Superman Has A Pocket In His Cape?!?

- Superman has gone through many changes throughout his history at DC comics. However, his costume tends to remain fairly consistent. However, it apparently at one time (and potentially still does) had a pocket. Just where is it? Why was it implemented? What does it have to do with Superboy? Join Casually Comics on a tangent inspired by your comments! Finally answer the question are you pro or anti pocket for the Man Of Steel?

I want the pocket to be the antithesis to Batman's Utility Belt. Instead of every mcguffin under the sun. Only pretzels
Lol yes
And loose grains of salt. He could debilitate a foe with pocket salt to the eyes!
And some dirty old penny's for good measure. Pretty much whatever u can find underneath couch cushions

A small dictionary for Ms. Lane
It annoys me to no end that Supes is blessed with a cap pocket and I'm sitting here in the real world with my fake pockets.
I will forever be sad when I buy something and it shows up and it turns out the pockets are fake. The betrayal! lol
Let me assure you, pockets are the LEAST of the betrayals the fashion industry commits daily to women’s attire. It’s a list. Pockets simply compound the crime. Sure, you shot people while robbing the bank, but your getaway car was DOUBLE PARKED!!!!
Ok, I’ll calm dow before I feel an “aaaand another thing …!”, coming on.
The Question has the most practical outfit. It's a trench coat, a mask and a fedora. You can keep many snacks in a trench coat, it obscures your identity, and holds up well in the rain.
Yup, no question, The Question.
@@anamount701 Marvel & DC should find some way to have the Question encounter Spidey's villain the Answer.
@@johnpjones182 the ultimate enemies to lovers story
Some other superheroes have a trench coat, such as the "Golden Age" Sandman, before he changed uniforms when his sidekick, Sandy, came along. Also, The Phantom Stranger either wore a trench coat, or had a cape. i am not sure. The same goes for the first uniform for the "Golden Age" Crimson Avenger.
@@crackofdawn805 The ship I didnt know I needed.
So it's safe to assume that Clark has multiple pockets for various things, one for his clothes, one for snacks, and perhaps a miscellaneous pocket.
My guess is he has only one pocket and it's a mess inside.
Don't forget, the one pocket EVERYONE has, his prison pocket!
You can't beef about Superman having a pocket in his cape, when Batman's human ass walks around with a utility belt with EVERYTHING he could possibly need, including a bat credit card.
“A BAT CREDIT CARD?”
@@crackofdawn805 "Never leave the cave without it."
Now I'm imagining a world where this level of "fit an entire suit into a pocket" exists, and Lois has one where she keeps an emergency wedding dress.
If these pockets are also physics-defying, you gotta know that, in addition to a pretzel, Supes keeps a glass of chilled water in there just in case he meets Jimmy stranded in the desert so he can not give it to him.
The alternative is Superman rummaging around down the front of his briefs where he keeps his snacks.
Now you understand why Batman has a utility belt to keep his Bat-Mints in.
For the longest time I thought that's what he did was store everything he needs in his outer underwear. Till I heard of the Cape pocket.
Side note:I'm surprised Batman didn't make a fortune on the utility belt design on super suits.
I think I heard once in an Evannova video that Superman does have a hidden utility belt, but it's much less equipped than Batman's or Spider-man's.
His briefs are where he keeps Lois's snack.
The suit was made by unraveling his baby blankets, Clark using his heat vision to cut the thread. His boots were made from the seat of his rocket ship. His glasses used lenses made from rounded shards of the rocket's window so he could use his heat vision without melting the lenses. His belt also came from the safety harness in his rocket. This was all explained in a Superboy story but I have no idea which one. Definitely pro-pocket. I'd like to see Kryptonian cargo shorts.
I misread the end of your comment as, "... Krypto in cargo shorts." 🐶
So he is a super tailor too
I’ll accept all of this except for the boots. He wears those under his work shoes somehow, they’ve gotta be socks.
@@Kierste_n his Clark Kent shoes are just covers over his boots, like spats except covering the soles as well. That’s how his ‘shoes’ fit in the cape pocket, they aren’t complete shoes at all.
The boots were made from the upholstery that lined baby Kal-El's chamber inside the rocket. Young Clark stitched them together using a metal sliver from the rocket as a sewing needle. The material was probably thin enough to wear under regular shoes and socks.
Casually Comics, with Cruella DeVille... Talking about pockets, so fashion... IT ALL MAKES SENSE!
(Most impractical costume, just about every female costume, especially the 90's. I'm made my mission to learn these things for a project)
A pocket project, perhaps?
well I mean there is martian manhunter. All he's got is boots, underwear, a cape and a thin x across his body.
