Vile though these programmes are, millions of people love them! They don't just slavishly watch them, they buy the obligatory merchandise and they copy the fashions and behaviours 🤦 if you criticise your labeled elitist. We have undermined the BBC to such a point that it only survives by pandering to the lowest common denominator with the sort of pap that can be sold overseas because none of us pay for a TV licence anymore 🤷 what's the answer??

Whenever I watch these programmes from this era I feel so,so sad for my first husband who couldn't keep himself out of the nick, right through from the late 70' s to the mid nineties. I used to hear such awful stories about slop buckets and pp9s in socks! He also kept a lot bottled up inside,it would come out with the drink and the drugs. I used to go the rounds with the probation staff, even after we were divorced trying to get him a rehab place. They never even remembered my name until the end of the appointment. The system just reinforced the problems again and again and again. Now he's just an old man full of regrets. Such a waste of a good, bright man who got handed a bad deal and spent the rest of his life trying to get back out of the cycle.

I was down the block in Hull this is what the block is like broken Windows too high to block up a cardboard table and chair thst someone had poured water under the gloss paint so it's sagged and was useless ( I ended up getting another 6-weeks for that down there after I got out after 8 weeks) a metal bed with no mattress from 7 a.m. to 7pm at night and me in only a pair of underpants far too big for me but ended up a godsend in the end close to months I spent like that at the age of just 16 years originally for forgetting my prison number and forgetting to say sir

They appoint middleclass do gooders, even today, to inspect prisons.
these naive people are tricked and hood winked. Why not appoint ex prisoners to inspect prisons?
My first day in Brixton, the screw demanded I call him sir. I refused stating the only man I will call sir, has the Queens commission.

    • @LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts

To be fair, a lot of these 'middle class do-gooders ' have written very strongly critical reports over the decades, most have courted any publicity they can get for the cause, and there have been several very high profile resignations with all the attendant publicity about the protests about conditions. The real problem is that the newspapers tend to dismiss them as 'middle class do-gooders ' and mock their complaints. The general public has never been famous for wanting to weigh up the facts and look at the picture of society as a whole and what would work for the best of all. People want vengeance, easy scapegoats, and they want quick headlines, not long term investment.

I done time in the mid 90s young offenders institutes and it was much the same, screws torturing prisoners mentally and physically, the prisons I was in were still run under the old Borstal regime, it was a tough time to be locked up, nothing like today's prisons, no tvs and PlayStations you were lucky if you had small battery operated radio.

Even the restraint jackets that replaced the body belts are inhumane, i worked in the prison laundry and we would get the odd restraint jacket in for cleaning and i tried one on, very uncomfortable i couldnt imagine how uncomfortable it would be wearing it for long periods i only had it on for a couple of minutes and i couldnt wait to get the thing of.

@@Nick-fy1zp The handcuffs were fastened to the secure leather bels and one hand was supposed to be released to allow the prisoner to eat but in practice this rarely happened. In Strangeways once the syringe full of Chlorpromozine had been administered the belt and handcuffs were superfluous. Hardly humane.
