire and black/red can be the supply but this is super simple and helpful! Thank you
Thanks for a quick and simple explanation. Replaced an 30 yr. old Nutone intercom with a Wyze video doorbell. Looking at your diagram made me realized I would short my system with the fuse supplied with the vid doorbell. Saved by the bell. Pun unintended.
Finally after two months I got my doorbell working thanks to you. 😀👍👍
FINALLY!!! A great simple video...Thank you
Very helpful, thank you! I've been having a heck of a time finding and replacing the old transformer in my 1930s house. Trying to get this new Ring Pro 2 working :)
Omg I love you. All of the men in my life has told me it's broken and completely useless, where we must open multiple walls for rewiring. Appears the actual bell may be dewired and I'd like a new unit, but I really don't think the wiring needs to be redone. I've never seen them wire it like this.
This is the second home in which ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
Thanks! My door bell was not working. After watching this video, I realized there are two bells inside. I simply moved wire from bell #1 to bell #2 and it’s back in operation. Thanks for the help!
Thank You 👍🏽 for keeping it simple
Awesome! Learned a lot and this material is appreciated, sincere thanks!
Thanks a million. You made that super simple in a world of unnecessary complications!
Best video on how something works i have ever seen ..great job
Clear and to the point. Thank you
Thanks alot my friend!!! Your video made it work for me!!!! Nice job!
Ok so say your installing 2 lorex smart doorbells. Comes with chime boxes. Do i need to wire one chime to the front and one to the rear?? Both going to trans??
Thank you so very much you’re very helpful The way you explain it not complicated though thanks again
Thanks, you were a life saver.
Thank you!
Very clear and accurate. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great job, helped me a lot!
Glad it helped!
You are the best, thank you so much
How do I wire a 2nd door bell? Great vid! Thanks for sharing.
Great explanation👍
Scratched my head for months why I couldn't get my smart doorbell to work, only to now realise I accidentally unhooked a power line when I brodged them. Thank you
Thanks!!
What protocol is used to signal from the doorbell to the chimes that they should make a noise? I guess it isnt just a switch making contact because the light is on on this doorbell and cirrent must flow continuously through a smart doorbell.
I was scratching my head on a defective doorbell. Switch ok, transformer ok, wiring ok. The darn doorbell coil was open. $15 fix. Thanks!!
I have a Nutone and the inside is like this one, except there are four white wires coming out of the top of the black box on the left - the rest of the wires are inside the walls. Which wire goes where?
Thanks. I have recently purchased a Lorex 2K doorbell camera and cannot complete the installation because I cannot find my doorbell chime. I found the transformer which has a current draw. It’s 16.5VAC at the transformer and 1.VAC at the two wires where the doorbell is supposed to be. I’m going to check for shorts in the on the transformer terminal end and both wires. Hopefully I’ll find it.
Thanks for the video. Do you have a video showing how to install the chime with doorbells are the Ring Pro. Thanks in advance.
Hi, Can you hook up the back doorbell too the front doorbell, so when you push the front door doorbell button the back and front will work together at the same time? double the noise! Thanks
Can you use the transformer to supply power to a nest doorbell, without the cime?
3rd terminal in the chimes is usually n/c and is the 'loop-in'.
I fitted my chimes in the middle room; fit bellpush on door.
NOW SWITCH OFF MAINS ELEC. SUPPLY - bell transformer (Tx) is by the CU wired with a few inches of 1.0mm T&E to a 1A cartridge fuse holder in a spare fuseway in CU.
Then run 1 length of 'figure 8' bellwire from push to chime; 2nd length from Tx to chime.
If it's a simple 2-terminal bell, just 'choc. block' each single from the push and Tx or use the 'loop-in' terminal. Other 2 wires go across the chime's supply.
If you don't want the chime on for any reason, just pull the 1A fuse or be posh and use an MCB.
I have no idea what you said, but I think it works well.
To answer a few questions i've seen, from what I've found out: There is a small circuit/whatever that lets a small amount of voltage thru to light the button, then when you press the button it lets ALL the voltage through.
For those of you only seeing a small voltage when using a meter on the button contacts, that is only for the light on the button, you should see the whole 16v or what ever size the transformer is when you press the button, it then completes the circuit to trigger the chime.
I have a situation where at the transformer the wires are not labeled and I dont know which should be the trans and which should be the front. How do I find out which is which? Would something bad happen if I somehow reversed the wires?
All well and good if your chime terminals are clearly labelled. I came here specifically looking how to identify the chime terminals (I have 4 on my chime)
Get this, some weird wiring. Today I installed doorbell, when i went to the chime block to install the chime kit that came with the cam, it's same like the one you showing in this video but
1 wire was terminated to Front terminal, other wire was terminated to Rear terminal, nothing on the Trans terminal. Go figure. Threw me off, so I just wired the same way, and it is working.
I just moved into a new home and the previous owner had a ringdoor bell pro powerkit installed and one wire goes to the front door bell and another to the rear instead of the transformer but it still works. I want to change the door bell chime because it's ancient and not sure if I should move the rear doorbell wire to the transformer screw. And yes there in no rear door bell in house.
My transformer is in the garage my chime is in the house. How do I know which wire is coming from the transformer to plug into the chime on the transformer post and which is coming from the doorbell?
Does it matter if trans on the chime receives a negative or the positive from the transformer.
So I noticed after watching your video that your chime box was upside down and did that to mine and it works like it should. Are you supposed to install them upside down?