@@ProjektTaku Yet, it's not even clothing, he shapeshift it's on, just like Mystique, they're just naked lol
@@GenerationWest my god. The comics where he and mystique appear in should be rated R for nudity. But also does that mean that they can split pars of themselves of from them?Could they clone themselves or create copies?
How can you say those outfits were impractical? Many of them had tiny ankle bandoliers. They could hold two whole dimes! Two of them!
I love Cape Pocket. It makes Supes more human. The fact he brings snacks with him in it is perfect. It makes sense he would. I mean, chances are, if he saved a girl right before then, he'd give HER the pretzel to make her feel better. Especially if she has the "L. L." initials.
I like what another commenter said that Superman just has a cape pocket filled with juice boxes for kids he saves on adventures and occasionally for himself
If you go back to the first meeting between Superman and Batman, Batman tells Surerman "Nice cape." Superman replies "It has pockets!'
My headcannon is that the pocket functions like the doctors pockets - bigger in the inside maybe via some kind of phantom zone tech, and that Clark keeps juices boxes in there for when he's like rescuing kids from burning buildings and theyre thirsty feom the smoke, but also just for himself🤣
Maybe the pockets are portals to a Phantom Zone-like dimension, that we could call "the Snack Dimension".
Basically a bag of holding. A pocket of holding, even.
The idea of superman giving kids juice boxes is so silly but just as in line with who superman is that it's perfect
"Yo Zod, may I get a snack please"
@@sandwichqueen Imagine if Zod and the guys escape through the pocket! And the Pocket City of Kandor! The cape pocket story potential is nearly limitless.
Imagine a scene where superman acts like a woman who just got a new dress "Look it has pockets 🙂 " 😂😂
That's PERFECTLY in-character for Clark. Wholesome Farm Boy would DEFINITELY get all excited over his costume getting pockets.
AAAWWW YEEES THATS CLARK
Well, his mother made the suit for him in most incarnations, I wouldn't be surprised if she puts a pocket in it somewhere.
Can't stop imagining an invulnerable lint monster spawning from the super secret super pocket. It could have been a force for good but all those pretzels left it salty.
"who wants a krabby patty at 3 am?!"
Supes, snuggling in his cape...
In one story, Supergirl says Superman's civilian clothes are super-compressible but the chemicals that create this also make his clothes either red, white or blue, hence explaining why Clark always wears the same red, white and blue ensemble.
There's also a story where Superman hides a miniaturized Professor Ivo in his cape pocket.
Are the chemicals that made his clothes super-compressible the same ones that the Flash used to keep his costume in a ring?
(And come to think of it, where did the Flash keep his clothes when he was Flash-ing? Did they go in the ring?)
@@dlee827 hehe, flashing
Along with making the clothes super-compressible, the chemicals protect his clothes from air friction when he's moving at super-speed in his civvies.
Even by Sascha's high standards that intro is *chef's kiss*
Fun fact, in the 1943 Batman film serial Batman had a pocket in his cape. In one episode after saving a friend of his from some gangsters, Batman and Robin exit the building via the fire escape. While climbing down all of Batman's cigarettes fall out of his cape pocket.
I love the cape pocket because of how silly it is but imagining that slick New52 outfit trying to be rough and rugged but then Superman reaches down into his suit pocket just LMAO
I always really liked Blue Beetles (Ted’s) costume practicality wise. They don’t draw it all the time but he usually has a big pouch on his belt, both as a holster and a practical use for gear and stuff. His earlier comics also used to go into detail about how his mask couldn’t come off without his specific fingertips because his gloves had like a magnetic key pass to unlock his mask.
Details like this just added and made sense to someone who was supposed to be a really smart engineer and I appreciated the thought that went into it.
Superman doesn’t hide his trick underneath his sleeve now, it’s in his cape.
Yes. The Flash ring compartment was always, "Yea. OK. Sure. If you say so."
But Superman's cape pocket was always an eye-roll.
The Flash ring is the only part of the new 52 redesing that makes it worth it. The metalic? parts of his costume coming out the ring and froming his suit somehow makes more sense that the suit being compresed in the ring. At the very least it looked least silly. Alternately, there the "pure Speed Force Energy" suit a flash used to make back in the day, witch is so spectaculary bizarre that it makes the ring thing look normal.
Superman: *stomach churn* Guess it's pretzel o'clock. (fumbles around with cape) where's the pocket...wait, this cape seems to be made out of...plastic?
Plastic Man: Okay, okay. I'm the cape! Just don't tell anyone, I'm trying to hide from Wonder Woman, I owe her twenty bucks.

