@@samdoesarts no swearing Sam.
my instructors always told us "custom brushes won't help you improve, they're there to help you shorten the process. If you don't know what you're doing, they won't save you."
basically he’s saying the brush isn’t the problem, its you. 😂
I've always known I'm a problem
Facts
💀😂😂
fr 😂
basically, he’s saying so if you want easy grass clouds or scratches go buy some texture brushes
I forgot who said this but in my experience it's always been true. " Your lack of fundamentals will show" and i don't think custom brushes will help you with that.
Preach
if your painting style relies on heavy textured brush strokes you are gonna have a bad time with the default round. might even be impossible unless you change your style to fit that
@@kipop3611 the existence of custom brush is to save time

Bro your videos are the perfect inspiration whenever im feeling the art block coming on.
I am glad
You're my favorite digital artist because you don't brag about your abilities but instead show us that drawing is all about practice and hard work.
The majority of the digital artists don't even do that
Most artists don't do this
a full-pledged and detailed environment in only 1hr and 30mins is crazyyyy
I use to think I needed to use custom brushes but this video proved me wrong. Thank you for making this video^^
I'm honestly just looking for a brush to colour block: not the basic circle but something with a bit of opacity and texture. So I can use just own brush throughout the painting.
"It's been an hour and thirty minutes..."
Me: That would take all day, on a good day.
Beautiful work!

Love your environment drawings they all are soft and have a mood to it!!!
A terrible artist blame his tools, a great one uses anything
Wow great point!!
A fantastic artist steals his tools
You don't know! You weren't there! It was the brush!

Interestingly, the same can be said for martial arts.
For some reason, I prefer the one with the default brushes...meaning, I wish I could paint like this. But if I see the one with the custom ones, I will always know that it's your work :) Both are very beautiful as always. It always looks so easy when you do it.
This guy's gonna be so much more famous than today, so i just wanna say: Here before 20k

