Danny, I played 18 last week, but on back 9 I started to do just this (by coincidence), keeping club head outside hands, lead arm as straight and for as long as possible whilst staying centred. The difference was amazing from wedges up to 5 wood. It is great to watch this video and instead of saying “I must try that”, I can say “I’ve tried this and can promise you it works”….excellent teaching as usual !

I learned the most from one fella that was 74. He was BOMBING them 240 down the pipe and EFFORTLESS.

Another top notch video Danny. I've been fortunate enough to have been a scratch golfer most of my adult life, and this movement is the one which causes me, and many other players the most difficulty. When I go 'off the boil', my 'go to fix' is that first movement away from the ball. When I get tired, I have a tendency to roll my wrists slightly, and this causes the problems you demonstrate so clearly. Simple things tend to work in life, and that's why I enjoy your videos so much. You have the knack of simplifying things which many other coaches make overly complex. Great stuff

    Hi Danny,
I started golf a year ago and watched a zillion of golf posts. This one is a game changer. No need to think over dozen of things through te different fazes of the swing; key is the Y take away and the right arm under the left arm during the down swing. The bonus is that a lot of things (pushing on left foto, tilting of body, squaring the face, ...) come kind of automatically!! In adition, this drill works as well for hybrids/woods. your simple demonstrations and explanation of how a club swing and face turn shows how every club should make contact with that little white ball to make club face be king. Just looking at your swing in this video is a reflection of how I have been swinging a club. I had been stricken with knee pain due to my left knee needing a replacement. From late 2019 up to 2023, I spent more time lying in bed with an ice pack or a cube unit applying ice water application to my injured knee. in late 2023 and early 2024, was I able to swing a club that my knee did not attack me with pain, and then Covid came along and back in bed I discovered my body resting. Watching your video and the drills have been an eye opener as just how to correctly swing the club to make contact with that little white ball.

Wow and wow!! At 56, I've been noticing a loss of distance lately. A part of me refuses to believe that it's an age thing and so I've tried to understand the problem more from a technical perspective.
Today, I had a 20 minute wait for a bay at our local range. As I waited, I watched this video and did the drills. Off 8.6, I have a reasonable handle on my swing, but then I started hitting balls.
Good lord, my 52 degree was previously 75m, 80 at best. Today I put it on the 116m green.
My 9i was close to 105, today I was hitting it 120+.
My 7i, usually 130ish - today I put it past the 145 green. Etc.
    Driver was amazing too.
Getting in the right position and generating power with the body, not a set of flapping chicken wings seems to be the solution to my problem!!
Anyway - HUGE thank you Danny. This has done so much more than give me more repeatable, reliable distance. It has given me some confidence that I'm not quite yet "past it"! Cheers and yippeee mate, from Sydney - Dave

@@DanielMaude You're very welcome and thank you!
Having thought about it last night (when I was trying to sleep), I think the breakthrough was the horizontal club drill and the feeling of having the trail arm in the right positon - against my chest.
Adding to that, the feeling of a slower downswing with a powerful turn of the hips and the resulting arm action (not the other way around) is what I've been searching for in recent months.
The other part of the story, is that I have a 13yo son, who at 39 kg and only 153cm, has started hitting his irons further than me. He has a h'cap of 3.9 now and being super competitive, loves it that he takes a 9 where I'll take an 8.
Now, thanks to you, I'm going to give him a real shock next time we play!

Danny, I don't like to comment on your videos until I take the ideas to the range or course and see how they work. Well, this one was brilliant. It clearly illustrated to me how you close the clubface without flipping the hands. I went to the range this morning and hit balls into a wind that was quartering in from the right at 20 to 30 kph with gusts to 50. My iron shots seemed wholly unaffected, except for the distance loss you might expect.
I am curious, though. I have been following your channel for quite awhile now and I do not recall you teaching this particular method before. In your video with Pete Cowan, he talked about turning the right arm down, which created much interest and confusion on your channel and others. Is this technique an elaboration on Pete's advice? No matter, as I said, brilliant. Thanks again.

