My grandmother always said, “put on a little lipstick. You’ll feel better.” I never did. But, she wore it in the hospital before she died. It may not make me feel better. But, it made her feel like she could take on the world!
Fun fact: The red shade that Elizabeth Arden created during WW2 was actually made to match the red piping on the military uniforms and it was issued to all women in the service in their make up kit. The shade was eventually known as "Victory Red". Bésame Cosmetics actually sells a reproduction of this shade on their website as well as other period accurate shades from various decades in history.
I've been a makeup artist and selling cosmetics sense the late 60's but now that I'm retired, I'm a portrait artist. So can you imagine how interesting this talk was!?!?! Thanks for being you, Bailey. By the way, I'm 75 and still wear makeup every day.
Awh the end was such a full circle moment. I’ve worked at ulta for almost 7 years and what I enjoy the most is when I’m able to help a guest find a product that makes them feel beautiful, and watching their face light up when they look at themselves in the mirror. I tell guests all the time “makeup is to ENHANCE the beauty you already have. It doesn’t make you beautiful.” Makeup is so special to me, I love this video. Thank you!
I work at a makeup counter and to be honest I have not been feeling it lately. I’ve been under a lot of stress. But this video has renewed my love of makeup artistry. Definitely wearing red lipstick tomorrow
I had always heard about Madam CJ Walker but never about Eunice Johnson and they’re both so revolutionary. Thank you for shedding light on people of color’s stories as well
The queen buried with her lip paints and Bailey: “Imma need two coffins cause I’ve got some faves” 😂😂😂 “please make sure I’m buried with my MAC lipstick” 😂😂😂😂

I constantly end up cracking up at your tangent side convos.. girl you really brighten up my day with your videos and quirky and inappropriate sense of humor
Bailey literally makes me choke on my tea with her way of telling stories! 😂 seriously though, I would love an episode on the dark history of skin bleaching/whitening. I dont know if this would make an interesting episode but it's so common and it's dangerous and I'd love to know more about its origins. Thanks for another intriguing and enlightening episode Bailey!❤❤❤
I love me some history. Every time I’m watching Dark History I find myself pausing and looking up some more on subjects like Queen Puabi. Never even heard of her. Amazing what we can learn if we broaden our horizons.
Ok, I know I've said this before, but does anyone else really want bailey to put out those jammies she's wearing on her merch. I love them. They're like the best to wear and cozy up and watch her videos 😊❤❤
My mother wouldn’t even go to the mailbox without lipstick! Her color…Revlon’s Blasé Apricot. I keep her lipstick on my makeup table, she was 89 when she passed, and yes, she was wearing lipstick! 💋💄
❤ my mother is still the same way. Mary Kay doesn't even make her color anymore. But, gosh darnit, she's gonna find it! Love that you keep your mom's color on your makeup table. ❤ for you & your momma.
Fun fact: they still use lead in lipstick in many major brands. If you'd like to see if your own lipstick contains lead, simply swatch a few swipes onto your hand, take a solid gold ring, and rub it back and forth over the lipstick swatch. If the swatch begins turning black, it does contain lead. I hope this is helpful!
@@ashleylouise6467 I don't actually, but have tried it on department store brands I owned, and it works. I used a 14k yellow gold ring to test it out. Thanks for asking!
Makeup does give you confidence. This ups your mood and gives you strength mentally to take on society. It accentuates your natural beauty by adding complimentary colors, just like you said...Painting! Love it.
This is by far one of my most favorite episodes. I am a nurse, and when I was still a student we were highly encouraged to put make up on as to cover the stress and non-sleep nights showing on our faces so we don’t look as pale as our patients. I then started to use makeup almost on a daily basis. It is fun and definitely can boost one’s self esteem. It is so interesting how far along this industry has been thriving in human’s history. ❤
Every time my cousin sleeps over she'll ask how is my BFF doing?.. I'm like girl what are you talking about?.. "The girl who applies makeup and talks about scary things on UA-cam" 😂😅 I died 😂 and answered "Bailey?" She said "yes! Where's your laptop? She's adorable 💕 thanks Bailey for being a part of my family ❤
Yes!! Aqua Tofana!!!😂😂 Also, I'm so happy that Madam CJ Walker, Fashion Faire, etc., we all highlighted. As a WOC, those are names that were always present my home, either through conversation or with actual products. I'm too young to have had Walker Haircare in my home, but Ebony magazine and Fashion Faire was present. Thank you, Bailey, for always seeing POC in general and including our varied histories in your storytelling.
In college I did a project about makeup in the USA in throughout the 1900s focusing on the intersection of society/pop culture and public policy/FDA/ingredient safety and it was so fun, I read some of the sources you mention in this episode!
I loved wearing makeup. I'm an old lady now and never wear it. Thank you Bailey for entertaining me. I am healing from hip surgery. I look forward to your videos.
