@@georgex231 Hey, usually it's around 5k to 7k pixels wide. Really depends on whether you want that extra control when you zoom in. And also if you have a high res screen too.
Hi Victor, I was wondering, was there ever a time when a painting like this took you 5 or 10+hrs, & if so, how long did it take you to get down to 2hrs?
Thank you so much for the useful information! It's great that you match the overall tone and manner, and I wonder if you refer to the reference in advance or work after calculating the color combination of brightness.
hEE thanks so much, glad you like it! Well in this case, I didn't use that many refs, I looked at a few oil paintings from masters to get some inspiration, and I used the lighthouse reference image just to get the structure of the object down, and some local color cues. The resulting value and color from the light hitting the lighthouse and the rocks, is a combination of the light source value and color and the local color of those objects. You take into account the distance and the intensity of the light source. As well as what material are the lit objects, how rough etc. But in case you are stuck you can always find other photo references with maybe a similar light scenario you might want. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much Lei! Yes, I will definitely include in future videos the thumbnail, black and white composition sketches. To show some idea generation process as well. Glad you like the vid!
Hello Victor! I'm a big fan of your videos! Do you have any video about how you choose colors for your paintings? if there isn't any could you please make one -..-? it will be a big help!
Hey Al, so glad to hear it, thanks! I will try to cover this sometimes in the future for sure. Work closely with your refs, whenever you are planning ahead your painting. Colour is not so tricky, especially if your values are good, then it's much easier to make it work. Also a good habit would be to do studies whenever you can, from movies or animated feature films, I learned a lot by doing those. Also you can always refer to classic colour schemes when composing your image (triadic, complementary, etc) It's a complex matter so these are just a few points.
That was really awesome brother.... love your videos they are so much helpful...I have a question brother. How can I find the perfect shadow colour by using hue sliders?
Yo Victor! I love your art, videos and of course concept art (otherwise I wouldn't be here), since you're doing the UA-cam thing and creating some public why don't you make some explorations you wanted to make before and turn it into a video? Different approaches, themes, other areas of concept art (hard surface, character design, creatures, etc) and some polls to see what your public is up to watch every once in a while. Have fun with it and a nice week man, thx for the great videos!
Hey, Nando thank you so much! Yes, you are right, for quite some time I am thinking about how to introduce a bit of variety in my content, and there are so many cool options. One thing that stops me is usually the time constraints I have right now, work, and other gigs. Also, I need to figure out how to actually provide value in those videos, but overall your ideas are great, any of them could work. Well, I hope I will organize things and get something started in the upcoming videos. Thanks for the ideas man.
Amazing video! learning so much every time! i wanted to ask, i installed your brushes, but the tip doesnt tilt the same way as yours does, can i fix it somehow?
Hey Ikar, thanks so much for watching! Alright so, when you hit F5 you see the brush settings, on the left close to the top, you will find Shape dynamics, tick that, and click it. Then on the right, you will see the Angle Jitter option. Where it's written Control:Off you can turn it to Pen Tilt, this will allow you to rotate the brush by tilting your pen. If you have the Wacom ArtPen (usually it's sold separately) you can also change it to Rotation, that will rotate the brush tip as you rotate the pen. Hope this helps!
Awesome tutorial as always. I'm always wondering, how your images are so sharp. My final images look blurry and i don't know know how to achieve sharp brush strokes like you have. Any advise? Thank you :)
Hey Dark Blue, thanks so much! About sharpening the image, I guess at the end when your image is done, you can use a bit of unsharp filter ( Filter > Sharpen > unsharpen ) There are just a couple of settings there, so you can play around. But I would recommend not to overdo it to much, because it veeery quickly becomes gimmicky, so I guess a bit would help.
hi victor! just wanna say your videos help me a lot as someone who's new to environment painting. i just wanna ask what canvas size do you usually work on?
Hey, I've actually always wanted to ask a professional opinion from an experienced artist. I'm pretty comfortable with my sketching skills, and whenever I add the colours in, I always paint below the lines first, just to make sure that the lines act as a blueprint, but when I proceed to paint over the lines, and add composition and lightings, I seem to face a paranoia where I want to paint over the lines, but it doesn't actually look that good, compared to my original sketch look, when I paint over the lines, the whole satisfactory look of the sketch disappears. How would you advice on practicing to paint and blend over the lines?
You could duplicate your sketch layer, turn off the copy’s visibility, then start painting under the sketch layer. Once you feel comfortable enough with it, you could merge the paint and sketch layer and work from there. Your sketch copy layer will still exist, and you’ll be painting over the lines too. This is the technique used by Sinix, minus the duplicate the sketch layer part.
Hey there, thanks for watching! Go to Image (up on the top menu) then image rotation then Flip canvas horizontally. But in the hotkeys settings you should probably assign a hotkey like ctrl-q in my case.
Hey everyone! Thanks so much for watching! As usual, there is a free brush pack in the description!
What canvas dimensions do you usually use??
I wish i could be half talented as you.thanks a lot, it helps me to lose the fear this week.

Hi Victor, I was wondering, was there ever a time when a painting like this took you 5 or 10+hrs, & if so, how long did it take you to get down to 2hrs?
Once you get some skill (fundamentals are important, btw), it usually takes 30-60 minutes to paint something like this concept.

Hey Skullstride! Well actually I delete the linework completely after I've already put down some colour, I switch off the drawing layer.
