i live in the Bay Area, first time i went to Mavericks was Nov 21 2001 later called 100 foot wednesday, i called in sick, and rode my GL1000 to the coast, climbed up the cliff side and perched with binoculars...
My mom (R.I.P.) was from Oklahoma. I was born in Santa Cruz, so I surfed. Ended up at Mav's in the 90s (not to detract from the amazing things they pull off now, but with no skis and no flotation. Without help). She always said I would've been a bullrider if they stayed in Oklahoma. Respect to all who push it. And motocross is crazy. I pulled off jumping a Volkswagen and that was enough for me. Taco'ed the forks trying to jump 2. You know how your brain disconnects when you're in a situation you don't know if you're gonna make it? I was rolling around underwater being hit by these giant balls of force on my first big wipeout at Mavericks. Just spin cycle, being rag-dolled. My brain was having this calm conversation with myself: "Oh my God! I can't believe a wave can hit me this hard! What does this remind me of? A wave drill in football? No. Oh, I know! It's just like being blindsided on my motorcycle by a car running a stop sign at 30mph!!" If you've been blindsided by a car driving good traffic speed on your bike, that's what it's like being hit by those waves, but not pointy metal ripping into you. But imagine it keeps happening for 10, 15 seconds or more. You're a motorcycle guy. You probably get what I'm saying. Sorry old guy rant. Can't surf anymore cause of injuries. Can barely walk with my cane anymore.
its hard to compare it to anything else one thing for sure all three must be able to face fears and be tough.surfing can test body limits one guy might be fine another get a ruptured ear drum or dislocated limb from same situation.the tow surfers shortcut much of the work and toughening up that paddle surfers would have to endure to get to the level of riding massive waves. the lifeguards used to tell us they did not like us jumping off the pier to get out on big days because if we were not ready and tried to get out from beach we would not make it out past the surf line and the danger would be self limiting.surfing can mess you up when your paddling out and ducking waves impact from lip if you cannot get deep enough can be violent. you can be dragged back underwater feels like your in violent river rapids for a long time and go 1-200 yards.when riding the lip can hit you and chip shot you up into the air.if you get in the turbulence its very violent and can rip vests off your body while trying to drown you and this can happen until the sets end or you are dragged far enough inside the lineup . none of this involves getting impacted into anything which can also happen in shallow breaks
@@XxmattitudexX Remember you can't duck-dive a real gun, also. I used to duck-dive an 8' 6" Steve Coletta board, I made up a method of first paddling fast, grab the rails, and kind of belly-bunnyhop to get extra punch under. But no way anyone is duck diving whitewash on a 9' 6" or a 10' 4" like I used to ride. Punch under, blast paddle over, if the whitewash is like 6 ft. or less and you're right in front of a cliff or rocks, but that's an enormous expenditure of energy, like life threatening situations only. (In front of the jump rock at giant Swift St. on the Dec. 2000 swell, for instance. Fight for your life.)
I agree there could be better ways of towing in than gas powered jet skis… but the wave is subtle and relatively flat, then becomes too fast to paddle into consistently
One of the best Mavericks films I've ever seen! It's perfect conditions!
Same day Santa Cruz wharf broke 50-mi down the coast, right?
Power and grace, surfers and waves, perfect union. Splendid soundtrack, inspired. Thanks.🌊🌊🌊🏄🏄♂🏄♀👏👏👏

Fabulous only thing better would be their names. Thank you for the fantastic footage
Thanks for watching!
Great montage. Thank you
Thanks!!
So gnarly! Great footage. 🤘
Thanks!!
great video, heavy shots. Mother Nature is beautiful. thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome shots! 😮
Thanks!!
Thanks. Was looking forward to the footage.
Thanks for watching!
Any info on the tunes? Great stuff. Of course, thinking The Mermen, but not sure if this is them. Thx.
I prefer the beach view or water level video of big waves, drones makes the waves look much smaller.
I agree. Unfortunately you couldn’t see anything from land due to dense fog
@dgfilms264 Didn't know that, thanks for letting me know.
I dunno hard to make those look small
@@DavidDudley-yy2ui It is not that they look small, it is they look much smaller than they really really are.
You seem like an expert at trying to make tiny things look bigger. Go home, Valley. Valley go home!
The Pacific Ocean is gorgeous! ❤ seeing all the surfers having a good time.
🙌🏼🙌🏼
That's amazing!!
Thank you!
Tow and rescue👍

Me too. Came from farther South, but couldn't leave once I saw it. 🖖
Nice!!
good footage...
Thanks!
I've been wrong. Mavericks can be if not tamed, cooperated with. And it's a beautiful thing.Ty. ❤️🏄
🙏🏼🤙🏼
Was just headed over there now. Is it too foggy to see the waves from the bluffs?
Yes the fog is still very dense and no visibility from the bluff
That was pristine conditions man
Looks like surfing nirvana. Beautiful sets.
Thank you!!
Looks heavier than Waimea to me. That section that stands up makes it more interesting as well.
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Are they towing them in?? I thought it was a paddle in wave
Im a motocross guy just clicked on this . These surfers are just as crazy as pro Motocross and pro bull riders.
🙌🏼🙌🏼 thanks for watching!

What are these 30' to 40'? What does your speed get up to when riding one of those?
Size was probably about 30-35ft. Their speed probably around 30mph I’d guess 🤙🏼

So pleased these surfers get to ride, or try to ride, these big ones. Most have dreamed of waves like this. Enjoy, you all are awesome 🎉🌊🌊🌊🎄🎉

Nice footage 👏 Few guys at the end shouldn’t be there lol
Thanks 🤙🏼
I wonder what Cortes Bank was doing throughout this massive swell?
I’m not sure i don’t think anyone sent it on a mission out there 🤙🏼
Who's on the foil? That's crazy at Mavericks!
Gnarly day. Thanks for the video. 🤙
Thanks for watching!
Awesome, don't want that wave on your head

Bravo
Thanks!
looks like tow in...legal at Mavericks?

MASSIVE!
M-m-massive you say?

Is that Kai lenny?
Nope Kai was at Waimea this day 🤙🏼
@dgfilms264 Kai left right after his heat on that day.
One after another
🙌🏼🙌🏼
I am shocked people aren’t paddling that.
No one was really able to paddle into these
Great footage. No need for a foil.
Thanks!
Doesn’t anyone paddle anymore 🤔
Too big and fast to paddle
A bit much tide today but fun anyway.
Paddle in
If people could paddle in they would have been paddling
Foiling Maverick’s = I want to bleed out for a shit wave to get male peer approval 😂
as good as it gets...

This, Jaws, and others are what big wave surfing is all about, not Waimea and the Eddie...

Foils are an abomination
lol he was charging tho
Let's see you ride one 😅
@@MikeHunt90731 I would never ride a foil, it looks stupid
At 20 feet+ I think Jaws is a better wave.
Two better waves in ireland
Two completely different waves with totally different vibes 🤙🏼
I think you’re wrong but we are all entitled to our own opinions. I will say jaws does have a better barrel but they are both perfect big waves
Too bad the Eddie was on same time.
Was even bigger today at mavericks!
@@dgfilms264 Saw one pic from a friend......freaked me out....bigger than Cortez?
Too bad alright- for the Hawaiians. This looks next level to Waimea.
That foil riding really sucked. That thing was so slow. Lame
Why so many jet skis? Ruins the natural vibe of surfing.
Because it was too big for anyone to paddle
Yeh let’s take all the skis out so 10 blokes can drown. At least the natural vibe will be there.

30+ft waves and you want a natural vibe?
