RED CODE at NAZARÉ: Nazaré Biggest Swells
Вставка

- If we talk about giant and perfect swells at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, it's impossible not to mention this day. It was undoubtedly one of the biggest and most perfect days in the history of big wave surfing. That's why I like to call it a Red Code day in Nazaré, comparable to the legendary Red Code days in Tahiti, when the ocean reveals its full potential at a big wave break.
My first memory of that day is being at Porto do Abrigo, where the surfers prepared to head out to the lighthouse with their jet skis. The nervousness was palpable... you could cut the air with a knife. Nervousness, anxiety, stress, adrenaline, concentration... all these emotions filled the air in the sheds where the surfers were putting on their gear to tackle the world's biggest waves.
Great personalities had flocked to Portugal to ride this swell, and everyone was there, exchanging ideas about which boards to use, which fins, and whether the jet skis were ready. They were making sure all the communication equipment was set up and that everyone knew their roles perfectly.
Then, it was time to head out. I had a radio and could hear the surfers' adrenaline-fueled shouts as they approached the break. Even as they left the port, they couldn't believe the size of the waves.
Once there, the conditions were ideal. It wasn't just an extremely large swell but also perfectly aligned, coming from the right direction, with the wind helping the waves form perfectly. All the surfers had to do was stay aligned and connected with the sea to make the right decisions and catch the best wave in the series.
For me, records were undoubtedly broken that day. The first wave was by Lucas Chumbo, breaking behind peak 0, what many call Big Mama. I remember seeing them go after the wave that was forming back there. Lucas was positioned in the perfect spot to drop down the wave, making a vertical and deep line. The wave began to draw those white water trails that make it look even bigger and more vertical. At the base of the wave, the water was churned up, full of air due to the previous wave that had broken, making this area a giant hazard as the fins of the board don't grip securely. Another danger, imperceptible to those who weren't there, is that this wave breaks over the lighthouse, a bit to the left, carrying you towards the cliffs below. A fall could mean being dragged towards the giant rocks without stopping. If we take the second wave in the video as a reference, this first one broke even further to the left. That's why, even though the conditions were perfect, the dangers remained gigantic or even greater.
What follows in the video is a compilation of waves from different moments of a day of extremely giant waves. If we were to call a Red Code day in Nazaré, the conditions would be like those you can see in this video. I think it would be 100% comparable to a Red Code day in Tahiti. However, we could also say that Nazaré, being Nazaré, is in a constant state of Red Code.
Enjoy this epic day of surfing and witness the incredible power of Nazaré's waves!

This is the kind of wave that appears in apocalyptic movie posters, lurching over the city skyline.
It is.. that wave you see there has the same size as an 8 story building!
Yeah! And now guys are riding it! 😂
Aloha, fantastic video - love hearing the roar of the waves. How many feet are they?
Lol if kai Lenny and Kelly Slater played a role in a movie surfing one of these size wave... Kind of wild that they are doing stuff like this in real life. Mondo ups to the ppl who can ride that.
Holy shark..these surfers have hearts of stone.
And the last wave you can tell the jet ski is the only way they are attempting these so willfully as the white water gobbles that dude up.
Have to see, hear and feel these waves break before i go!!
On the Bucket list!!!

Bodysurfing the WEDGE @ NEWPORT still RULES
Very skilled surfers and waveriders on jetskiis. Only young surfers who feel invincible would challenge themselves in this way. As a retired surfer, I respect their abilities but cringe at their daredevil attitudes. Nazare surf should not be aspirational for others, rather a warning to never take such risks simply because the spectacle of it all shows it can be done. At this level, surfing is a death wish.
Should not be aspirational. TRUE
Not really!!
How many surfers have died at Nazare?
@@larryslemp9698 Freire died, and many others have come close, or were critically injured. Navarre's psycho wedge monster waves have not been surfed for long, and mostly by the elite of surfing. Notably, the jet ski force has offered a major safety factor. Without these guys, the death rate would likely force the Portuguese to close the beach at some wave height. All I am suggesting is that the goal of surfing should not be reckless record-breaking heights. It misleads those into thinking daring is more important than athleticism.
Agree 100%
At about 2:16 the sound of the wave crashing sounds like a thunder clap.
imagine live!!!
I've been down in the soup of the washing machine out of wind and breath looking up at sky thinking this isn't good this is scary shit good on anyone in the water gonzo
"OK, guys, remember the real name of this sport ?" "The... real name, sir ?" "Yes." "Oh, you mean : try not to die ?" 😅😅😂😁😉
Looks like the shore break where I come from.
where's that Andrew?
Thank goodness for the inflatable vest. Waves are getting bigger over time.
haha true!! that thing is saving lifes!!
In my dreams..
dreams or nightmares julia??
Mister Mother Nature !
The one and only!
It is an insane drop but quickly burgers out. Mavs or Jaws are way more critical.
Some waves are more critical, True! But the lineup here is way more crazy! Is not a point break so waves are coming from everywhere, falling and staying in the inside is a life death situation. No safe channel! 😱
Damn I get scared on 6-ft waves I'm going to have nightmares tonight but still paddle out in the morning😂
nothing better than surfing after a good nightmare.. one surfing a day keeps the psychologist away hahah
How deep is the water & how fast are these guys going down the wave face🤔
Not sure exact numbers but is deep. Never heard about somebody hiting the bottom.. The surfers yes they talk about sometimes going so deep that feeling a heavy preasure..
Speed.. more than 70km/h

Honestly these waves are too big. It is far more interesting to watch surfers on Jaws and Chopes when they are maxed out.
Had you seen some wipeouts here? men is NEXT LEVEL!
Yesssss
old video?
New video! Highlight waves from different swells 🫡
Nope
Probably one of the most boring surfing anyone can watch and I would think most people watching this is doing so to see deadly wipe outs
I can assure you that watching that live has nothing of boring! Is one of the craziest things u can see! Please pass by one day. I invite you a beer!
Not boring at all. Each to their own. 🤷♀️
This is so f'ing boring, watching exactly the same 30-second drop over and over again. Do any of these guys know how to surf?
Dear Tomi: saying the drop is the same over and over again only reveals who has never surf in his life.. If u want to know if they know how to surf i recommend you to get a board and try to surf a 1ft wave for more than 2 seconds.. i think that will answer lot of your questions :) Cheers mate!
@@barenafilmsport I suggest you grow up
Getting towed in with a JetSki is the same thing is getting to the top of Mount Everest with the help of a helicopter. this is a really dumb kind of surfing. Using gasoline to catch a wave.
Mmm I don’t think the same… the biggest risk about surfing this waves is surfing down the line.. trying not to get catch.. there is LOT of risk, your life is is risk.
On the other hand it’s imposible to surf this waves paddling. To go down the line the board has to be heavy, if not the waves are so big that they push you up and also have to be small to be easy to turn and follow the good line, one of the biggest risks is making a line to straight and loosing speed.
You're going to paddle up against those monsters? Good luck...
@@markdahanswer then don't do it. Are you going to build a house in the Saharan desert simply because you have air conditioning?
@@boblatkey7160To each his own brother. Their lives, their choices.
