Hi Paul. Here’s my piano life story.
    Age 4 started lessons-hated it
Age 4-9 Had many teachers. Couldn’t sit still, had no interest reading music because I could pick up songs by ear
Age 9 Never had another lesson. Didn’t learn much from the teachers.
Age 12-15 Picked up a few tunes my friends liked like The Peanuts Theme, Music Box Dancer and busted my chops to learn the Maple Leaf Rag.
    Took 40 years off.
At age 55 I started renting half a studio space with an electric keyboard. Was playing around on it and decided to learn mov 3 to see how far I could get before I quit!
I’m about 3/4 of the way through learning it and am pretty proud of myself I must say. My fingering is atrocious but I’m getting it done albeit with mistakes here and there.
    There it is!

I heard this piece and immediately fell in love with it. when I asked my professor if I could play it he kinda laughed at me. so I decided to learn it on my own. I started learning it before the pandemic and now I can play it all (not in the actual speed, I'm working on increasing my speed). I wish I had seen this video before, it would have definitely helped me to not go through this alone, an awesome video!

Paul Barton is the Alton Brown of piano. Very insightful and intelligent about every piece. Plays every one amazingly, and with purpose. Not just randomly out of passion, like myself. Every tutorial is an episode of Good Eats, but for piano.

The first time I heard these three sonatas by Beethoven I was 12 years old, and my grandfather played these on his Steinway XR and since that time I've had the burning desire to learn how to play these all my life. Of course the third movement is the hardest to play but with your tutorial, I totally went and revisited this music again with more confidence! Thank You for your excellent well put together video! You totally cover all aspects! 😊

First class tutorial and outstanding playing. I did this piece for diploma some years ago, and it took me a few months to learn the third movement. I could have done with some of these practice tips at the time as my tutor really had little input beyond play slowly and accurately and then speed up. Having not played it for 15 years I am just working it up again to performance standard and found this video super helpful.

I started to play piano after I retired. While learning to play the first two movements I happened to be riding my bike listening to random music on Pandora and heard the third movement without knowing what it was. I thought to myself, that I could never play that and out of curiousity I stopped pedaling to see what it was that was playing. To my shock I found that it was the third movement on Moonlight Sonata. I mentioned this to a concert pianist and teacher who told me that perhaps I could learn to play it. My goal is now to play it at full speed before I die. I am struggling to do your exercises and hope that they will help me accomplish my goal! I wish I had started when I was a child.....

I learnt to play piano at music school from my 6 y.o till 14 y.o. Unfortunately the educational programme was awful and I stopped playing after I finished school.
When I turn my 30's I started to play piano again. Unfortunately I lost my technique 😢 Now I'm 39 and try to learn to play 3rd movement. It is very hard 😢
But I want to support you❤ I hope, you will make your dream come true! And I wish you to make a perfect performance of 3rd movement ❤

I've finally memorized all of section 1 and wanted to progress to the next section. It's such a huge piece to learn, but it just leads you to want to learn the next piece and then the next piece, regardless of it's difficulty! I will have to keep coming back to this video over the next few months for guidance, thank you again!

As always, a great tutorial! Paul, to answer the question you pose at the end, my interest in playing the piano (keyboard actually), was b/c at age 13 I wanted to play like Laurie Partridge on TV. Once I started lessons with a classic teacher, I heard an LP compilation of L. Pennario playing the 1st mvt. I told my father it sounded simple, and I will never forget (+40 years later) what he said: that with Beethoven, every note has ultimate meaning and it - and not another - is there for a reason. All 3 mvts have been a cherished friend for most of my life.

When i was 8 I was overwhelmed with the First movement of the sonata. I learnt how to play it althought wy hands werent stretched enough. Following years i stopped playing the piano but i have always wanted to play all three movements. It's like a dream. Now I'm 26 and i resumed my playing lessons and I can say for sure that is so difficult to make your fingers move faster. But the further you go the more chance to achieve what you want. So i've been practicing playing the 3rd movement for some months and Haven't finished learning it. I have some problems with the parts where you ned to switch hands and arpeggios are so difficult. But the most frustrating thing is that when i try to play quickly I miss the keys, although i know all the notes perfectly. II don't know maybe I'm tend to ovetrhink sometimes and should switch off my ming while playing. Anyway thank you Paul. There were some difficult parts where i got some struggles and your tutorial helped so much! Keep going! Hope in some time i will manage and the dream will come true!

@@raynev8369 I know the feeling trust me, but after a long time of very slowly increasing the tempo it helped a lot and got me through that very same plateau. You got this!

I would like some advice on studying. It is better to work in small sections or play the whole piece slowly with the metronome, increasing the metronome click every day. Thank you

Of course I am doing some drills but I don't know where they will get me. For example I do the first exercise of hannon but in a way that I bang the first and last fingers while pressing the middle fingers pianissimo..
I know you are a great artist and teacher, you will help with some objective drills and tips.

Thank you Paul! You were exactly right about how I started to learn playing piano because I fell in love with this Sonata during pandemic. I'm still working on 1st movement though.

I'm pretty sure there are people like me who can't play this piece at all no matter how much they practice.
I started playing 1 year ago and I'm doing very well with other pieces and songs but I can't even make the beginning of this one even in slow tempo, it doesn't seem possible.