I should really try painting environments more often. Hopefully one day I'll be as good as you are 🤞
If it wasn't obvious already, I LOVE this piece! I'm only halfway through but it's soooo amazing 😍
I love this message. I’m a traditional charcoal pencil artist and I got procreate to be a way to not have to take out all the supplies all the time. I soon found myself overwhelmed with all the layers and brushes. 3 years into procreate and I’m finally going back to my roots. Very few brushes and layers. Like he said at the end of the day brushes and layers don’t make the art, you do. Since I let that go I have found peace and more enjoyable time doing art. People can’t believe it’s digital or traditional unless I tell them.
Layers and brushes aren’t bad! I’m definitely a huge believer that you make the art and those are just tools. Focus on your art and not the tools. Practice helps! Don’t give up.
Thank you so much for this! You’re really a role model as I get back into painting, videos are really nice and engaging and super inspirational!
I'm starting with digital now, I have a bit of experience with traditional painting, and this video helped me a lot. I feel like a beginner using custom brushes end up putting a lot of information that doesnt help to solve the picture, once you know what is missing from your painting is when you will need a custom brush.
0:11 sometimes up there dosent help but anyway nice video! nice job!
Yeah smooth brain problems I can relate
I love your art style so much! It's so creative!
I love your landscape drawings! I cant draw them very well but yours look amazing!
I love this! I think it could also be applied to any medium- to start art you don’t need expensive materials but practice and skill can get you far ❤ I also love seeing people use custom brushes and textures to add a sense of controlled chaos and freedom to art. I’m a perfectionist so seeing people use different materials to achieve unique looks instead of doing every detail by hand is inspiring too
-7:36- there’s a wow face in the left tree and it made my day 😂😂, guess even the default brush is surprised that someone is using him and doing good art!
Btw, I use default brushes too, but I also use sketchbook so .. 🤷♂️
I have found my favorite digital artist 🖌️❣️
I always believed that I was bad at art because I didn't have the right brush. It wasn't until I actually started getting better when I realized that brushes are more of a time saving tool.
Fancy brush won't make you a better artist, but it might make you faster, if give you a satisfying feel to your work.
My best tutorial! Period! Beginner who learns landscape painting.
Fancy brushes ARE super satisfying and fun though! 😂 But definitely agree you don’t need them to make good quality art
I agree with you entirely about it not being the brush that does the brushing. But, at the same time, the psychological edge you get when you are excited about what a brush can do can translate into your work and take things in different directions. Also, the immediacy and deliberateness of the stroke is an important aspect to all this, and if the default brush means you have to carefully craft every texture, that could come across as being more stiff.
Just philosophizing here. Thanks for this video. I dug it :-]
everytime i got stuck with my stuffs. i always watch ur videos again sam. and apply ur tips. it helps me alot
l love your voice.
makes me really calm for some reason.
You make it look so easy GODDAMNIT!
The best part about watching your videos is that I don't even do digital art but still I watch every single video u post!!! ❤️
To be honest I love his older videos so much more.. still love the new ones but I wish he makes more videos like these since these ones catered less to trends but more art knowledge
I been watching you for a week now and to be honest im staring to fall in love with your vids. Keep it up
OMG you really give alot of spirit to more work on! Thank you so much Sam!
I think we all need to focus on developing the skill and learning the basics, the fundamentals and then thinking about the brushes and all the little details, because making this video may seem like anyone with a round brush can do that, but in fact , everyone can do this if they studied hard
Dang!!!! I know this was a huge amount of work but thank you for choosing a photo with alot of detail! It was very informative and I appreciate it!
"I'm evolving" hahahaha I died!
Thanks. Love the simplicity and firm of the original brush, and how you deal with the leaves and light and shadows.
Didn't forget to record , I'm evolving ~ Sam Yang 2020
Watching this a year after it was posted and a year into Procreate. I have bought custom brushes (cough cough Sams, lol) and can really say that the procreate brushes are just as good, it all about how you use it and your fundamental knowledge. I've scaled back to using a lot of the default brushes. A lot of the brushes don't work for my workflow. People always think that as a trained graphic designer I'd be good at digital painting. I know how to manipulate text, color, images, and shapes for print designs. I wasn’t trained to paint on a computer/ tablet. I was trained to paint using oils and try and to achieve a realistic look. That tends to translate into my work where I can paint a 10+ hour drawing a make it look realistic. Being more semi-realistic/ stylized is something new for me. I'd love to one day get to the point where i'm panting something in an hour to two hours. ( I have kept some of Sam brushes as they work better than some of the Procreate ones; love the round brush, airbrush, the blending brush and hard eraser)
Me who just use Ibis paint x, although there are custom brush now for ibis,i still use dip pen, fade brush, and air brush for mostly everything lol.
Both of them are gorgeous 🥺❤️ the colours are so bright and happy!!!! I especially love the stairs and the custom brush textured trees! There is slightly more to look at on the textured painting, but the default is still so charming 🥰
dang this video came out quick! i loved the rendering of the stairs with the default brushes but with the custom brushes it did change the mood to feel more chill
It's a real pleasure to see you working on this frames.
The lasso tool is so useful for kind of backgrounds like woww
Omg you are a asome artist, the first version whit out texture blow my mind, saludos de Colombia 🥺❤️✨
I already know this.
I just....
I just like how pretty they look-
I barely use any of them-
You're honestly so encouraging ☺️❤️
This made me realize it’s very similar to traditional painting thanks for this I learned new things! Mostly how I can draw stairs I usually have a very hard time with stairs because I never really drew them
I just....wow. This is incredible! I got one of your prints yesterday and can't wait to hang it up!
my heart melts, them cats are so cuuuuuute
this artwork is so beautiful like your eyes
Just found your channel your art is amazing! I use both default and custom brushes.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I always thought painting background was a total pain, but since I discover your videos, I realized how much environments are important and I enjoy use some Pinterest references to express that ! Thank you for making this video, cause now, I know it’s possible to get something AMAZINGLY beautiful even without crazy brushs,, it sure takes more time to find/choose brushs then to actually starting to paint and do it right,,, but I still really need a lot more notions and practice 😅 thank you ☺️
I think more than brushes option the use of perfect color scheme is most effective

