Episode Description:
Annie and Derek are joined this week by Lyndsay Jensen, the founder and editor of The International, an online magazine dedicated to helping foreigners living in Denmark find their way.
Lyndsay shares her story of moving to Denmark after growing up as a Brit living in South Africa. You could say she’s been an expat her whole life. After a decade of life in South Africa with her Danish husband, she expected a soft landing in Denmark. Instead she found herself in a sink or swim existence.
After facing the challenges of adjusting and settling into Denmark, she realized she was missing some vital resources to help her transition. That's when she decided to become the resource she was looking for and launched The International.
Laugh along as Lyndsay, Annie, and Derek revisit the familiar challenges and mistakes for foreigners moving to Denmark. Learn where you can get help for your own journey through Danish culture and life in Denmark.
And don’t forget to share this podcast with any friends who have made the move to Denmark.

Cold drinks in Denmark aren't more expensive, it's usually more the case that you're paying for convenience. A lot grocery stores have a section for cold drinks inside the store and right outside. Inside the store it's usually normal price, but the cold drinks outide, usually connected to a kiosk, are usually way more expensive. They often frame this by having the drinks being slightly different in size, 0.57L instead of 0.5L, but the price is 25DKK instead of 15DKK.
In a similar vein, a 0.5L bottle of coke might be 20DKK but a 1.5L large bottle of coke might be 15DKK, due to convenience.
My ex is Cantonese. We chose from the very beginning that we'd follow the 1-parent-1-languge... it worked very well with our first kid, my daughter is basically fluent in Danish, English and Cantonese. To me that matters because I think it's important that kids can talk to their grandparents (being of partly German decent myself).
But my ex hasn't been the same strict regarding the smaller brother... so he kinda prefers English... he's figured out that the kindergarten staff, and his mother, still understands if he use English.
I still insist on speaking Danish... but im not sure if he will become fluent in Cantonese... I only know a few clue words... I can't teach him...
Anyway, about private and international schools... it's really a mixed bag.
Some are great but also some are struggling to survive.
The public schools here have free access to animal parks and cultural events, that's something that costs a little money to private institutions. So often the private kindergarten becomes "somewhere you can park your kid"... while the public go nuts exploring nature and arts.
Deepest darkest Jutland... okay that description fits quite well (someone growing up close to Silkeborg).
It's not always dark though... in the bright summer months I'm pretty sure we had more freedom as kids than Copenhageners dared to give their own children.
generally speaking all things being equal the same drink being cold will not cost more however usually the drinks in the fridge area cost more than the ones not chilled. Because usually it will be a different size or type that they put in the chilled area in comparison to what's on the floor.
what is that cute little dogs name.. have to ask ;o)
every body have a sagbehandler here in Denmar even if you dont need it

Hi, Aim to free yourselves from your manuscripts. Best, Maria
Manuscripts?
@maria
They *don't* really use the scripts, which is what I like...not sure what you are talking about...?
Absolutely
likely turned off by the obvious reading off of the laptop in the beginning

The culture that has built Denmark into the country it is today and that you enjoy the benefits of, is being wiped out by your multiculturalism.
You’re not the spokesperson for Danish culture or representing it in the least. Take the Dannebrog off of your profile because you’re not worthy of it ✌️

Wonder what the current queen thinks...
@@RobeTrotting I don't have to be, our strict immigration legislation expresses the Danes' attitude to multiculturalism in Denmark.
@@Alhem11 attitude and what did something are not correlated. If we look at most of Denmark's major economic growth it happened with a more progressive government and when Denmark opened up to other places more. Modern wealthy Denmark was made by embracing more multiculturalism a mixed economy that uses many aspects of the market economy but is controlled by left-wing ideals