I like when the storeroom in the daily planet was brought up right after clark revealed his secret identity. I think it was Jimmy who was like "oh my god THAT'S where these clothes keep coming from"
Jimmy, "Superman, is that a pistol in your pocket or are you glad to see Lois?"
This video perfectly encapsulates what I love about comics and comic fans lmao so much complex dialogue around a simple pocket
This entire thing is hilarious, even the idea of Superman walking around with not only a cape pocket but snacks and condiments

These glasses don't improve my vision. Maybe they keep my eyes from tiring, so I'll wear them.
I can run so fast, across the state in seconds! I'm probably a track-and-field star, that'll help pinpoint my identity.
I dented this solid steel by barely touching it! I must work out a lot, whoever I am.
I can hear two people having a conversation all the way from Scotland. I probably practice good hygiene, cleaning out my ears frequently.
Gadzooks! I stared at that sign, and beams shot from my eyes and set it ablaze! --must be allergies.
Yes actually the glasses are also Kryptonian in nature.
I’m not sure where it originated from but Superman Secret Origins by Geoff Johns had the glasses made out Kryptonian lens or crystals because Clark’s heat vision was kicking in specifically from kissing Lana Lang so the glasses stated out not as disguise but because it would let him make out with Lana without melting her face.
I think it came up in an issue with Spellbinder (I don't remember the specific issue, just that Superman uses a gigantic TV and his belt to hypnotize Metropolis to withstand all other forms of hypnotism). Apparently the Kryptonian lenses have some sort of hypnotic effect, thus explaining why no one has ever made the connection between silver age Superman and Clark Kent.

Gotta love that deep Superman lore of the tiniest thing being explained.
It's actually older than that. I'm not sure if it was golden or silver age, want to say golden... Anyway, back then an issue addressed it and the explanation was that the lens in his glasses were Kryptonian glass. They came from view window on Clark's spaceship which, during the crash broke into many pieces, two of which being perfect circles.
I'm an old fart. I've read - nay, "collected" - Superman since the 70s, and as a result, have collected back issues to the 50s and 60s. My headcanon is filled with Silver Age lore, and occasionally updated with now canon that I find compelling (Lois, for example, loving freshly squeezed OJ and struggling with a nicotine addiction). As such, the cape pocket was always assumed, as far as I was concerned. It became absolute MUST canon when I started cosplaying. Ask anyone in the cosplay community and they will tell you the importance of pockets. My wife has created hidden pockets in the bustles of all her Victorian dresses. All our capes have pockets (or hide fanny packs on the back of our belts.
If I were to ever cosplay Superman in a more traditional suit I’ll make the trunks big enough to have pockets. Hopefully it would look good or at least decent.
Now, you need to add a special pocket for a pretzel.
Feel free to tug on Superman's cape because in addition to having pockets it's infinitely elastic and can stretch around whatever the particular story needs it to stretch around .
Superman: I have a pocket in my cape.
James T. Kirk: I hate you.
All that’s so cool. Just the coolest thing. I want cape pockets. And just a cape in general
I have a vague memory of reading the novelization of the Superman movie where they explain that Supes would compress his civies into wafer thin and put them in a tiny pocket somewhere, possibly his cape. Its been way too many years since I read that surprisingly good novelization.
can you do a video on krypto? do you have one already? what's his deal? does his cape have a pocket? Does Kal-El have a super secret extra pocket containing kryptonian dog treats? can kryptonian dogs eat chocolate? I need answers
He can eat earth chocolate, but kryptonian chocolate is like kryptonite for him.