    • @DanielMaude

  • @gerryvanackeren2520
    @gerryvanackeren2520 2 місяці тому

Excellent! Here is one thing that has help me when applying this particular lesson. I found that once I achieved the completion of my backswing (using this specific method), I allow my arms simply to drop. This is followed by the turning of my hips. Not necessarily aggressive, but smooth. I’m feeling this creates additional swing speed far quicker/faster than if I attempt to my use my arms to create ‘swing speed’. There is way too much temptation to use your arms instead of your hips to create swing speed. It doesn’t work! This lesson truly teaches golf is not an arm swing, but a body swing.

Re: Step 3, rolling the forearms; Something that helped me was a thought/feeling from Michelle Wie…
A lot of people coming over the top have a cupped left wrist which opens the club face. We want that left wrist to be bowed to help square the club face.
To bow the left wrist, think of a motorcycle throttle on your left hand, but instead of twisting down as if speeding up, DO THE OPPOSITE and try to hold it through impact.
Just another way of accomplishing the same goal with the forearms.

Danny, really great stuff. My coach explained that the motion from that belt high (right palm to the sky) to impact is achieved by the right wrist "shaking hands" down, if that makes sense. One doesn't try to "flip" the palm closed, but rather, as the body is rotating, thinking of the right pinky finger coming down towardwards (as if trying to touch the right elbow). It moves the right hand from a cupped position to a flat right wrist. This also helps with a long extension post impact. (it all happens in a millisecond, so its very hard to see except in slow motion... but if you look at your slow motion video of your own swing, you will see that the right wrist moves from that palm up, slightly cupped position to a pinky finger more down at impact. Thanks for the great videos, you are great!

This is a great tip. I came upon it on my own after watching the golf swing of Tony Finau. I could not figure out how he was getting the distance he was, with his irons mainly, taking such an abbreviated back swing. What I saw after watching a ton of slow motion swing videos is how he does exactly what you mention in this tip. It's real easy to see in his swing because it is so pronounced. He lays off the club and in doing that he creates a sort of whipping action that seems to generate a lot of club head speed with minimal effort. I spent a lot of time practicing with it last summer in my yard and the distance improvement was pretty significant. It did feel pretty awkward though and I never felt confident enough to take it to the course. It's a big swing change so something that will take a lot of time to get down. I plan to spend a lot more time working on it this year and incorporating this motion into my swing. Great tip !!!
If you are curious about this tip I recommend checking out Tony's swing where you can really see it in action. Cheers !!

Great instruction. I'm working with my Father in law (age 70) on this exact area right now. He sways off the ball, swing plane and weight transfer is never consistent. I had him doing some of your drills yesterday, and he instantly started making better contact with the ball. You are an awesome instructor sir! It would be really cool to meet you someday, so if you are ever going to be in the Frisco Texas area, please give your viewers a heads up. Thanks again Danny!

Danny put your y drill into practice during a round last weekend, on every iron shot put the club in correct position religiously, what a difference, best ball striking round by a mile, much more consistent. Will try this drill tomorrow afternoon. Starting to see the benefits of sticking to the routine on the course. Play off 5 , but we play off 1/2 handicap in the winter , so 36 Stableford points from a 2 handicap works for me.

Its funny, cause i just found out the other day. My thoughts is this: from the top, drop down the right shoulder and turn the hands 90 degrees so that they are in line on the path to the ball.
I live in Sweden so it's off season. I've only made practise swings so far, but it feels amazing. I can now do all the things i've seen youtubers like you Danny talk about. Hips can turn, and i don't feel stiff. I get a better angle to the ball. Can't wait until the season starts.
Keep up the good work Danny!

Awesome stuff Danny. I too struggled with the take away and getting the club to the top steeper. A great drill for me was to tape an alignment rod to an old 7 iron and swing keeping the alignment rod in contact with the hips initially and then the thigh as you take the club back. Supper awkward but after about a month (500+ dry swings) I finally have it and it finally looks right in video. Amazing how hard it was to get this right but now it feels so natural that I don’t even have to think about it. You MUST use camera to verify because you simply cannot trust what you feel:)
