  • Driving home and my service traction control, stabilink and check engine light come on. Had a loss of power for about 20 minutes then a noise that sounded like something hitting my exhaust heat shield which got worse and sounded like a flex plate bolt came out and was rubbing. Figured i would try to get it home 5 miles away and 1 mile later she died and was locked up!! i was surprised on how quiet the noise was for the amount of damage

This sucks. it is more common they you would think. The valve spring failure I think is a issue with guide failure. On oem LS heads when I have seen the spring failure I have found more often then not guides way to tight from scoring or excessive valve temp. The exhaust guide should be about .0016 to .0018 when new. They can be up to .0025 but this would cause premature seat and guide wear. The other thing is sometimes the springs just break. Going forward be aware of the Chinese imitation Pac springs on the market. They can usually be found by the unreasonably low price. I have purchased a set on ebay advertised as genuine PAC but was shipped clearly a fake package and fake spring. You are usually safe going with name branded springs such as Comp cams Isky and PSI. I have never personally used BTR but i have heard good things about them. My personal preference is PSI Maxlife endurance springs. They are a little more money but i have never had a failure caused by the spring.

You say Texas Speed stage 3 truck cam, low lift version? (.550" lift) And yes, you should be able to reuse that windage tray.
Also, I've been told by many in the industry - the exhaust valves look like that from the ethanol in the fuel.

It was a .600 lift cam but if u go that route i wouldnt recommend their valve springs unless you replace them every year like they told me lol. Good to know thanks!

@@thedirtdigger5990 Damn, once a year is excessive. I had BTR duals on my LQ4 with a .600"+ lift EPS cam. The valve springs are still good. A worn lifter tray let a lifter turn sideways and killed the engine. I ran that set up for 6 years and nearly 40k miles. I'm going to repurpose the valve springs, I'm confident that they're fine.

@BlueCollar Hotrods the guy who re-did my manufactured heads said my btr springs were good and that the Texas speed springs were garbage and not the first time hes heard about them breaking. I had called Texas speed to ask why they broke and how can I prevent this from happening again which is when they said replace every year. I laughed and went to BTR for everything after that