Either in an old Superboy issue or an animated story, Krypto's collar had a secret compartment that hid his cape. Somehow, he was able to pop it out to wear, and later get it back inside.
I'm absolutely okay with the cape pocket. I actually love it. It's so mundane but it's also so absurd at the same time I actually love this pocket.
I imagine it being like a vacuum bag, which would explain why the cape isn't as flowy as and having a mind of its own like regular fabric.
Sasha, if I may ask, do you like the Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon games? And do you like Digimon? And in that case, which ones?
I'm pro-pocket because it's useful, and it adds options for gags. It literally detracts nothing.
Heck yeah pockets are the best. Also I remember reading a Swedish translation of that "how Superman costume " bit in a annual at my grandparents house, good stuff. And the mostly practical super costumes got to be the ones from anything Sentai, you just "morph" into them with a cool poses then they go away when you don't need it. Or if you get your ass kicked but hey ho.
Better than "super compressed ball hidden in his body" from that Batman Superman crossover.
I'm Pro pockets. Everyone needs pocket. Wonder if Diana has them.
“Up, Up, and Away” is one of my favorite Superman stories.
Lois: I like your cape!
Clark: Thanks, it has pocket.

Fanny pack, invisible fanny pack.
That name isn't internationally friendly, it'd either be an invisible bum bag, or an invisible belly bag.
This is Grant Morrisons thoughts on continuity:
1. Any run before my book is out of continuity
2. Every run before my book is in continuity
3. If somethings out of continuity, I'll make it in continuity
4. If I mess up continuity I don't care unless its about sexual assault
Because of these 4 thought processes I too am surprised that it was never mentioned by Morrison. I'm not surprised about Geoff John using it. That guy loves Silver Age concepts.
And according to Action Comics 500 (1979), young Clark used his heat vision to unravel the Kryptonian blankets, and then Ma Kent could knit new clothing out of them.
The Adventure of Superman and Lois and Clark both have adaptions of the asteroid amnesia story.
It was also used in the “Adventures of Superman” radio show and TV show if I’m not mistaken.
Smallville has an episode where Chloe (who knows Clark is the Red-Blue Blur, but hasn't revealed that to Clark yet) has to babysit an amnesiac Clark and persuade him to keep his powers hidden until he finds out why his normal self did so.

Love the hair in this episode! What happens to the things in Doll Man's pockets when he shrinks? Where do heroes keep their keys?!
It was a fun thing which I thought didn’t extend into Post Crisis. I remember reading those stories in the past, but being younger I didn’t really think too much into it.
Skin tight costumes aren’t really practical field wear. Batman got away with it because of his belt, but real world physics wouldn’t allow much of his gear that size to really work.
I liked Animal Man’s compromise by wearing a jacket that gave pockets for storing some stuff
I suppose you could hide a small backpack under the cape. It wouldn’t interfere with it flapping during flight, and avoids all the weird questions about weight and shapes of clothes, wallet, shoes, glasses, mints that should cause a bulge and sag.
I barely remember reading that part where Superman hid his clothes in his mouth. Nice find!