i think its like comparing mouse and drawing tab, by both ways we can draw but drawing tab makes it simple with all pen pressure and all, same for the brush default brushes can also help us recieve same result however custom brushes helps us creating the same yhing with ease and in less amount of time
his environmental style reminds me a lot of studio ghibli and i love it so much ❤❤❤❤💕💞
can we get more videos on environments? they're my favourite!!
Same bro
Both are very, very lovely pieces. I think that the custom brushes only looks slightly better to my eyes because you have indicated lighting better in my taste.
Maybe because, like you mentioned, the default brushes meant you have to do it all manually, you're not as familiar (not unfamiliar though) with the work flow, and again, like you said, the fact you've used the custom brushes more meant you could be looser with it.
But all in all... Damn, you're right. There's not a SIGNIFICANT difference between the two! Thanks for this!
Hey man this is greats learning material! Thanks so much!
Marco Bucci did a painting recently on one of his vids with just a default photoshop round brush and the results were phenomenal.
I thought the default was perfect but then he added the custom brushes.
Love that painting process and that bgm is ❤..
i knew ur gonna go big since i subbed 5 months ago. u explain things very well! thank for inspiring me whenever i feel im lacking :)
Sam: you don't need these fancy brushes to make a good painting
Also Sam in the caption: buy my custom brushes here
Custom brushes are like boyfriends, you don't need them, but they are nice to have.
I learn so much while watching his videos.........😃😃😃 You get an urge to draw after watching him draw....🤩🤩🤩 I love watching him draw.... 😍😍😍 please teach me more about how can I use brushes well 🙏🙏🙏🙏
cant miss sam videos
you can change your default brush's settings to get that texture mate
someone actually courageous enough to say it. custom brush is overrated. your unique style is your CUSTOM brush. thank you!
Love your videos....I used to worry a lot about brushes but your art tell me otherwise 😉 your art videos are the reason for my improvement in art😍you inspire me a lot 😘 I have told this in these comments a lot and I don't mind saying it again....love your art💕
How about how to create water texture in next video😉
My favorite artist right now 😊❤
Its very inspiring to see how you start a drawing i personally only draw Manga/Anime style but i still can Learn a lot of your drawings
Exactly! It’s not the tools, it’s the user... if the user has the ability, custom brushes help your workflow & give you the ability to faster & add more expression.
hey Sam, love your videos, really inspiring stuff, just wanted to know if someday you can make a video on some tips to get started in digital art 😅
im drawing while watching this idk bruh his voice is just so soothing
Wonderful work I loved it ♥️
What a beautiful painting
The round brush makes it look like a guache painting made by someone from the ghibli studio. I'm in. Imma use the round brushes from now on.
Something I really struggle with, as I use pretty basic brushes, I don’t understand how to get the foliage look. I saw you paint it in, and it looked kind of like splotchy paint, but I just can’t figure out how to accomplish this myself.
You need to practice a lot.
@@rhalum practice what
I absolutely love these videos. I’m someone who doesn’t like to use custom brushes a lot when you can do it with default brushes.
Just a simple recommendation: I know many people who spend tons of money on many art programs. But I never understand why. I am someone who loves to use procreate and photoshop. But at the same time when I use photoshop to draw I’m usually told that’s the wrong art program. Can you please do a video about art programs and explain this.
This is really interesting! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It's especially interesting for me as I notice I really enjoy the clear quality of the version without the custom brushes. I love using paper textures (esp brushes with them included) but this made me think if it would not be better for me to apply the texture effect last step. Because sometimes it feels to mach. Ah anyways. Thank you!
I adore your work... Thank you so much for sharing your precious advices
Hey, Sam, loving the videos. Any chance you could put the inset video of you painting on the bottom left, for future videos, so we can see how you work with the layers?
I love your art style, you inspired me with your content!
I've done both. If you want that painterly look you'll need custom brushes for that
Nice drawing, I really love it! I wanted to ask how you choose when to start a new layer - for every new shape of color? I tried it like that and I was overwhelmed by too many layers (at the end I put them all together, also because I can easier use the pipette for colors...). But having each "block of color", like a certain wall, definitely helped when something should be only behind it....
And I saw that you first draw the basic green of the stairs as the main color of the picture, and then moving from the foreground step by step to the background.... I think that way is the best way, but I still struggle to not get lost during this process... ^^
Thank you a lot for uploading your proccess of drawing!!
you are the best one at environment art
I feel like the general message is incredibly true, completely agree you can make great art with any tools...but I will say I found this a little harder in photoshop (vs Krita and Procreate, which have bomb default brushes). Photoshop I got a custom brush pack I liked way better. Idk if it was just me. I do like photoshop though otherwise.
Yeah you can definitely draw using basic brushes. But it takes way longer than if you just used a pre-textured brush especially with stuff like tree bark and rocks etc.
oh my god i love this guy so much ughhh
Manually painted one looks organic for obvious reason. So I love the process amd result of the first one more. I am thinking of adding some grainy texture and opacity variety with one brush and try to paint with that. Mikko has a good video on this on his channel- Angrymikko
(just a suggestion) but could you please put the camera view on the bottom *left* corner so people can see how you manage your layers?
I do, it makes me confident even if I can do the same thing without a custom brush
I love your art style!
Default brushes or custom brushes Sam still paints environments beautifully
tbh I liked the default brushes better but both of the paintings were great!
