INFO: Crack The Skye is the fourth (fifth) album by heavy metal band Mastodon. Released on March 24 2009 the album took the band to new heights in the metal community and created a noticeable dent in the progressive rock world. Being a concept album, the lyrics take you on a journey through time and space, wormholes and 18th century russia. I’ll explain that one later. Some fans regard this album as the last phase in a set of four albums that the band released. The last album to feature a sound that leaned towards more traditional progressive metal. And thus separating their fanbase into two groups. Those who like their old stuff, Crack The Skye and albums released before that and those who like everything from The Hunter and their newer albums. No matter which group or albums you prefer the most, it’s 10 years since the album was released this year, so i thought it would be a great time to look at some of the history behind this record.

Personally Leviathan blew my mind when I first heard it. Granted I’m not the most experienced when it comes to Metal, but that album really got me to be more open minded towards the genre and it’s many sub genres. Just a perfect blend of raw intensity and ambitious storytelling.

This one is significant to me for a lot of reasons. My wife and I were moving to a new town, about four hours from where we'd met. We bought our first house, and I was facing this existential dread about the place. I remember switching over to a local rock station in the car as the city came into view and hearing those titanic first notes of Oblivion for the first time. Nothing in metal had really spoken to me in a long time. This was a beast of a whole different type, thick and heavy on a whole new level.
I couldn't really digest it the first time around, but I checked it out immediately in the hotel on my laptop and was blown away. When I talked to my friends back home about it, I know I must've sounded demented "Dude, it's like Genesis or Yes. Practically the whole band sings like it's an Alabama track. But the wall of gritty rhythm at the center of it is barbaric metal."
For me, I pretty much love the whole gamut. New and Old. Oblivion roped me in, but I fell in love with Leviathan soon after. The talent and diverse influences on display is nuts.

We have a thing in common then. That's the first song that caught my attention too. I remember buying the
album after just a few listens to the other songs. I wasn't even sure if i was gonna like it as an album. But little
did i know that they would become one of my favorite bands. After Crack The Skye i bought Leviathan and Blood
      Mountain. They're all friggin masterpieces!
Anyways thanks for sharing that story! That's so cool man. Taste-wise i gotta say i'm leaning towards their old stuff. Love The Hunter from beginning to end though. And some of the songs from Once More and Emperor are starting to grow on me. Cheers from Norway.

Every album is amazing. Love Mastodon, my favorite band personally. Some fans are just unable to grow and process change as the band grows and changes. Personally Blood Mountain would be a good album to cover or Emperor of Sand.

Blood Mountain it is then. I have a hard time choosing a favorite album from these guys. Leviathan, Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain are all so close to each other in my top 3. And for their new stuff, i'm digging The Hunter. And some of the songs off of their 2 recent albums are growing on me these days.

Mastodon grew up with me. When I found them in 2004 Remission and Leviathan were the perfect albums for my 18 year old mind set. Each album has grown and changed, becoming the soundtrack of my life. The sounds get tighter, more control, more mature. Now at 33, Emperor of Sand and its themes are much more in line with my life and experiences than the early stuff. Dont get me wrong though, Mother Puncher is still some of the best shit.....

Excellent video. I finally got around to listening to this album over the summer and it absolutely blew me away. My experience was this: The first time it was great, I loved the music and some of the lyrics went over my head. The second time through the music got even better and the story became a bit easier to get a handle on. The third time, I had read about the story and appreciated how the music ebbed and flowed around the 'beats' of the story. Then I watched their making of videos and more about the death of Brann's sister and Brent's injury. When I went back to listen to it a fourth time, it all came together. The deeper meaning and intention behind the music fully came out and Scott Kelly's vocals on Crack the Skye (Mama, don't let them take her) gave me chills and nearly moved me to tears.
This album is an all-time great that only gets better the more you listen to it and the more you know about it's production and background.

I adore mastodon. What I like most about them is their harmonic sound changes during a song. Jaguar God can be a good current, Ole’ Nessie is an early work example for what I think. Also I always get the feeling that these guys try their best to grow themselves in each and every song/performance. In every album there is at least one song that make me say “wow how can he do that?” for every member of the band.

Except, you know, it isn't Prog. It's Post and Psych. Besides that I truly enjoyed your video. On the note of Remissions heaviness, they're drawing a lot of inspiration from Neurosis's Through Silver In Blood. It takes until CtS for them to fully come into their own. Much like how Cult of Luna was seen as an Isis clone until Somewhere Along the Highway.
All things being said, I'm a massive Post Metal fan. It cuts quite close to home every time I hear Prog fans worshiping Mastodon, Tool and even Distant Dream while shitting on Isis, The Ocean, Baroness, Pelican, Alcest, Yob and more. I feel that when discussing this topic, Prog fans tend to get defensive and try to claim that prog is better, as if it wasn't subjective in the first place. Prog far overshadows Post when it comes to popularity to be sure, but I think disregarding a genre because it isn't as popular, is exactly what metalheads tried to get away from when they diverge from pop in the first place.
I would love to hear you talk about Neurosis's A Sun That Never Sets or even if you just gave it a listen and got back to me about it. That would make my week.
Either way, have a good one dude. Thanks for the video.