"Thanks! It's got a pocket! "
I love the concept of the cape pocket where he keeps snakes. I think its good for superman to have some silliness.
Firmly pro-pocket, I feel like it was widely known in the 80s that Superman kept his clothes in his cape pocket, just like Flash's costume came out of his ring.
I think it was in The Death and Life of Superman novel by Roger Stern where he says his mother sewed a pocket in there to keep his clothes. That’s where I remember it from.
I’m very pro-cape pocket; it’s very much in tune with the SUPERMAN WEARS ACTUAL CLOTHING INSTEAD OF SOME KIND OF ARMOR-esthetic, which just makes more sense to me and, in turn, helps to maintain the RIPPING OPEN HIS SHIRT TO REVEAL HIS COSTUME UNDERNEATH-trope of the character...
Oh man, I had that second amnesia story as a kid, in a small black and white paperback reprint of classic Superman stories. The yacht, the costume party, the mixed kryptonite so everyone thought Superman was dead and Clark thought he was a replacement, getting his memory back after being electrocuted. I remember it all...
Gives pocket universe a whole new meaning.
Shortly after Tower of Babel story in JLA. Superman visited Batman in the Cave. At one point, Batman held up Clark’s glasses. Superman was surprised asking how he got the glasses. Batman said he needed to pay more attention to his cape pocket. So others may know about the pocket(s). What he stores in there.
The post-Crisis cape was just regular earthly fabric, like his costume. Whereas his protective aura kept the costume damage free (mostly) since it was skin right, the cape was routinely destroyed.
But, since Ma Kent made them, she made sure to make extras. Superman stored them in easily accessible locations, including at least one at Emil Hamilton's lab.
So post-Crisis, it's an easy answer, done capes had pockets sewn in, some didn't. I wonder if the capes he wore when he wasn't expecting trouble had the pocket, while the ones he wore heading into danger didn't.
I'm sure there were times Superman was like, "Great, a ribbon cutting for a new barbershop, I can wear the cape with a pocket," only to have Professor Killgrave decide to test a new weapon out on Superman.
There was a story in the sixties where Superboy and the Legion were on a mission and Insect Queen lost her ring. She would be stuck as a moth. But Light Lass caused the ring to float up, where it was stuck in Superboy's cape pocket.
Silverage Superman has only one supersuit, so he dry-cleans it by flying through the sun. Mustn't forget to empty his pocket first. It's a dry heat.
I was one year old when the cape pocket first appeared. The cape pocket has fused my eternal bond with Superman.
In an early Byrne issue he was also shown to have a hollow belt buckle where he kept spare cash.
Prior to these videos, the first (and only) time I learned about the cape pocket was in a Superboy story where he and Lana Lang (as Insect Queen) visited the Legion of Superheroes in the future. While in an insect form, Lana realizes that she lost the ring that gave her insect transforming powers. After everyone starts worrying that she'll be stuck in that form, Superboy discovers that the ring fell into his cape pocket (🙄), and she's able to transform back.
That is the most Silver Age thing that ever Silver Aged.
The Flash has a ring he can keep his suit in, so I am fine with a cap pocket. Does Supergirl have cap pocket or does she store it in her bra?
She has a cape pocket, too. As well as the same compression tech.
I mean, unlike Superman whos costume is super-tight, she has a skirt. So couldnt she have pockets there? Granted, that isnt nearly as magical as the cape pocket, but if it works it works.
Don't you remember that panel where Superman tries to bring the Phantom Zone villains to the police precinct, but they say pocket universes are out of their jurisdiction (Superman Vol. II #22, 1988)?
I'm cackling that there's a whole video follow up to this amazing joke 😂😂
I imagine the pocket would create weird drag that would pull the cape to one side or cause it to flap out of control. Or once the wind caught it at the speeds that he flies all the stuff inside would fly out and the pocket itself might be ripped right off the cape. Maybe it has a super zipper or something.
And everyone used to make fun of those multiple 90's pouches so many characters had! Bet you could fit a few mints in those!
I guess this is a Casually Comics… pocket episode …?
I'll let myself out.
I love how thorough you are on these tangent topics! As for cape pockets - yes, please! I mean, Superman has gotta have a place to carry stuff, just like the rest of us :)

No way anything earthly would survive that kind of abuse. LOL

Cool: the first appearance seems to be in the story that inspired/was inspired by (depending on which came first) the 50s Superman TV show episode Panic in the Sky, which inspired an episode of the same name on Lois & Clark, and the name was used again for a multi-part story in the 90s Superman books in which Brainiac takes over Warworld, and then because of that story the writers of Justice League Unlimited used the title for an episode as a clue that Brainiac was the secret villain of that story.
I like Kotetsu’s “my regular clothes, plus a domino mask” costume from Tiger & Bunny.

We can all agree pockets make the clothes.
It's quite simple. There's a portal to the phantom zone in the pocket. I'm sure there's an untold story somewhere about Superman flying around and Mon El accidentally popping out of the cape pocket and inadvertently punching Superman in the nuts.
I knew it!!! How DID Ma "manipulate" the cloth!!?? Wowwww!!!

Now I'm thinking he should have a pocket like a technological version of Shaman's little bag (Marvels' Alpha Flight character). But that gets me wondering why didn't Krypton put all their people into such a place until they could find a place for them. You know, like what the Doctor's time machine is.
MUCH LOVE Sasha! This is an Interesting topic. I OFTEN bring up the subject about the Mutants, Cyclops, Cable, Jean and a few others that belts, straps and other accessories on their costumes but writers/artists seldom utilize them. I would think someone like Cyclops would have mirrors or crystals in them so he can refract his beams or still others would have explosives or even medical kits in them to help when out in the field. I would LOVE if you could do a segment on this or lack there of.
This hyper-specific deep dive into a thing that ultimately doesn’t matter is the exact reason I subscribed to this channel. Had no clue Superman had a pocket in his cape until now.

I'm all for a cape pocket for snacks. I've kept many foods in an inside coat pocket before, only to surprise my friends when they turn their backs for a second and I'm suddenly snacking. Some of my favorites were a hamburger, a slice of pizza, and (when the pocket ripped a hole into the lining of the coat) 32 cans of soda/pop.