What do I need to buy to run three door bells. I have three doors. On the building. We are done framing. I have the 18/2 roll of wire. But I need the hardware, and the chimes ? Thank you.
So I was wondering if you could answer a question. At the chime the wires that I have there are unidentified. Does it matter if the wires are flipped? Will this affect anything?
Do you think it is okay to have two front doorbell buttons (one traditional button, one with video) in parallel, both connect to the chime's "front" terminal? I don't want to use the 'rear' terminal since they are both for front door. I want to add a video doorbell without removing the traditional doorbell. The transformer is 24V 40VA and should have no problem handling multiple doorbells.
My doobell has two transformers and six terminals. It rings front, rear and side. Do you have wiring diagram? Thanks.
Is there a way to figure out which wire is which? We took off the box for the doorbell that has the power, front, and back so now I have no idea which wire goes to which.
My chime does not have a transformer I just connected the 127v directly to it, it has a label that says 6w, would that work with a smart doorbell?
What was the outcome?
would anyone know what would happen if you bridged the front and rear connection screws? I ask because only one plunger is activated when the doorbell button is pressed. Would that make both plungers activate and make the doorbell louder?
I only needed to watch 15 secs of the video to figure out what I was doing wrong. Thanks!
Is an 18v 500mAh transformer enough power as well?
Hi. If I want to eliminate my rear doorbell completely, do I simply disconnect from the rear terminal?
Can you install two door bell with one transformer?
Question . My doorbell is a older one and is marked T and 2 that's it any idea what that means ? Just curious to know .
Is their any way that I can wire a single pole switch as my push button ?
This information actually helped me to fix my door bell. I had to replace the transformer and switch the door bell from front to back door bell because the front door bell was not functioning.
I have four wires coming from the wall. 2/white (twisted together), and 2/red (one-trans, one-front both on the chime), and a 24v transformer (with 8v, and 16v options) which the doorbell/camera I'm installing requires. I need to connect the wires in a way that powers the 24v smart doorbell/camera, AND rings the inside chime. Yet when everything is connected the inside chime does not operate. Of the four wires, one white and one red are live/hot, and the other red and white are not. Am I to switch out the non-live red wire that's connected to the "front" terminal for one of the white (non-live?) wires?
if there is a settings menu in an app, it is likely that feature is currently disabled. Should be able to just turn it back on
I have a one door bell house, a transformer in the garage (backside of electrical panel), and another in the closet close to the front door. There are four wires (two white, two red) in the closet where the transformer is, and a red and white wire from the wall where the chime is. My wiring does not look like your wiring and I am trying to fix my door bell. Please help.
I have a old house I have 2 black wires coming from electrical system hooked up to the old transformer How do I hook up the new transformer that has 3 wires 1black 1 green and 1 white ?
Quick question if possible. Can you bring both wires from the transformer directly? Or must you send one to the chime and button separately? Thanks,
I have the exact same question
Did yall figure it out
What type of wires are you using?
Some door belt come with the diode. ???
my existing doorbell and chime are still good. However, I replaced the existing doorbell with blink video doorbell to see video. After replacing the new blink doorbell, the blink door bell did not ring. Help me
What if you mix up the wires? How do you find out which wire is for the transformer and which wire is for the doorbell
The polarity doesn’t matter
@@nfg79 i had the same question. I have the two same colored wires coming from the hole where the old chime box was. My dumb ass forgot to label which one was the trans and which one was front.
My doorbell looks just like this and still rings, but does not light up. How can I make the light work?
Does the wiring matter? I can't see where the wire from the transformer go to.
good video. thanks
Do you need to have the chime terminal when used for a ring doorbell?
I wonder the same. Did you try it?
Where should I install the chime doorbell? Is there a certain spot it should be mounted at?
Wherever the wires are accessible and you can hear the chime. Typically they are near a stairway so the sound carries or in a central part of the home. For larger homes people wire two so they can be heard throughout the home.
if you want to get rid of the chime would you be able to wire the transformer wire directly to the door bell?
Yes you can wire the doorbell directly to the transformer and forgo the chime
How is the light of the doorbell permanently on? But doesnt sound the chime till you push on the switch
Dont understand where the lights getting its power from with out a circuit being made
exactly!! like no one asks!
Does the wires on the doorbell itself matter which place they go (top or bottom)?
Nope!
@@OneHourSmartHome Thanks, got it to work. I had to reconnect the wires on the transformer (Front & Transformer). It didn't work at first, switched them around, and it was golden. I appreciate the reply!
What colors belong to what??
How much do you charge for a door bell installation like this??
What if your house is wired for a doorbell with this wire, 4 pairs of wire colors (orange, blue, green and brown) which wires do you use?
Out of assumption, 1 pair should be coming from the transformer (hot)
The other 3 pairs should be Front, Rear and Side doorbell.
Only issue is now to find out which one you're trying to use and wire it according to this video.
If the doorbell button is getting HOT what can it be?
I just changed my chime to the same one you have bc ours was old(didn't even have a cover). It worked fine until I changed it and now it sounds weird. Idk what I did wrong 🤷♀️.
Sometimes the wires or the cover can be touching the chime bar on top which will dampen the sound check this first.
my House was built in the 1950s and the wires are all the same color. pls help
My house don’t have that transformer
Start watching from 1:10 unless you want to know what a transformer is
I need a Diagram to can conect my Nest Doorbell LOL
The doorbell was installed upside down lol
Yes, I know you’re busy polluting the atmosphere
